Dear Sir, Well you were right, It was either the celonoid by gas tank or, the canister. I took it to get a good ck up and lo and behold, it was the canister. i almost fell off my chair since i was told the canister would run about $800.00. The mechanic said i could buy a used one but, never know how good it is and we have to pay the labor all over again and, buy the new one. Well, he is repairing it for $700.00 parts and labor and will waive the diag fee. You were soo close to dx it. Thxs again.

It could be the solenoid, but let’s not worry about that until we see if the light goes out or not. It is my pleasure to help!

It is so very nice of people like you to offer your expertise to unknown folks like us. Thank you much. I came in contact with a young men in london who also offers me tips on german shepard dogs and is also very helpfull. God bless all of you kind people.

mike cool says:

Thank you sir. i was told by my nearby mechanic that, there is a celonide under the truck assuming by the gas tank and i wonder if that would be it.Also, will the engine lite reset itself with this po442. The smog fellow said, as soon as the lite goes out, if it ever goes out, he will retest the smog and it should pass. Too bad you are so far away i could pay you to repair my problem it is driving me bananas. A 71 yr old man can’t take too much of this you know.

markjhicks says:

A P0442 can occur for several different reasons. It means you have a leak in the evaporative system. This system removes the fuel fumes from the tank and burns them in the engine. By doing this it keeps them from getting into the atmosphere.

I hate to say but i am not real mechanicly inclined. I can fix several thing but this would be greek to me. By the way, where are you at ??

mike cool says:

you know what or which sensor or what ever it is is the po442 ??

markjhicks says:

By the way, having a code P0442 is not going to leave you stranded on the road. It will not cause your engine to die.

markjhicks says:

Give the cap replacement more than a couple days to reset. It might take a day to two weeks to reset, it all depends upon how you drive. Yes, the canister is expensive especially from the dealership. Check around you might find a better price. The tech might be talking about the vent solenoid. You really won’t know for sure what is causing the code until it is properly tested.

mike cool says:

which way should i go?? the mechanic from the smog place told me about the one mechanic and said he does not so high price work but you know how that goes. In your experience, would the like reset itself and go off after i drive it for awhile ?? several people say yes but i don’t want to screw my truck. they say as long as the lite doesn’t blink, i can drive it for awhile until it goes out or stays on. HELP.

mike cool says:

I put the original tacoma gas cap on it. now the lady at the dealer told me to drive it a couple of days and it would reset it self ?? the guy who does the smog ck told me the same and he assured me the canister is not leaking ?? You know the dealer told me if it is the canister, we’re talking around $800.00 ?? fk man i about fell off my chair. Another mechanic said his commom repairs is the evap celonoid on the bottom by the gas tank.is this possible ?? i’m confused man, i don’t know ??

markjhicks says:

The first and most common issue is the gas cap. Check it first!
Next most common is the VSV Vacuum switching valve and canister.

I have a tacoma 04′ code po442. help

markjhicks says:

Voltage is supposed to go to ground with even a slight amount of vacuum applied. Try testing this switch several times to see if the switch is sticking. Replace the NVLD if the switch is sticking.
It is very common for the NVLD to cause this code on your vehicle.
Hope this helps,

markjhicks says:

3. At the Natural Vacuum Leak Detection (NVLD) assembly, which is located on top of the charcoal canister, which is mounted above the fuel tank, backprobe the Orange wire with a voltmeter. Locate the vacuum line going to the canister and remove the line so a hand vacuum pump can be used to put vacuum on the line going towards the NVLD. The other line at the NVLD goes to the vent. Using a hand vacuum pump, apply vacuum to the line while watching the voltage on the Orange wire.

markjhicks says:

1. Verify that the hoses for the purge solenoid are routed correctly and not pinched or restricted in any way. This includes verifying the lines to make sure there is no liquid fuel or charcoal in the lines. Clean as needed or replace the lines as needed.

2. Verify that the canister purge solenoid will vary duty cycle when commanded to by the scan tool. Replace the solenoid if sticking.

i have a 2003 dodge neon sxt 2.0l with code pp0441 what could i check?

markjhicks says:

The most common cause for a P0455 on your vehicle is an EVAP hose leak. Check all the EVAP hoses very closely. Especially by the canister and vent solenoid.

I have a 2001 dodge durango r/t with code p0455. Help?

markjhicks says:

The most common causes for a P0442 on your vehicle are a leaking fuel filler neck and a canister vent solenoid (valve). With out a smoke machine we really can’t be sure. However, if I were you I would make a real close inspection of the filler neck if it is full of rust thats where I would go. If it looks pretty clean, I would replace the vent solenoid.

Thanks for the video. My 2000 taurus is giving me P0442 too. Replacing the gas cap didn’t help. Where should I look next?

ambercambo says:

thanks, you saved me about 300 bucks

markjhicks says:

The solenoid attaches to a bracket near the radiator on the passenger side of vehicle. The top of the solenoid has TOP printed on it. The solenoid will not operate unless it is installed correctly.

i have a 2003 grand caravan 3.3. i was recently told i needed a new purge valve solenoid. i decided instead of paying 350.00 to get it fixed that i would attempt it myself. i have been told it is fairly easy to replace. any ideas where it is located on my vehicle?

John Doggett says:

Thank you Mark. I’ll give that a shot. Thanks for the quick response!

markjhicks says:

Hello John,
1. Check for 5 volts to the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) on the Pink/Yellow wire and for 8 volts to the Crankshaft Position (CKP) or Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor on the Brown/Pink wire.

2. If no 5 volts or 8 volts , check powers and grounds to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Power supplies are pins 20 and 46. Grounds are pins 10 and 50.

3. If no 5 volts out of the PCM and the power and grounds are good replace the PCM.

I have a 2003 dodge grand caravan es with the 3.8L. It won’t start at all, has power, no noise from the starter to indicate it has failed. It’s giving me multiple codes on the odometer including the 0442, 0455, 0456, 1681, & 2128. Could the evap issue cause it to not start? My neighbor luckily owns a shop and is bringing his computer home to check it out, but is really confused about it so far. Any thoughts? Thanks for your time! John

I have a 2002 .3 Dodge Caravan. Check engine light cam on and I am getting code P0441 Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow. I reset the computer 2x so far and right @ about 100 miles it comes on with the same code each time. I recently had the intake plenum off to rewire the injector harness and am wondering if I screwed something else up in the process. What’s throwing me is the 100 miles before it comes on thing. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
