How to Replace Dodge and Chrysler 3.5L Water Pump and Timing Belt Step by Step

In this video I will show you how I replaced my timing belt and water pump on a 3.5L V6 Dodge Charger. A couple years ago I contacted a Chrysler dealer to get an estimate on doing this job and it was $1000. I didn’t pay more than $200 for the water pump, timing belt and anti-freeze

Hey! I really dig the video since I’m doing water pump/timing belt on my 2010 challenger, also what’s your opinion on p0340 ? Camshaft position sensor. It was replaced but the car still doesn’t start. Could it be my belt snapped or the cogs moved out of tdc?

@i-ammoney8397 says:

I replaced the timing belt on my 2005 dodge magnum. I aligned the markings really good and belt was very tight everywhere. I started the car and sound good but then stated to have very rough idle.

I put everything apart again with the crankshaft at TDC the markings on my camshaft where extremely off, like facing down to 6pm.

Now I don't know if I realign the camshaft markings is going to do that again.

Any tips on this????

When you started the car up after replacing the water pump what was that tapping noise? My charger has devolved a noise, trying to diagnose it.

@user-qx1wl2um2k says:

You don't have to push the tensioner in and insert a pin and then pull the pin out after installation? Or did you put a new tensioner and it already had a pin and you had to pull it out?

@jeffreyrivera9459 says:

Did you just say the original belt had 200k miles on it?! Lol my ‘10 has 55k so I might wait til tax returns to do the job

@unced1186 says:

only get three positions when trying to line up the passenger side cam sprocket to the timing reference point never stops on the timing reference

@unced1186 says:

m my passenger side cam is flipping passed the timing mark will ot line up even with the belt off valve seems like it is loading up why

@jeffreyrivera9459 says:

2010Challenge SE too right?

@k9cj5 says:

While you're doing this job is it a good idea to replace the harmonic balancer or anything else like the serpentine belt or tensioner? Thanks again.

@jasoneck7086 says:

Hey brother, do I HAVE to change the water pump with the timing belt? Most of what I'm seeing is both being replaced.

@vectorhehe7905 says:

Hey bud, I had the water pump, timing belt and tensioner changed on my 300 by a mechanic. After the repair, it makes more noise and vibrates more than before. The vibration is most severe when accelerating in 3rd gear (50-70KPH, RPM 1500-2000). I took the car back to the mechanic shop, they said it’s the transmission problem and wanted me to change the entire transmission. Could timing belt replacement cause such noise and vibrations? Looking forward for your reply. Many thanks

Thank you so much for all this hard work. I feel confident tackling this on with your video on my workbench.
