Either you have look at the crank and cam sensor signal relationship with a labscope or you have to eyeball it.

Thanks Markjhicks for your prompt reply. Is there an indirect way to know that my timing belt is good without opening timing belt cover etc. Thanks for your reply again.

markjhicks says:

Hello Garry, sorry i never received your message. Any one of my guys can help you with questions in the future. They are all hand picked by me, master techs and really good guys.
To set a P0340 code the computer is looking at the relationship between the cam and crank sensor signals. It is usually a cam sensor that sets it off, but yes it can also be a jumped or stretched timing belt to cause the code. The only way to be sure is to scope it.
Hope this helps,

Hi Mark,I am Garry and just called you regarding p0340 cam sensor code in my chrysler neon 2001 2.0 litre. but i was told that you were busy so i left the voice message. My question is does this code some how related to timing belt?Well,my car got hot in feb 2013,I changed radiator, used water instead of coolant in summers.and later water pump leaked that I wanted to change but one day my car went off when i accelerated it on the highway.checked the code say-P0340.is this related to timing belt?

markjhicks says:

Thank you for the kind words, they do mean a lot to us!

Nice demo..Thanks for the info!

It is by the starter motor.

Yes if it is the same number it is in the same place.

ray camacho says:

mr mark one more thing do you know on a2005 dodge caravan 4 cyl. 4.2 where the knock senor is located?

ray camacho says:

hey mr. mark I have a 2005 dodge caravan 4cyl. 4.2 and the camshaft position sensor has to be change to mt amaze it has the same part number for both would it be in the same place as the neon?

markjhicks says:

I will assume you have a vehicle similar to the one in the video. It is a good idea to disconnect the battery before installing any sensor. Would not cause it not to start? Probably not. I would be more suspicious of a poor connection. These connectors do have a fairly high failure rate. Look the connection and the wires leading to it very carefully. If all looks good there get another sensor and let me know what happens. You can call me during the day at 1-800-558-9770

markjhicks says:

You have to follow the steps just like I wrote them. When you disconnect the ASD you have to jumper pins 30 to 87. Look on the bottom of the relay it should tell you the pin numbers.
To check the injector pulse you will need a noid light. Plug the light into the connector and crank the engine, the light will flash if you have a pulse.
AutoZone has noid lights in their loaner tool program.

TexasBarBQ says:

disconnected the ASD and PCM connectors, do I try to start the car with them disconnected? and also I dont know how to tell if Im getting an injecter pulse or not.

markjhicks says:

No you do not need to disconnect the battery.

Mark Hicks

markjhicks says:

Perfect! Let me know how it turns out Dennis.

Mark Hicks

TexasBarBQ says:

should the battery be disconnected to do this and once I disconnect the ASD and PCMs do I replace them right away and try to start?

Frank Gutters says:

Thank Mark.
I will performance that test on my automatic 2001 Chrysler gran voyager.

Dennis

markjhicks says:

5. Connect a 12 V test light to B+. With the probe end of the test light, momentarily tap the Black/Gray wire at pin 4 (98 and later) or pin 11 (95-97 models) of the PCM. This action should cause the coil to fire. The spark should jump at least a one inch gap.

6. If there is no spark out of the coil tower during this step, the distributor has failed and needs to be replaced.

7. If there is strong spark from the coil tower, check all powers and grounds at the PCM.

Wells VE

markjhicks says:

2. Remove the distributor cap and connect a grounded jumper wire near the coil tower. This is to check for spark jumping from the coil. The coil should snap a spark across at minimum a one inch gap.

3. Jumper pin 30 to pin 87 at the ASD relay.

4. Check for 12 volts to the Dark Green/Orange wire at the single wire connector at the distributor. This wire feeds the positive side of the coil.

markjhicks says:

I will assume you have a 2.5 engine. Here is the test procedure for no spark, but you have injector pulse. If you do not have have injector pulse and no spark the test is different.
1. To test the coil in the distributor, disconnect the Automatic Shut Down (ASD) relay and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors.

TexasBarBQ says:

my 2000 Chrysler Cirrus 6 cylinder wont get any fire to the plugs. rebuilt the starter and still no start. could this be from the Cam Sensor, cause when I do a search for a cam sensor on my model at auto zone I only get a round peace of felt paper. It looks nothing like the video’s cam sensor. its called a Duralast/Camshaft Position Sensor on Auto zone parts.

markjhicks says:

Great News!
Thanks

Abel Tamaca says:

I did changed the sensor on my 03 dodge neon thanks for the video the code is gone and car running perfect

Abel Tamaca says:

Going to replace the sensor ASAP to see what happens, thanks

markjhicks says:

It might still start with a P0340, but usually your injector timing will be off.

carlosjesus505 says:

I own a 97 Mitsubishi eclipse with the same 420a engine and the car used to randomly die but I changed the crankshaft sensor and problem was solved … just recently it randomly dies while driving and codes come up as a camshaft sensor now? Should I replace the camshaft sensor is that what is causing the car to die?? Please help?

markjhicks says:

Normally a cam sensor will not cause a no-start. Most cam sensors are a Hall Effect type and can not be tested with an ohm meter. What is the year, make model and engine size of your vehicle. Does it have injector pulse?

Alex G says:

Great video. Hey i have a no start with no spark. I was told that it might be my camshaft sensor. Before buying a new one i want to know if their is a way to check the resistance of the camshaft sensor with a multimeter.

Good point!! Thank you.

markjhicks says:

Take the sensor off again and check the seal very close. You will probably find where it had rolled a little. If this is the case, make sure it is not torn. If torn you will need a new one before you replace the sensor.

I am talking about scanning a code. You will need to look at the cam signal PID.

I do have innova 3120 scan tool but there no code to scan because I disconnect the battery, I don’t know if it will read something

markjhicks says:

Did you put a labscope or scan tool on it, this is only way to be sure you are getting the cam signal. All thats left is the wiring and PCM.

felplay vina says:

cram sensor replace it, the cam sensor no signal, the connector have 9 v 5v signal and ground I replace used distributor cause it came with the cam. timing belt are okay according with my repair

markjhicks says:

It is common for the crankshaft position sensor to cause the no spark issue. Have you checked or replaced it?

felplay vina says:

Hi markjhicks my 98 Voyager 3.0L crank no start, the cam sensor it not sending signal to pcm, I replace the distributor with the cam sensor and no solution, 4 month ago I change the water pump, well the crankshaft bolt bend the timing belt move, fix the timing belt, what can cause no cam signal?
I checked
all fuses and relay crank sensor replace and still no spark.

I need some help !!! my sunfire suffered a a heated, the car didn’t start and the mechanic told me that its needs a re-ring, after the job was made the car did start but the computer gives a code p0340, the car makes explosions and has no power , we changed the cranck sensor, at the beggining the computer didn’t give us a code but after a while the code came back, the mechanic told me that he checked the wiring conexions and they are ok he also checked the distribution chain and its is on time.

Thanks a lot for making this video, I saved my girlfriend a bundle by doing this replacement myself. The job was done on an ’04 Dodge SX 2.0, only difference from this video to my own work on the car was the CPS used 4 8mm bolts, not the 10mm as stated in this vid.
