Gary, awesome video! Clear instructions, good lighting and quality. Q: Had
a new Valair put in last year. Before and after I’ve always heard loud
chatter when idling and clutch engaged(pedal released) or shifting into 5th
or 6th and engaging clutch(releasing pedal) noise stops when i step on the
clutch pedal. From all I’ve read, could this be the input shaft or the
bearing? I noticed you mentioned alignment issues causing input shaft
failure… hmmm? I should just call you. :(

freddythestandard says:

If i’m ordering a clutch for my truck, 177k miles, should i go ahead and
get a flywheel with it or do i need to pull it apart first?

Todd Shaw says:

AWESOME VIDEO! Extremely helpful. I will purchase anything I can from you
guys:)

V10PDTDI says:

What about the rear main seal and the transmission input shaft seal ? I
like the home made tool for retaining the flywheel good ideal A+

perfectionclutch says:

Removing the corrosion, carefull cleaning and a little bit of spline lube
is frequently overlooked during the R&R. It makes a big difference, allows
the disc to float during shifts on the shaft, and just as you described,
makes shifting easier. Glad you found the rust and took care of it. Gary

perfectionclutch says:

@V10PDTDI Very good observation about the seals. Our primary focus being
clutch suppliers is the correct installation process and any source of
contamination should be inspected and corrected as necessary. The bolt pins
allow this flywheel and clutch installation to safely and easily be done by
one person. Thank you, Gary

Jishory says:

Thank you for putting this video together, should make my life much easier
tackling my clutch this weekend!

thomasmartin1992 says:

Would WD-40 be a good preservative to put on the fly wheel?

G Man says:

Excellent vid!! I love this kind of stuff (even though my ’97 12-valve
Cummins has a 47RE behind it)!! Great technical informations and
presentation!! Thanks for sharing sir!

perfectionclutch says:

@foxdmulder Thanks! Be sure to check out our other videos on our You Tube
channel called perfectionclutch.

I also have a 2004 3500 with the 5.9 Cummins and 6 speed tranny. I want to
order my parts prior ro tackling such a job. How can I determine if my
clutch is a 12 1/4″ or 13″ clutch? Also, is there a preferred brand that
you use at your shop? Thanks and great video.

hankeybillfred says:

You CAN, but while you’re going through the hassels of being down there,
you might as well replace everything.

Ken H says:

likes your work everything clean.

Very well done video thank you!

freddythestandard says:

ok thanks, this is my first manual truck that i’ve owned, driven them
before, looking at south bend dual disk clutch, im not sure but i think
they sell all of them in one package, thanks for your informative videos

spelunkerd, Thank you. Gary

studeystudebaker50 says:

I just put in a new pressure plate, clutch plate, the clutch is very
grabby,I also have to run the slave cylinder very tight ,no slack in the
throw out bearing, this is the first time ever in a clutch exchange that I
am running the t.o. bearing against the fengers,is this something new to
let the t,o. bearing run continuose-no slack at all, clutch is very gabby,I
did not replace the t.o. bearing,I was thing it would only run when
needed, best video -I;ve watched thank you

perfectionclutch says:

@h23sirlude Thanks!

Mister Nightbane says:

very good diy but one important thing you missed. IF your reusing the old
fly wheel make sure to CUT the fly wheel down before installing a new clutch

shane cochran says:

By far the best in depth step by step video of an NV5600 clutch job out
there, I especially liked the failure analysis of the components at the
end. GREAT JOB!

perfectionclutch says:

Thanks for the comments, it’s all about the details. Gary

perfectionclutch says:

@Xx69roadrunnerxX Thanks!

perfectionclutch says:

Shane, Thanks for the kind words. I own an ’05 with the same trans so this
one is pretty important to me. Too many times its just an R&R w/o an
autopsy. Need to find out why to prevent problems. Don’t have enough space
here but on Tech Calls my record no. of R&R’s by one shop on this same
powertrain to get it to release/shift was FOURTEEN R&R’s with lets try this
and see if it works. Pretty sad. My ’97 12V NV4500 video was pretty deep
too, thats my Son’s truck. Gary

perfectionclutch says:

Cumminstothewheels, I have used this technique many times and I cannot
report any negatives, no damage on any installation. In the VW Beetle video
I showed another homemade shop trick using an old flexplate I cut a section
and attached to cylinder block w/bolt. It really was slick, similar to
several F/W lock tools. Thanks for the interesting observation. Gary

perfectionclutch says:

Freeplay on passenger cars and pickups was phased out with the development
of improved bearings, diaphragm spring clutches and hydraulic release
systems. Old school lever types still want freeplay. Release bearing used
to be thrust bearings, very strong high load in thrust, but they found that
an angular contact self aligning bearing could withstand constant contact,
no freeplay req’d. The systems evolved. Biggest thing, DO NOT rest your
foot on the clutch pedal while driving, big NO NO.

Cumminstothewheels says:

and does the channel strut ruin the flywheel at all when youre torquing on
the bolts?

jokester1621 says:

When reinstalling the new clutch can you reuse old hardware?

studeystudebaker50 says:

the engine is a 4bt cummins m435 tranny-I know now I had better remove it
and put in a new t,o. bearing-so its ok now to run the throw out bearing
all the time —thanks again best video yet

perfectionclutch says:

Sorry, I didn’t see this sooner. Hope you called our Tech Line. Your ’04 is
13″ just like what you see in the video. We are a clutch company, not a
shop. Our clutch line is called Perfection and is available throughout the
USA. Please feel free to call 800-258-8312 Ext. 4 for further details. Gary
