The top bolt is tough. I bought a crescent shaped box wrench, didn’t work.
Finally, I got the right socket wrench extension with wobbles and got it
with a ratchet wrench with extra leverage (steel pipe). I even snapped a
socket swivel trying this. A socket extension with a wobble is sufficient
and didnt’ break.

does anyone know what size bolts are on the starter for 96 dodge dakota
3.9, for some reason am missing the top right side bolt how it came out
have no idea. Dave

The top bolt on mine is impossible to get too. I’m really at a loss. A
socket won’t fit, a wrench won’t fit… I dunno… Afraid I’ll have to take
it to a shop

So take the three screws out of the solenoid and repair the contacts and
plunger, it’s easy as can be, the contacts can be purchased, if yer clever
you can make the old one’s work again by moving the shiney washer inside
and trimming some contact off since they will be moved “in ‘ some.

@Lonewolf161616 If I remember right I used a long extension and went over
the top of the starter from the front. When I say long I think I might have
used my 2 footish extension. I may have also had a swivel on the end. Good
luck.

Its easier to disconnect both battery cables at the battery, and pull the
starter down once unbolted with the wires still attached. That trans line
clip on the upper mounting bolt broke off when replacing my starter. In my
opinion it is useless anyways. That upper bolt is a pain to thread in since
you cannot see it.

I have an 89 Dakota 3.9L V6, When its cold out I have to turn the Key 5
times before the starter will turn, The 1,2,3,4 times I turn the Key sounds
exactly like the one in the Video…
