It will not harm the piston. Typically what to do is, place the old brake pad on the rotor and compress the piston in to the caliper that way, so that the force of the clamp in on the old brake pad. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

NoShadowOfDoubt1 says:

I have one last question on this, thanks for your informational video, when you push or pry the rotor back through the caliper’s window forcing the piston back in, would that damage the piston?

1aauto says:

Once you button eveything up and pump the brakes, they should come off of the rotors a little bit. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

NoShadowOfDoubt1 says:

Are the brake pads supposed to be touching the rotor? or in contact with it? see time 1:48

crysis860 says:

purchase. resurfacing cost hundreds at the dealer. new can cost around 40

Thanks for visiting us on YouTube! Have a great day.

Jesse Locke says:

Thanks. It’s really good to have someone that cares about giving good advice while not charging per response, per line or per number of characters in the response. I know you’re not charging anything for this type of advice I’m just being a little sarcastic. Your help is very much appreciated.

1aauto says:

Normally you will be fine with the stock pads and shocks as long as you do not exceed the GVW on the driver side door of the vehicle.

Jesse Locke says:

I want to use my 2003 Dodge Caravan for small weight deliveries but there will be lots of packages, as many as 100+. Would you recommend a certain type of brake pad and or shocks?

1aauto says:

We carry some very cost effective brake pad and rotor kits on our website with FREE SHIPPING in the lower 48 states. When you turn a rotor you’re taking even more material off of it than it came with. Rotors have come down in price over the past 15 years. It’s kind of worth just replacing them with a new set. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

what is cheaper resurface rotors or purchase new ones?

just a tip i find. when compressing the caliper rule of thumb is to always use the old pad left on it to press against with the C clamp. it ensures even pressure, and will never cock or ceaze the caliper from uneven pressure from pressing directly on the edge of the piston itself. also avoids any skuffs that may occur. just a tip i found always helpfull. hope you find it the same.

1aauto says:

You may have to bring the vehicle in to someone to have them do a power bleed on the system as well as reset anything that needs to be done.

William Jenkins says:

I have an issue where my front driver side, rear passenger side is not supplying any pressure to their brakes, the driver rear and passenger side front are whats currently stopping my 2003 caravan. I’ve been told this is an ABS electronic issue that needs reset, as I’ve tried bleeding/draining and refilling with new fluid with no positive results.

1aauto says:

Sometimes what happens with aftermarket brakes is they make some noise during braking. This is not unusual and might go away over time.

Wilber Rodriguez says:

1A Auto .. Hi I have a problem with my Dodge caravan 06, recently changed the front brakes, but the problem is that when braking, only makes a noise when the brake, i put everything in place, but the noise continues, I will give advice appreciate it.

Nicely done video. Thanks for taking the time and effort to do it. The only thing I would add is as another viewer noted: The use of anti-seize on the caliber bolts is a positive step. Thanks!

shotgunn111 says:

about to change out brakes and rotors today! this video will help alot! i have used your site in the past for my 2004 cavlier and my 93 nissan maxima! your videos are lifesavers! thanks a bunch!

Thank you sooo much we are new to the world of car repair and we had both brakes replaced on our ’05 T and C in about an hour works like a charm but we had metric bolts on ours just people know they might be different but same repair structure 🙂 ty ty ty 🙂

Brian Wall says:

The 5/16 hex wrench does NOT work on the 2006 Town and Country Touring edition. It’s too big. It needs a 7mm hex wrench. Otherwise this is an excellent video! I’ve replaced brake pads and rotors before, but so seldom that I always forget the steps. Your video was exactly what I needed. Thanks!

Worked like a charm, took 4 hours to do this and rotate the tires in 90+ degree weather (with plenty of rests in between).

This video was VERY helpful, I’d recommend it to anyone! Thank you so much!!!!!

1aauto says:

That bracket needs to come off when you’re also changing the rotor. Hope this helps you out. Have a great day! 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

You just saved me a lot of cash and time sir. Total time on the job was 1hr. Not bad for my first time. You are a credit to your profession . Many thanks

romansten9 says:

whats the reason for removing the bracket that the caliper attaches to? seems like an extra step, since the pads and disc can be replaced without it.

Also, it would have been nice to say what to do if something goes wrong! such as if the caliper doesn’t compress. the video is fine if everything goes well, but some people might get “stuck” otherwise (not a perfect world!) otherwise, well done.

1aauto says:

You should be able to apply some of the basic steps to your Caravan that are shown in this video. You may need different sized tools, but the video will show you in which order to take things apart in. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Doug Zbikowski says:

My 2008 Town and Country is the newer body style. Not sure if this video still applies.

1aauto says:

The town and country share the same components as the caravan so you will have the same set up as seen in the video.

Stark324 says:

Any major differences between this and the 1997 models for the Chrysler town and country? I haven’t taken a look at mine yet, but is it pretty similar? You guys are great by the way, just all around put-together company.

1aauto says:

You can add a little anti-seize to the threads of the bolts that hold the calipers on. You do not want to put grease on the back of the brake pads, because it could end up on the rotors and make them slippery. If you trying to get the pads not to squeak, you can buy some anti-squeek lubricant for the back of the brake pads. it’s made to be applied to the back of the brake pads. Hope this helps you out.

notmycupotea says:

don’t the back of the pads need grease and the bolts where the calipers slide on also?

1aauto says:

No problem at all. Have a great day.
