Upper and Lower Ball Joint Change in a Chevy Half Ton Two Wheel Drive 1500

Changing out upper and lower ball joints on a Chevy 1500 1996 work truck. I left the crooked start of the press in the video because it happens all too often…

Hey when you installed the new lower bail joint, did you install with or
without the rubber boot?

Kyle Northrop says:

Just did one of these today at work. What a PITA. I think I got 4 hours
into one side alone. The upper rivets would not come out after grinding the
upper rivet heads flush. Then I removed the upper control arm and grinded
the heads off the other side, then after 30-40 mins. of beating the old
upper ball joint was off. The lower wouldn’t pop out of the knuckle, then
after beating and prying I got the knuckle hub off (mine was 4×4) and then
I tried pressing off the lower ball joint but it wouldn’t go. Tons of rust
penetrate and heat later it popped out.

did the upper and lower ball joints on my 89 silverado last year. I been a
mechanic for 20+ years. on the uppers i would usually use a angle grinder
or a air cut off wheel then use a punch to knock the rest of the rivot out.
found with experimenting though that using an air powered hammer works
fastest and best for me, just a few seconds per rivot then uses a hammer
and punch and ur done, on the lowers, go rent or buy a ball joint press if
you dont have one.

Great video. Very helpful!

yuckinfukkinfahoo says:

I will sometimes just lightly tap the corner of the press with my deadblow
and she realigns with less stress and you dont force it. especially when
she is goin crooked. You just blew it in with the big gun ,.LOL Great Vid.

Maria Martinez says:

Would anyone know if dura last ball joints are worth it. I already know
bout moog products I’m hoping to get at least 100,000 mile out of dura last
ball joints.

J King says:

I’m going to try to do this on my own truck, but my only question is my did
you have to the torch?

Kstrohm93 says:

And the specific size such as 1 3/8 33MM etc.

68NEWGUY says:

Piece of 9 wire helps hang the spindle, if you don’t have any tall
jacks/stands. Well hell even when working on the ground for that matter.

187lazyjoker says:

So the upper ball joint is held on by the castle nut?

dirtmister16 says:

having a hard time finding info on a s10 truck, but for a 2wd it should be
the same setup isn’t it? if anyone can chime in on it i would appreciate
it. thanks.

a buddy and I are going to put two stands under my front end and tackle
this on the half ton. Thanks a bunch for the awesome tutorial.

Very informative video. I just changed my uppers and lowers on my 1990
Chevy truck very similar to the one in this video. My lower ball joint on
the drivers side was comming out of the control arm and I had to replace it
ASAP. Luckily the control arm was ok, and the new lower ball joint pressed
in very tight. I think that the lower ball joint pressed out when I spun
out one winter and slammed into the ditch, no body damage, but I think
that’s when the ball joint popped out of the arm.

Oldsmob455 says:

@skinnyhenry Think your comment has a typo but to answer your question a
torch is not needed for the job. A angle grinder works well to get the
rivet heads off.

Oldsmob455 says:

Sometimes no matter what you do they want to start crooked. You tap em
straight, apply pressure and then it goes off to one side again. The way
she goes.

Oldsmob455 says:

The holes in the upper control are are already there from the rivets.

daniel alvarez says:

How do you make holes .do.you drill em

WVNewsVideo says:

Despite 40-45 years of wrenching, I’ve never used a ball-joint press. Came
by here because I loaned my manual out and wanted to make sure I didn’t
forget something. Great vid as always man, screw those idiots on CL. I told
you before you about the hammer trick instead of the pickle fork, just to
give you an idea how long I’ve been watching. Now if my impact and
compressor are up to it, I’m about to bust some lower ball-joints.

There is such a thing as over filling a grease boot and that was a perfect
example.

Kstrohm93 says:

Do you know off hand what size the upper and lower ball joint nuts sizes
are? Metric os SAE?

THETGROVER says:

Wow I would have u touch any of my shit u put 16 pumps of grease in it!
