Hi this is Geramicc85 with a new video about the repair of the emergency brake cable on my Dodge Ram 1500. The e-brake must be loosened and the vehicle should be secured from rolling. The cable runs over the rear axle and into the drum of the rear wheel. Here you see how the cable is damaged and the steel cable inside has rusted. I had tried to fix it with tape but that obviously didn’t work, because the steel cable inside just kept rusting away. In this truck the e-brake cable divides into two cables at the rear axle to reach both rear wheels. I just have to replace the shorter part on the driver’s side. I ordered the spare part online. In the video description you will find a product link. In order to remove the old cable, I have to take off the wheel and open the drum brake. Some parts of the brake must be removed. There is a detailed video on my channel for replacing brake cylinders and repairing and reassembling the drum brake. The cable is fixed by a spring onto the handbrake lever which presses on the brake shoes during actuation. I release the spring from the lever with a pair of pliers. It can be easier if you take some tension off the cable by loosening up the tensioner. Now I can remove the cable from the lever and pull the spring off. In order to take the cable from the brake carrier plate, the hooks must be pressed back. Now the cable can be removed from the tensioner on the other end. Here, too, the metal barbed hooks must be pressed in order to be able to remove the cable. Now the old cable is completely removed. I will start again at the rear wheel, to put the new cable in. For this I push the cable through the hole in the brake carrier plate, so that the barbed hooks spread out. Now i slide the spring on and attach the cable to the lever. The spring must also be attached to the lever. Now the drum brake can be completely reassembled with the handbrake lever. If you want to see more details on this check out my drum brake video on my channel. The other end of the cable I push through the hole at the tensioner, and make sure that it’s sitting well. Now the cable can be re-attached to the tensioner. I set the tensioner back to the original setting while making sure that the e-brake is not to hard to push. It is important that the brake shoes are adjusted correctly. In this case, the brake shoes are automatically adjusted. Only after adjustment, can the braking function be checked. The new brake cable is secured with a metal guard, which helps to hold the cable onto the axle. I hope this video also helps with repairs on other vehicles. You will find product links in the description and I enjoy reading your comments and don’t forget to give me a thumbs up. On my channel you’ll find many more useful videos on repairs and modifications to my Dodge Ram. Please don’t forget to subscribe. Until next time, Geramicc85 signing out.

Damn shame how the whole rest of the frame on my 2003 1500 ram is fantastic shape and my parking brake cable is rusted so original owner cut it. Replaced the whole system. New cable and pieces. Works like new. I sprayed the whole thing except for some parts that move, I sprayed it with rustoleum paint so it won’t rust. Well hopefully. Actually, I sprayed it first with the uncoat I bought then painted over it with rustoleum gloss black paint. Should stay good for life.

I just bought a 92 f150 custom, tested out the e break and the line snapped, i dont know what the breaks look like, chances are they are drum breaks. I guess im in for one hell of a time of not knowing what the hell im doing. Its not even registered yet, still paying the truck off. Also my first vehicle. Well… come to think of it i know a guy i might be safe from losing parts and tearing it apart myself.

My park break spring is broken can't find new one

Gerald Knoch says:

Looks like you can just cut the old cable off with cut off wheel or dremel and save time.

swapped rear axle from 98 ram 1500 onto my 2000 ram 1500 quad cab. Parking brake on drivers side is setup just as in video passing over the axle and entering the brake housing from the rear. ( old axle from my 2000 ram entered from the front of the brake housing). My stock drivers side cable is to short and even the 98 version I got from the auto parts store is about a foot short! Cannot tell from the video what the exact part number was from rock auto.. Cannot seem to find one that is long enough. They all are 46-47 inches. Is there a different part number for the quad cab?

I hope the crown victoria are that simple,, thanks.

To replace the first half closest to the E Brake  pedal do you have to mess with pulling the rear brake drum etc……. I'm pretty sure my back broke in the first half.  Looks like I can buy just that half

Would the be the same process for a 2012 Ram 2500 4×4?
