Wow man, amazing!!! Thanks for posting that video for all to see. Today I
bought a 6hp and the recoil assembly is exactly the same as this unit. So
this is very helpful…

Question though, the guy I bought it from didn’t know the fuel mixture?
Would it probably be 50:1 mix also?

chrysleroutboarddude says:

Well i don’t think Chrysler made a 9.5, But i think the length is about 4
1/2′. If your motor is a 9.9 it is a 2 cylinder, 2 cycle that uses a 50/1
gas oil mix with a good TCW-3 oil.

TheIlegal091068 says:

Nice video man, i have a couple questions for you, I do have a 9.5
Chrysler,I think is a 79, acording to the information on it. I am puting
back the recoil, but if i need to replace the rope, is the rope has to have
an specific length? second question…Is my outboard a 2 cylinder or 4
cylinder? and last but no least…about the mix on the gas…what is the
ratio…/ thanks in advance, and hoping to hear from you. Nick

chrysleroutboarddude says:

You can get parts at Mercury marine dealer.

bohica1955 says:

great video just what I was looking for, where can i purchase the parts at?
bendix seems to be broke, as in retaining grove at bottom is now a washer
and completely separated from bendix also spring is deformed slightly &
missing brass retainer (which I did not know about) as you described in
your video. Duck season opens next weekend & during routine inspection I
discovered the recoil was broke. Your help is much appreciated.

Dogg416 says:

watch?v=PSjSG03WcYA Can you take a look at my motor and see what you
think…. I cleaned the points and adjusted them I also replaced the
condensers, cleaned the carb, replaced the plugs and checked for spark ”
they are both there”. It still dies after a while and vibrates alot

Matthew Kennedy says:

I know. It’s really nice having a full set of identical parts. I grew up
with these motors fishing with my dad so there is a little sentiment that
comes with them. I have them both running great, just need to finish up a
few details here and there.

chrysleroutboarddude says:

Well thank you for the comment, and you are welcome. You will find that the
1970 9.6 and the 1971 9.9 are mechanically identical.

Matthew Kennedy says:

Thank you. Very helpful video. I’m currently working on a 70 sea king 9.6
and a 71 chrysler 9.9 that have been sitting since the early 90s. I’m
really enjoying your videos.

chrysleroutboarddude says:

Sorry i do not have part’s for sale. You can get the part’s at Mercury
marine dealer.

Jonthropology says:

Very helpful video, but I am having other issues as well with the starter
and need parts. please email me at jonvaldivia35@gmail.com if you have
parts for sale.

Igor Bojovic says:

Can we contact via mail, I need some help and parts for similar model…
slipstream@sezampro.rs Thx !

chrysleroutboarddude says:

The video’s i have on tune up apply to your motor, and my latest video is a
how to on your water pump, As far as the recoil rope i just use standard
1/4″ recoil rope. sorry but i don’t know of any decals for sale.

damnyankeeou812 says:

I have a 9.9 and I cant find the spring and the plastic tip. Would you sell
me one of your welded sprngs and the tip? PLEASE E-mail me back at
damnyankeeou812@yahoo.com Thank you, You are the man

chrysleroutboarddude says:

That will work. Thanks for the tip.

marszop says:

One more;I did not weld screwdriver, I just use small vise-grip.Working
perfectly.Thanks again.

1thebigdawg1 says:

What is the oil mix in this motor?

huntfishutah says:

Please don’t. Do not let the trolls get to you. They just want attention
remember, do not feed the trolls.

jeff sharron says:

Thanks again C.O.D. for sharing your knowledge with all of us!

1thebigdawg1 says:

I was wondering if you had any recoils I could get from you for a 15hp. I
have the lower mount and now other parts for the recoil. Also do you have a
bendix you would sell, same motor have a broken one. Also do you any fuel
nipples you would also sell? Both sides. Let me know.

timm2020 says:

I have a 55hp Chrysler outboard. The flywheel is really hard to spin by
hand, and the Starter has a hard time spinning it as well. Is there a way
to loosen the flywheel so it spins easier? Thanks

dkdk6142010 says:

Hi I do not have a welder and need that welded spring in this video I have
a 6 HP sea king, I believe its a 1965 If I could bring you my spring to
weld or swap with one you have that would be great, and I could pay you for
your time. I live in Roseville MN and would drive to you for that. Please E
mail me back at dkdk6142000@yahoo.com Thanks so much for the videos!

chrysleroutboarddude says:

Are you replacing just the rope?

chrysleroutboarddude says:

I think you have more problems, and no there is not any way to loosen the
flywheel,it sound’s like you might have a bad bearing some where.

