Great video. My speedometer of 2003 Chevy Silverado died and the mechanic wanted to change the entire unit for $800.  For a grand total of 5 dollars (cost of stepper motor in ebay) I replaced the stepper motor as per the instructions given by Peetre and I am all set.  Thank you

Could this guy have used a BIGGER soldering iron?…my gosh, that thing he was using was HUGE!!! It must have been a 60 watter with a 3/16" tip on it…A hint for DIY'ers…all you need is a 25 watt iron with a fine tip for this work…I'll be surprised if he didn't overheat the bridges and weaken the tracks on the board…perhaps that's why he didn't finish the rest of this vid for the reinstallation and testing…
…just sayin'…

GM Gauge Repair says:

Using a professional desoldering gun is the proper process. Putting tape at the end of the needles is no way accurate. The black colored stepper motors your are seen installing do not hold up and will eventually fail only leading to another repair in the future. 2003 to 2006 models have up to 5 issues: (1)Gauges fail 1 by 1 because of defective stepper motors. (2) Dim or dead VFD displays which are the PRNDL and DIC(driver info center). (3) Back lighting at night dim or dead behind the gauges, not the VFD's or digital displays.(4) Intermittent power issue where the gauge cluster and the entire panel will eventually fail leaving only your back lighting bulbs, blinker bulbs and "Check Engine" MIL lit up. (5) Solder joints and bad parts on the circuit board. There can also be software updates and need to be updated on the circuit board. If you're going to ship your cluster off and want it rebuilt properly with a guarantee, it should be done right once and once only without the inconvenience of inferior experience and inferior parts with no guarantee.

I wonder if that's the issue with my gas gauge on the Caddy I bought from you. The needle bounces around like crazy if the tank isn't full.
