WARNING: Before you buy a Dodge Intrepid 2.7L………

1998-2004 Dodge Intrepids & Chrysler Concordes are very tedious and sensitive to on-time maintenance. There is endless proof on Intrepid forums that these ca…

Another tip would be to run water instead of antifreeze. I had a ’99 old
style GM pickup, a 1500, with a 305/5.0L V8 Vortec in it. As alot of GM
owners know, the plastic intake gaskets fail allowing coolant into the
lifter valley and so oil pan, causing premature wear and failure. Intake
gasket was toast for awhile, but I never knew, must have drive it daily for
about 2 or 3 weeks before I finally checked the oil.. I always run water in
the spring/summer/fall months when it’s above 40 or so, since water doesn’t
fry bearings as quick as concentrated antifreeze. Plus, water’s cheaper. I
ran the truck for over 6 months before it spun #2 bearing, it spun just at
the end of february.

spelunkerd says:

Is there no weep hole to allow coolant to drain out? That clearly sounds
like a design flaw of the worst kind. Yeah, with engineers like this, it’s
a major hit in resale value.

Enlil Kasalf says:

never have engine issues with my 2.7 intrepid even at 245000 miles and it
might be cause i used synthetic oil in it but with transmission which was
replaced at 180000 miles and water pump so frequently that i almost get rid
of this car long time ago but at this time i am not putting any penny on it
NO MORE so like it was said in the video is a very nice car BUT EXPENSIVE
TO MAINTAIN

mikemorr100 says:

Bought this as my first car. DO NOT BUY THIS AS YOUR FIRST CAR!! Ironically
the water pump is the only part of my cooling system that hasn’t failed. I
bought it at 146,000 miles, owner said the water pump was brand new. I’ve
have the radiator spring 5 leaks all at once. After that the thermostat
went, after that the heater core went which I’m not fixing because I can’t
stand to fix this thing anymore. I had to replace a transmission solenoid,
both o2 sensors, and the oil pressure sensor twice. I’ve put 11,000 miles
on it and spent about $2,500 on repairs and I can’t afford another car yet
and nobody will buy mine. I love this car however, which may sound weird. I
like how smoothly it runs and I’ve never had another car so I don’t have a
comparison. With proper maintenance this car is great.

Eric Netter says:

the best way to avoid an intrepid from breaking down is to get the 3.5

Jenni G says:

Thank you very much that’s very helpful my car runs great at the moment but
if I ever needed it I wouldn’t know where its at..

Its a 3.5 liter hi output…
I bought the car really pretty have a nice sunroof you know.. wasn’t really
thinking how hard it was to build the motor.. or how was going to get it
fixed if needed to be… lol .. .. I bought it because they remind me a lot
of my Grand Am GT.. lol … but again thank you very much for telling me
where the battery was..

Jason Anderson says:

the water pump is driven by the timing chain that is a Design flaw. Why
anyone would think putting something that sensitive to water near the
source of water flow is beyond me.

Daniel mouton says:

im having that problem right now with my intrepid getting the water pump
changed tomorrow hope that fixes my problem. left my car home for 4 months
when i left for college when i started it up and moved it out the yard the
motor started smoking ans i had sludge in my oil pan

Choirboyjr11 says:

More like that water eats away at the bearings.

Loren Berry says:

I bought a Sebring with the 2.7 in it, the car was nice but the engine is
crap. I did not know that engineers could get their head that far up there
ass. While it is true that the water pump should be replaced ever 70000
miles. Seems reasonable no one told me that it would cost $900 at the shop
and require the valve covers be removed as well?? WTF were they thinking?
Oh well, my bad should have done my home work! I got rid of the car after 3
months and bought another 3.8 Grand Prix my 4th one.

chickenofsea says:

Those things are a fucking abortion.

jeff hamilton says:

You start out by saying that this engine is not a piece of crap then list
all the reasons it is a piece of crap. THIS ENGINE IS A PIECE OF CRAP!!!!

CarFan1999 says:

Are there any problems with the Chrysler PT Cruiser’s 2.4 I-4 and what must
be done to keep them in good running condition?

eots44 says:

The problem might not be the engine, but I think it is outrageous to expect
the people who these cars was marketed to new to take Mercedes Benz and BMW
like care of these cars. These were full size family sedans, and competed
with the Ford Taurus and Chevy Impala. Both Taurus and Impala last just as
long and require the proper amount of maintence for the class.

