Your not supposed to pull the rope to the end.

roberth42 says:

Would you be able to help me find the starter recoil plastic gear for my
Viking 6HP? I found 1 on eBay but they won’t ship to Canada. Is there a
part number I can search for?

outboardsbill says:

a very useful deminstration.,thanks!

adz62 says:

Picked up a 1967 6hp Chrysler model 6702 out of a garbage and the shifter
won’t move out of neutral and fly wheel won’t spin, prop spins freely.
Pistons do not appear to be seized. What might it be. I am new to
outboards. Thank you

chrysleroutboarddude says:

@the50cctrail I will try to get a video of the recoil in the next week or
so.

chrysleroutboarddude says:

Sorry but yes that is the part #

chrysleroutboarddude says:

Ok i made a video.

chrysleroutboarddude says:

Yes Yes and yep!!! You got it…

TheParamedic0025 says:

I have a 6 hp just like that one you have . The recoil spring is broken but
I also believe that I am missing the throttle linkage . As you look at the
carburator , and advance the timing plate , I dont have the part that
attatches to the carburator that slides on the plate to increace the
throttle as it advances the timing . Can you show me what that looks like .
Or even better , perhaps you have that part I can buy from you .
paramedic@gmail.com . Thanks

chrysleroutboarddude says:

I just fill the spool, i think about 48″ of 1/4 rope.

mastersinper95 says:

whats the name of the video

chrysleroutboarddude says:

This is the wrong video for your motor, please see my video for Chrysler
9.9/15 recoil, and if you like i can fix it for you i am in the north metro.

chrysleroutboarddude says:

I do have that video, not on this motor but it work’s the same way.

corey bryant says:

Really helpful, what would be cool is if you showed how to remove the whole
assembly and replace the pull start…. my manual doesnt really show it….
keep up the good work you are a awesome resource

mistress750 says:

i have a 9.9 that all the internals look the same as the video. But my
recoil spring is broken. Do you have one for sale and or a video on how to
replace the recoil spring. I have done some searching and that is a video
that alot of people would love to see. thanx

chrysleroutboarddude says:

It is hard to say, it might be Crankshaft bearing’s..

chrysleroutboarddude says:

Ok ok i get it i will go and make a video right now! I do not have part’s
for sale but you can go and get at mercury outboard dealer it is about $60
us.

kdsalnl says:

i have the same motor but on mine if you pull the cord out to far the rope
gets jammed up its an easy fix just have to take the over off and push the
rope down and it comes free and whines back up but dont know why it dose
that

mastersinper95 says:

problems with the recoil what am i doing wrong?

chrysleroutboarddude says:

This is the wrong video for your motor, but i do have the vid you need check
it out! and if you need more help let me know.

chrysleroutboarddude says:

Sorry i have been out of town. What year is your motor? But i think you can
get it at Mercury marine dealer.

roberth42 says:

Sorry I too was away or the last few days. Its a 1969 i believe. Viking
6HP. I found on ebay part number 40674-4 but unfortunately they won’t ship
to Canada. Is this the correct part number?

adz62 says:

The gear that is on the shaft to the power head but located in the lower
unit, how does it come out? The gear is seized in the bushing and fused
with the gear in the back of the lower unit so neither gear is moving. There
is a spring pin located on the top side too. Does that bronze bushing
thread out to release the gear? I’m doing my best not to break anything and
so far so good with your guidance. I started taking pictures this morning
but have to get kids to upload for me.

Tyler Chaves says:

helped me alot thankss !!

chrysleroutboarddude says:

The name is Chrysler and West Bend outboard motor recoil repair

Jonathan Ayling says:

Hey, great video and so glad I found you. Can you tell me how long the cord
should be on the 9.9 motor?

chris meehan says:

hey i have the same motor and i was woundering were i might find a stern
bracket [the piece that connects the motor to the boat] mine broke. i
watched alot of your vids nice motors i realy like the johnson you restored
the 5.5.

adz62 says:

Turns out the lower end gear box was filled with sand and not oil causing
the shifter not to move and the shaft not to rotate. Engine now turns over.
Shifter stuck in neutral so prop spins. Do you know if the lower gear box
can be taken apart? I found 1 allan screw under the gear box but it is not
coming apart.

the50cctrail says:

Hey I have a 1978 Chrysler 10hp and have to put a new shaft and plastic
rope collected piece so I just ordered that but / envy tips on switch
everything and same with changing the water impeller thanks

the50cctrail says:

thanks alot

adz62 says:

Prop off & looks like another pin on shaft.Remove? Removed one retaining
ring and flanged plate and under that was big snap ring that holds the
plate covering gear. Plate has 2 threaded holes. Do I use these holes with
a puller to remove the plate and expose the reverse gear? Thank you.

Jerry Moua says:

So apparently I was fishing in MN in the metro area and pulled my outboard
and the string just came off the outboard. (I just bought the motor with
the boat and it’s my first boat) I have the same motor but its 15 hp. The
model number is vwb 52119E and my circle recoil is white and it is not
black. I have no idea how to fix it but I’m thinking about just taking it
to the shop. it also takes me around 10 pulls for the motor to start. I
might just have to clean it out and start the motor properly.

chrysleroutboarddude says:

Do you have the lower unit in two parts? The pinion gear comes out from the
top, when the lower 1/2 of the lower unit is apart. This might be ez’er by
phone i will P/M you my phone #

adz62 says:

Thanks for holding my hand through my first outboard lower unit tear down.
I have watched many of your videos and appreciate you taking the time to
post them and answer questions.

chrysleroutboarddude says:

On that motor 1ST remove the prop, then there is a snap ring that holds the
bearing carrier remove that, then the bearing, then the reverse gear, then
you will see a nut on the top side remove that, then the Allan screw, then
unscrew the shift rod, now the lower 1/2 of the lower unit will come off.

chrysleroutboarddude says:

Not a problem! Hear to help…
