This is a step by step video showing how I replaced the left rear axle seal on my 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 4X4. The rear axle shown is the very popular Chrysler 9…

Thanks. Good luck! I didn’t emphasize it in the video, but to get that C-clip out easily, push the whole axle medially so it doesn’t pinch the clip.

Nice video!!

spelunkerd says:

Good luck!

Oliver maradiaga says:

thank you I have same job tomorrow

spelunkerd says:

I think it’s similar, but I’ve not done it on this vehicle.

Mick Broomhall says:

Great video man, I need to tear into the back end of my Dakota next weekend, the drivers side seal is leaking badly, whats the process of removing the passenger side axle?

Thanks.

Jared Holland says:

the fluid was good. im not sure what it is. the bearings you said were good in your video, do you know how to get them out?

spelunkerd says:

I’ve not seen that before but the first thing I would check would be the diff fluid level and quality. I can’t see a bad axle seal causing this but low fluid from a bad seal could cause general breakdown. That sound serious, I would check it out right away, with close attention to the spider assembly. By the way, we share the same last name, maybe we are related (grin). Dave

Jared Holland says:

This is the video i needed! Thanks a lot! I’m in the middle of changing both sides on the rear end right now and if it wasn’t for this video I would have done a lot of unneeded removing of parts. I do have a question. I am changing the seals but I’m not 100% sure its my issue. When I turn at low speeds or from a stop the rear end groans violently. Would anyone happen to know what the problem is? The truck is a 2001 Ram 1500 4X4 5.9L

spelunkerd says:

Thanks, Richard.

Richard Pico says:

An excellent vid. Well done.

spelunkerd says:

That’s a good thought. It all looked pretty clean to me and I didn’t see the need.

mtuva2 says:

why not kick it up one more step and spray brake cleaner on all the gears and clean them while the covers off?

spelunkerd says:

For some strange reason, I like the smell of gear oil in the morning (grin). Thanks for your kind remark.

spelunkerd says:

Oh, sorry, I thought this was the front seal discussion video. Maybe try using a large socket or a block of wood. Mine went in pretty easily.

69roadr says:

Thank you for the video, I am going through the same thing. I didnt have that seal insertion tool though, and just ruined my seal trying to get it in 🙁 Now I have to go buy another seal.

spelunkerd says:

I’m glad it helped, thanks for the feedback.

spelunkerd says:

I really like it, but it drinks gasoline like coolaid. Car parts are usually cheap and it’s got lots of room to work on it. Generally reliable.

ddmd80 says:

Nice video, do you still have the truck? How has the reliability been. Looking for a 98-01.

Ricardo Tapia says:

Hey man sorry i couldnt get to you sooner but this video sure was pretty helpful i had no idea what C clips were untill this video iv searched many videos on YouTube because i didnt know how how to get my rear axle shaft out but this was the one that i was looking for although my project vehicle wasnt a dodge Ram but it was 1998 Firebird Trans Am but it turned out well the car runs great i fixed my bearings and Thank You once again spelunkerd.

spelunkerd says:

Thank you, Andrew.

Andrew Molina says:

Awesome

Paul Kuert says:

Just wanted to say thanks again for playing your video. I did take care of my seal and the steps were just about the same. Back on the road. Take care.

spelunkerd says:

Thanks, good luck, Paul.

Paul Kuert says:

Great video. I have an Expedition but this is very similar to what my Haines manual described for a Ford. It’s just better to see it in a video like yours first. Not sure if I have the pin to remove but will re-read before doing this later today. Thanks again.

spelunkerd says:

I’m glad it worked out, thanks for the feedback.

Daniel Valdez says:

spelunkerd says:

Thanks for the feedback.

Lotus Blaze says:

Great video! I especially like the video effects showing the specific parts and additional information. Very well made. I’ve been looking for a tutorial on this topics for months. Thans a ton!

spelunkerd says:

Good luck!

dantmanish says:

Thank you for the video,, easy to understand, I can do this now,, going from 6 lug to 5lug on my dodge dakota, I hope its the same setup as your video, if not ,its got to be somewhat the same ,, I hope anyway,, Thanks again Dan

spelunkerd says:

Thank you for the feedback. As always, it would be worthwhile reading through the comments and researching the topic broadly before diving into this yourself. Please let us know how it worked out.

Ricardo Tapia says:

Thank you just made my job alot easier

MrKingsniper22 says:

Perfect thanks

spelunkerd says:

One C clip for each side. When you expose the C clip and have that short steel shaft removed, then kneel facing where the tire would be and push the hub straight inward. That takes a little tension off the C clip and it will drop out more easily.

MrKingsniper22 says:

I can’t post the link on here. But they describe it the same way you did yours . Also, how many C-clips do you have to remove if you change the seals on both sides? Is it just one C clip for both shafts? Or One for each side? Thank you

MrKingsniper22 says:

Well I found this online on just answer.

spelunkerd says:

Not sure. Does it look the same as mine? You may find some markings on the axle that identify it. If you own the vehicle I would find a manual, preferably a dealers manual that will help with repairs. Online pdf editions on ebay are sometimes a better deal.

MrKingsniper22 says:

I have a 2006 ram 1500. You think it’s kinda the same. Mine is not 4×4 it’s 4×2
