Have the same engine in my 2014 Dodge Journey.
Same error code popped about 2 weeks ago. No sweat. I'll get around to it.
Yesterday I noticed that the shifting was erratic when I first started driving. Thought "GREAT! Transmission is going!".
You and this video just saved me a ton of worry and a big chunk of change for a diagnosis.

The stat opens by means of the bulb on the end of the seal disc. The rod sticking into the outlet protrudes farther as the bulb gets warmer thus making the seal disc move away from the housing, opening a gap between the disc and housing. The spring is there to make sure that the stat closes securly when cooled down so there is no leakage and you get what you have here, an engine running below optimum operating temp.