Dan Hiller says:

I ordered some parts and got the recoil fixed thanks for this video it
helped! now it just needs to be tuned I found your video for that. One
question is there any way to tell what year the motor is? it was a guess on
ordering parts

Ben Rawstron says:

Hi again, Thanks for the quick response. I have managed to find a 15 HP
engine block with all it’s internal components but the crankshaft is short,
made for a CD ignition. In addition I found a 12.9 HP autolectric
crankshaft which is identical to my current one but is constructed for a
12.9hp, not a 15hp block. I recently found the service manual which states
the bore and stroke for the 9.9-15 are all different. Could the two
crankshafts be swapped and still work despite the difference? Thanks.

chrysleroutboarddude says:

Thank you, But i have had some bad comment’s and i am thinking about
removing this video. And may refrain from making any more how to video’s in
the future.

marszop says:

Thanks a lot for this video.Help me a lot and save money too. Thanks again.

chrysleroutboarddude says:

Are you sure that it is a late 60s motor and not a early 60s, i do not
think they made a 15hp in the late 60s. If it is a early 60s motor it is
made by Gale and that was a division of OMC and use’s common parts with
Evinrude. Can you make a video of the motor or send me a photo?

Ben Rawstron says:

Hi, I have a Chrysler 12.9 HP outboard from 1971 and I have heard that the
engine block on the 9.9 through 15 is the same and the only difference is
the carburetor. Is this true? I am in need of a new engine block and
crankshaft due to pitting on the cylinder sleeves and needle bearings.
Thanks, Ben R.

1wyatt2 says:

Thank you for the video I used it to help with my 1957 West Bend Barracuda
12HP. I took the recoil off a year ago when I first got the motor I could
not figure it out until I watched your video. Thanks Again

Mark Vaughn says:

I have a 6 hp no bolt in top only way I could figure to rewind it was
screwdriver. Piece that has cotter pin running thru it is broke on one side
where the pin goes. when you get the pin in it it sounds like the spring is
slipping from below. can you help

cara barone says:

hi man your vids have been a lot of help ,i got a 15hp viking late 60s with
no spark , i got it running now i just have to adjust points and rebuild a
one of the points (plastic part) broke , i just woder where can i get
points for this model i been looking everywhere , i am in Ontario Canada
,ope you could help thanks man for your vids

mistress750 says:

i tried to put a booger weld on the end but ended up melting the plastic
piece. would you be able to send me one and i can pay you via paypal

chrysleroutboarddude says:

Humm interesting i wonder if you have the wrong arbor, All of the Chrysler
motor’s have the screw, but the OMC made motor’s have a similar recoil but
without the screw, and the way you are describing this i am thinking that
someone tried to use a omc one in your motor. IS your recoil the same as
this one?

chris shaffer says:

Your video saved me big time. I had a fuel line leak under the recoil
assembly so I had to remove it to repair the hose. Once that was done I
spent hours trying to figure out a way to re-tension that spring. I never
would have figured it out. Many thanks and keep up the great videos.

Steve Merritt says:

Could you do a tune-up video on the 9.9. I am very interested in how to
maintain mine properly. And how to check and change the water pump.

Sims Terje says:

i’ll check it out, thx!!

Kristopher Heidelberger says:

I have a question on a 15hp sea king, what is the reason for no spark? Is
there a common issue? Do you work on boat motors for people? If so email me
at hpiplumbing@gmail.com thanks

chrysleroutboarddude says:

As long as it is the low profile it will work.

mercmack says:

first question i want to ask is how come theres sunshine in the back
ground.hahaha I actully found my two chrysler OB rewind tools the other day
while looking for some else..glade to see you back working on engines
again..Am doing a overhaul on a 125 force myself..

lovemydakota says:

Trying to recoil my pull start, do you know how to do it on a 75 Johnson
25hp? Would be great if you can help… thanks

chrysleroutboarddude says:

What is the model #?

chrysleroutboarddude says:

I am not understanding your ?? If the motor has this recoil it is the same.

sasquath logger says:

make a video on a 18hp Johnson

Rettich Saft says:

Hello dude;-) I have an older 15 HP Year bought 76 and rejoice in your
video to solve the problems. Thank you thank you Hallo dude 😉 Habe mir
einen älteren 15 HP gekauft Baujahr 76 und freue mich über dein Video um
die Probleme zu lösen. Danke danke

chrysleroutboarddude says:

You got it.. 4.4-15hp use the same recoil 1968-1985 low profile motor’s.
But it has to be the low profile motor. I have video’s on all 3 type’s of
recoil’s Chrysler used.

chrysleroutboarddude says:

The 9.9 is not the same but the 12 12.9 and 15 are the same bore and stoke
with different intake manifold carb and cylinder head.

Tony R says:

Awsome man this was so much help. its hard for me to find parts for these
things and mine looks like i just bought its clean.

Jerry Moua says:

Hey I haven’t gotten the time to post but the day after you fixed the
recoiler for me I took it out and after about 5-8 pulls the recoiler got
stuck and I opened the outboard to see what was wrong and the recoiler just
became undone. But I was wondering if you are selling any 25-30 hp outboard
I can trade/buy from you. Thanks
