What an awesome story!!!

Mr. Recruiter P says:

In '77 at the age 19, I had an opportunity to purchase a 1965 Ferrari 330GTC for a mere $7500!!!! It was better known as the 4 headlight ugly duckling. Hence, they commanded a lower price at the time. It belonged to a Dr who was diagnosed with cancer and sadly, given a year to live. He lived in the neighborhood in Hancock Park – Los Angeles and had it parked outside his 4 car garage when I arrived. It was all original, silver with a red leather interior. The only odd thing he did was spray painted the wire Borrani wheels with silver paint! No biggie I thought. I drove it down 6th street shifting her nice and easy but noticed lots of blue smoke coming out of the exhaust. Of course my first thought was it was either the rings or valve guides which at 19, equated to lots of $$$$ to repair. I politely asked him if he didn't mind having it checked out to which he agreed and asked me to call him later that week. He even invited me to Porino's for lunch with his wife, but being a shy, I kindly refused. Well, I called him back the following Friday and he apologized and said he had sold it. Sold it to his mechanic which he hadn't seen in a few years and forgot he gave him first right of refusal….at least that was his story. Oh, a few years later, I was given a coffee table book of the evolution of the Ferrari V12 engines. Turns out, this particular engine design had small holes drilled into the cylinder walls for pre-lubrication upon starting. That's was the blue smoke I saw coming from the exhaust pipes. Ugh!!!!! I still remember the sound of that V12 on a beautiful Saturday morning. I know I was young and naive but the moral of this story is, know whats in front of you and make the purchase.

Man I wish I was interesting enough to have cool car stories lmao. I just grind at work 50 hours a week and keep my two cars just above drivable lol.

I've just finished building a unique motorcycle for formula 3 which took me 10 years. I've got too much invested in it to race it. And I could never sell it. Totally understand.

Awesome story, and a really awesome Ferrari.

Schlipperschlopper Schlipperschlopper says:

According to Babvvo and Tebbvo laws, sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia 🙁
In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute…From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too….as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils…California and New York will do the same from 2027 on…. So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer….They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime!!!

LOUIS LAZARUS says:

If we do a linear timeline of any Ferrari starting from the day it is built all the way until it's no longer in existence, we would see these cars all have one thing in common. The timeline starts out as any car timeline would and then the inevitable happens, instead of driving enjoyment the timeline turns to fix, adjust, tinker, replace, repair, rebuild spend, spend, spend, spend, spend, itemize expenditures, driving enjoyment for another short time and then fix, repair, rebuild, spend, spend, spend, spend, spend, Concours, garage, garage, garage, garage, garage, sell. The driving enjoyment portion of the timeline averages a total of about six minutes for most Ferraris. The complete rest of the timeline is spending money trying to fix something so "unfixable" it's shocking. Knuckleheads seem to love this and God only knows why. It's simple of course. If Enzo Ferrari had been born Enzo Schmuck, the magic would have never been there to trick these low I.Q. people into buying a product so unworthy. Alas, the name "Ferrari" rolls off the tongue, invokes some sort of hypnotic effect and in spite of the fact that they are junk, some people just can't help themselves. Wouldn't it be interesting to know the total amount of time this guy actually spent driving his Ferrari vs. all the time he spent fixing it? Once we get that information, then let's do a "cost per enjoyable driving minute" of the whole experience.

What a great story. It gives hope for the creative people in the world who yearn to do something special with their talents… even if they don't already know how good they are or will become. Bravo.

Great Story. Thank you

Stephen Jablonsky says:

In 1971 I bought a used 330 America from Luigi Chinetti for $4500. Yes, it was gorgeous but I was happy to get rid of it two years later because it was more trouble than it was worth. Now I have a Kia Stinger GT-Line and am delighted to drive it every day. In 1971 I was young and crazy. Now I am 81 and want a car that works every day with no trips to the repair shop.

Ogsonofgroo says:

Thank you for such a laid back and wonderful Ferrari tale, your car is beautiful! Cheers from Canada!

Diego Romo says:

Inspiration. Thank you

Richard Mortimer says:

Love the 330 America. See lots of 250 GTEs, but not so many of those. Not sure what the differences are apart from the 4.0 engine…
