one more question when I try to remove those 4 bolts. the pulley keeps
spinning, is there anyway i can secure the pulley so that they wont turn
while im trying to turn the bolts? thx

msefatt says:

@1aauto, Sorry i explained it wrong, the bolts are spinning and i can’t
reach the bolts head so when i spin the nut it spins the bolt also,i have
tried my hardest to hold the bolt and undo the nut, it didnt work

1A Auto Parts says:

@rudiherold84 It could mean the clutch is frozen up and needs to be
replaced. If you push the fan hard enough to finally move and the pulley is
slipping on the belt then yes your clutch is probably seized and needs to
be replaced.

dnlbraden says:

Big help, gonna have to change mine, and never done it before. Thanks, very
helpful, and little more simple than I thought it was gonna involve.

jaxon258 says:

Would I be better using a Napa fan clutch or the auto zone torqflo fan
clutch?

msefatt says:

hey mate im tryin to do this fan change, although when i was removing the
nuts on the bolts the whole lot spun and i can’t get to the head of the
bolts on the back due to the water pump, i am unable to get the rattle gun
on it to spin through it off. i have also tried the usual pliers and nut
and other techniques, but dont want to ruin the thread and i dont wan’t to
cut out the bolts incase i cant remove them. have you got any ideas on how
to get the nuts off. thanks for your time

THANKS for the video, i wasn’t sure how t remove my fan clutch! electric
fans here i come!

1A Auto Parts says:

We currently do not have an auto repair video that shows you how to replace
the water pump on that vehicle. If there’s a crack in the pulley you may
want to replace it, for one that’s not damaged.

We carry fan clutches for your radiator fan on our website 1aauto.com for

1A Auto Parts says:

The fan is reverse thread so you will have to go in the opposite direction
as you would normally do. You might have to use a hammer to shock the nut
to loosen it from the water pump shaft.

surrynet says:

There 2 points you failed to mention, #1-if there is alot of dirt and looks
like grease around the temp spring, it probably is starting to leak. #2-
Not all water pumps have studs sticking out and usenuts to hold the fan on,
some use bolts. On the ones using bolts I have found it easier after
loosening the bolts remove the belt because if the pulley get out of
alignment from the holes in the waterpump shaft it is harder to see the
holes for the bolts when installing, belt off makes easier

jhowe67 says:

on a lot of fords, the bolts will need to turn right to remove as they are
traditional bolts.

1A Auto Parts says:

@msefatt You may have to turn the fan, so that the bolts rotate to the top
where you can get at them again.

Rudi Herold says:

If the fan is too tight to turn, does that mean replacement on the fan
clutch?

sundogforlove says:

I’m changing the water pump on my 1991 gmc van. It is hard to get to.
Should I install a new fan clutch at the same time? Also, the thermostat
housing has a brace for the tensioner on it. How stupid is that? You have
to take everything apart just to replace the thermostat. Absolutely
frustrating. Not the America that our fathers created. I forgot to mention
that the pulley on the power steering unit has a crack in it. Should I
change it?

DeFreshS10 says:

How do i go about removing the fan on a 1998 Chevy S10? it only has one big
nut holding the fan on and everything i try to do only spins the water pump
and the fan, i cant get that nut loosened to get the fan assembly off. any
advise?

1A Auto Parts says:

@msefatt You would have to find a way to sneak a wrench or something in
there to hole the nut from spinning so that you could loosen the bolt.

MUSICSEARCH1200 says:

I don’t known english language, but even i understand this. Thank you very
much, i have a durango 2006 and the fan clutch is like this engine, then i
go to buy the exact part. God bless you for your help to all worldwide,
gracias amigo, saludos desde Chile (southamerica) 😀

@surrynet Thanks for the additional tips!

1A Auto Parts says:

@surrynet thanks for sharing your tips

surrynet says:

Another tip I Learned years ago, when installing nuts on studs that hold
fan on and not much room to spin the nuts on do this : take a flat shoe
lace, tape it to one of the flat sides of the nut using small piece of
tape. If the nut turns on clockwise, wrap the shoe lace around the nut
clockwise like you would with a yo-yo. Hold nut against the stud with one
finger and with the other hand gently pull the shoe lace like starting a
weedeater, the nut will spin itself on, works every time.