Kadrian Williams says:

This is the worst motor in history and im the owner of one well 2 as in 2
motors 1 car on slung tge crank shaft and the other has been running hot
off and on for several months every mechanic has another answer to fix the
problem from thermostat to a complete rebuild so yes these motors are crap

Brummeman says:

Mechanics call these engines “Grenade” engines because if anything fails,
the engine is not rebuildable and it is only worth it’s weight in scrap!!!
I did heads on one of these…It was hell….never again…I tell
customers to bring it to Dodge.

Jenni G says:

Okay so I have a 2004 Dodge Intrepid but cant find where my battery is

elzorro43 says:

I will not touch a Chrysler product period!

Jack Black says:

thrown off a bit.. it says serviced at 81ooo miles on your windshield but
ur odometer reads 80ooo miles ummm what’s with that

5c0H says:

the 2.7 is in more than the intrepid. this engine is the reason why people
hate intrepids. my 3.3 indestructible

Dan Blim says:

I agree with you, I have the same engine..runs excellent..only problem I
have is the damn manual tensioner loosening back up. also runs dirty..I
dump seafoam in the oil about 100 miles before the oil change and it seems
to clean it up..good video btw

Kyle Mara says:

Another thing to note with water pumps is that it’s consumer ignorance that
actually causes a toasted engine once the bearings go out on it. I had a
water pump go out on my ’98 intrepid about a year ago when my radiator
cracked open during the summer, temperature gauge shot up, . Overheating
light came on, I parked the car and shut it off. It was obvious the weep
hole had been leaking (the radiator was cracked open, but was less obvious
where it was cracked). A new radiator, water pump, chain tensioner, new
hoses, and new cap ran me for about $300. Inspected the chain heavily but
it was in near mint condition. The point is anyone who knows nothing about
cars besides to start it will reduce it to trash in no time. Is it a crappy
design? Yes. But I’m sure 80-90% ranting about engine failures of the 2.7
on that site can’t even say what the camshaft does, let alone anything
remotely useful mechanically about the car. 193k miles, no burning oil, 3rd
water pump, only a slight oil leak from the drain pan I ignore, and a
sticky lifter depending on the oil pressure and the cars attitude.

Russell Comer says:

WORST ENGINE EVER !!! DO NOT BUY, AND SHOULD BE ILLEGAL TO RESELL. !!!!
■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■
STAY AWAY FROM THESE CARS. EVEN CHEAP IS TOO EXPENSIVE WITH THIS CAR.
EVEN THE 2002 RT 3.0 IS PRONE TO FAIL.
BUY ANYTHING ELSE, STAY AWAY PLEASE. STAY AWAY !!!!!!!

cesmjc says:

I have a 03 Concorde with 124000 miles. It has the 2.7L. Pretty sure that
the thermostat needs replace. Everyone I talk to says it’s a nightmare to
replace. I have been trying to find out how make this repair.

Keller Josef says:

i have steady temp gage , before and after inserting thermostat 160
degrees Fahrenheir.I have an usual hot engine when i approach my face to
this engine compared to other engines that have reached ops temp .
Sometimes oil pressure flickering when below 900 rpm sometimes 1100 rpm.
Oil level shows good, oil pump has good performanc3e. I may have air
pockets somewhere ?

Andrew Reginato says:

There are other engines with water pump setup similarly – the entire
current Ford V6 range (Ford Taurus, Edge, Flex, Mustang, F-150, etc., both
Eco boost and non-eco boost V6’s) is setup with the water pump internal to
the engine – so a coolant leak does pose a risk of leaking into the oil and
causing failure. The old GM Quad 4 (or “Twin CAM” in the late 90’s/early
2000’s) is also setup in the same way – that’s one reason (of many reasons)
why so many Quads/Twin CAM’s would grenade.

LibertyFreedom1787 says:

No need to include the model or motor size. Could have just titled it
“Warning:Before buying any Dodge”.

patrick power says:

i have over 330 k on mine 2000 2.7

Jim Policke says:

No, it’s not a “great engine”. It’s probably the most horrific turd in
automotive history. The tool that designed this abortion should be picking
up dogshit in a park. All engines are great when they run. But to make a
vulnerable part like the water pump internal? Instead of a one hour job you
have to dismantle the front of the car and the engine? God, what a mother
of a repair bill this must be. Massive, flaming FAIL.

