How to Replace Broken Door Handle on Chevy HHR The Easy Way

In this video I show you how to replace the interior door handle for a 2006-2011 Chevy HHR. All other installation videos involve totally removing the door panel and drilling out the plastic rivets to replace the entire handle assembly….

Here is a link to the part used in the video: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018H273VQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is a good video and it's helped a lot of people, based upon the comments. But sometimes the "entire assembly" that you mentioned has to be removed. I just replaced a handle in a 2006, that had been worked on, previously. They had used glue and screws to remount the assembly (it had been removed in a professional repair shop, according to my wife – not sure why they had to remove the assembly if it had a stock, plastic pin.). Now the pin was metal and there was no way to remove the pin without removing the entire assembly, again. It was a huge pain in the ass. Anyway, as long as you can get the pin out you're fine – otherwise, you have to remove the assembly to which you referred. That's why you see the videos you mentioned. They're not crazy people who don't know what they're doing. In retrospect, a person might be able to remove a metal pin with an electric cutting tool….maybe. I dunno – there's not much room to work.

I’m still confused, The plastic jacket around the cable/wire just at the point where it attaches to the latch broken away. The cable/wire is still attached the latch, and still pulls the cable/wire when you pull on the latch it will not open the door. I don't know if I need to replace the cable/wire or if there is a way to just replace the latch and and attach the cable/wire back tighter. ????

Theresa Rohloff says:

My handle is still connected and not broken but it does not open the door from the inside. Is it just a case of doing what you have here to fix it or is there likely some other part that is broken and needs replacement? TheScottHerald@aol.com

Connie Gibson says:

I hope it is this easy, I have been dealing with this broke door for over 3 years now.

Eric Vice says:

Ok. I have two questions.

That piece that you said "make sure your door handle comes with one of these before you rip it out". Is it possible to salvage the old one?

Which leads me to my next question. The only person who uses my back seat is my dog and I would actually prefer he NOT have door handles back there. LOL. Can I take a donor handle from the back door? They look identical.

These cars are pieces of shits!

Dexter Sanders says:

Thanks for this video. I paid over $100 to replace the first broken handle. I watched your video and just replaced the 2nd handle myself.