Rey Robles says:

I have a 2005 dodge stratus, 2.7L..it has 172k…its running good right
now, only problem I have is it smokes and throws out oil when running.

Curtis Williams says:

I have a 2002 Intrepid SE 2.7. It runs like brand new and has 152000 miles
on it.. The oil gets changed every 3 months. The only problems I’ve had
from it was the thermostat housing blew out once and I had to replace the
thermostat housing, thermostat, and oil pressure sender. I love my Intrepid
though.

felixmeow1 says:

google it theres a video about it ..my granddaughter was looking a station
wagon that could handle 6 people.I researched the wagon. she did not buy
one. based on what your trying to defend. you said (TOO MUCH engineering
and OVER-engineered) heres your grammar lesson.over engineered doesn’t
equal dependability. face it your stuck with a not so wonderful car and
your doing the right thing to keep it alive we thank you for the info on
that but to defend as you call it over engineered come on

FPGT24 says:

Any 1998-2004 Chrysler 2.7 v6. your Sebring has the same identical motor as
the Intrepid, its just mounted transversely unlike in the Intrepid. In
2005, the 2.7 was redesigned (for the LX cars and the Avenger/Sebring),
they haven’t really had any problems with them since the redesign.

jukeboxhero844 says:

its still shit because its one more thing youve gotta change. fuck dsm.

Riccardo Bartolomeo says:

Why didn’t Chrysler correct the problem by recalling the cars? I just don’t
trust them.I’m a GM guy anyway.I love my 3800.

landongendur says:

My ’99 Intrepid must’ve been one of the rare well-built cars at the factory
that day. It was bought by my dad with 78K, later given to his spouse, then
given to me, then given to my sister, and now back to me. It’s now got 282K
on it and we have literally done nothing to it other than new tires,
battery, and oil changes.

FPGT24 says:

the 2.7 is very easy to work on EXCEPT for the water pump. the 3.2/3.5 is
extremely difficult to work on, there is NO room in the engine bay at all,
and the intake manifold is ginormous it covers the entire engine. When i
opened the hood on a 3.2 Intrepid i had at my car lot last month, it made
me want to go buy a carton of cigarettes (and ive never smoked in my
life!!). ended up junking that Intrepid, trans was bad. was a real nice car
though. Intrepids only last in hands of mechanics.

FPGT24 says:

so you one of those people that go out to inspect cars that have been in
accidents?

Ivars Japins says:

Зачетно капот деревяшкой подставлен! =)))) Наши ребята!

FPGT24 says:

No. The 2.7 was redesigned in 2005 for the LX line of cars. Its the same
motor underneath but they made a ton of changes to it.

FPGT24 says:

The engine was over-engineered. For an engine that was designed during the
mid 1990’s, it was considered extremely high-tech and it was very advanced
for it’s time. The oil sludge issue can be completely prevented by using
synthetic oil. I agree that there are a couple design flaws with the engine
such as the absolute necessary need to use synthetic oil or risk your
engine blowing, and the water pump location, but if an Intrepid has a
caring owner, they will likely never have a problem with it.

stevenabeaudry says:

Water pump is very labor intensive on this car…

vunley says:

You must be new to cars, Seth.

FPGT24 says:

Daimler-Benz/DaimlerChrysler/Mercedes was a corrupt scam artist company at
the time that milked the hell out of Chrysler, they didnt care about
anything except cutting corners. Thats why the cars were not recalled. If
it had been the REAL Chrysler, whom designed both gens of the Intrepid, I
think they probably would have recalled them. But Daimler took over in 98,
the year these 2nd gen Treps were released.

Danny Whitfield says:

DON’T DON’T DON’T BUY ONE OF THESE LAND BOMBS!!! Sensitive engines? Owners
not keep up maintenance?? CRAP!! These engines where blowing up at the test
factories even before they were installed. I know because my uncle worked
for Chrysler engineering. These engines were rush into production before
all issues where address. The worst part?? they kept them in production
until 2000.

FPGT24 says:

You obviously don’t know much about cars, otherwise u’d know that since
FIAT has taken over Chrysler their cars have become competitive with even
japanese brands and have reliability thats excelling over ford and GM.

Tommy Radek says:

the Intrepid 2.7 engine has to be one of the worst engineered engines in
automotive history !!!!!
