john imburgia says:

The truck looked pretty good until you beat the crap out of it with a hammer, lol!

IamTeotwayki says:

HOLY SHIT! I drive a ’95 and it’s not nearly that bad despite being in Pennsylvania all these years. I’m getting ready to do similar repairs though. The truck had new fender flares put on it a few years back and now I just need to get some work done on the driver side rocker. Watching that rust tear down though, uh, it’s like watching a needle go in your arm lol.

kenman1717 says:

wow, i’m glad my ’03 is not that bad. i’m tapped on the box sides with a ball peen hammer, nothing went through. and I’m glad my rockers are not rusted.

jwmckin08 says:

At least this truck wasn’t rusted as bad as the 01 Silverado

walleye17ao says:

Where do u live

Jonathon Her says:

damnnnn you CRAZYYYYYYYYYYYY ahhah first few mins.

jwmckin08 says:

Shit GM, this is America’s 2nd best selling vehicle. Hopefully the newer generation of Silverados are made better than the previous ones. So far, I haven’t seen an 07 or newer model with rust.

bunning63 says:

Wondered about this a few times, as you say there appears no cavity protection at all. Thats really crap for a modern vehicle. Used to see the problem here in New Zealand but not anymore. Policy used to be if you can’t see it, don’t paint it. No vehicle is assembled locally anymore.

spelunkerd says:

People are going to do like I am, start with vid #1 and watch all. I’m having a little difficulty getting them all in order — it would help if you put them all in a playlist (chev silerado) to help those who come along after. I think this is going to be a great series to come.

SSully31 says:

my 2005 silverados rocker panels look exactly like that, again a fucking 2005! fuck you illinois!

Tigersfan829 says:

The big thing for vehicles is this: WAX YOUR VEHICLES
I’ll be picking up a 2002 silverado either tommorrow or monday. Does have a little rust spot on both sides of the truck on the bottom corner of the front wheel wells. I’ll probably wait until spring to fix it though.

armadillo platypus says:

possibly underbody wax,like waxoyl.

armadillo platypus says:

the answer…cavity wax.used in all European and japanese cars for the past 20+ years.
i have a 15 year old toyota…zero rust, and our roads are salted every winter.

netrioter says:

My 1997 Grand Am GT has zero rust anywhere on it and its a northern Ohio car for 14 of its years…the former owner had the underneath sprayed with some sort of heavy oil…worked beautiful.

silversolb18 says:

glad i live in ga and dont have to worry about rust issues!

cyberhornthedragon says:

and the rocker panels… WHAT rocker panels??? rrrrust disguised as rocker panel

Veikra says:

oh yeah . A tribute to rust

Bighappy says:

I have an 83 S10 with Rockers about like that. I’m intersted to see how you cut them out to replace them.. I know you have done a couple of videos like this, but I haven’t seen the cuts very well. I’m also intersted in the cab corners.

Matt Tester says:

You should make a montage of you hitting rust with that hammer, I could watch it for hours with the same look of terror on my face.

Blazer02LS says:

It would BUT those would cost more. You see a LOT of SMC/plastics used on vehicles that actually hide the problem areas. They trap the crud between them and the steel parts and make the problem worse. I look mine over using one of those cheap HF cameras. Those are great for looking inside the panels to find rot.

Blazer02LS says:

Some do BUT but most don’t want to pay the money for it. Mainly because the current mindset seems to be “I’ll only have the vehicle for 3-4 years then trade it in, let the next owner worry about it” Problem is that some of these vehicles get delivered with rust already starting! So if you don’t stop it then it’s too late.

Blazer02LS says:

Most of the state got 8-12″ then another storm of 4-5″, THEN the temperature changed and for the last week the temps have been over freezing and warm breezes. I had almost 18″ of snow on the lawn until last tuesday. There is now about 4″ left with a LOT of bare spots and mud. Can’t even try going ice fishing …

Blazer02LS says:

The rocker rust is because they put “drain” holes and open areas to flush out the dirt/salt. The catch is that dust/salt/dirt/water all form a sludge that doesn’t drain out. If you want the same result take a chunk of steel, bury it in some mud made with saltwater.

Blazer02LS says:

The ONLY cars that don’t rot in the salt belt are “Cozy Coupes”, DeLorean and Vette bodies. If it has steel on it you WILL have rust. I have seen NEW cars setting on a hauler for delivery that had rust on the frame rails! Now with the calcium spray and beet juice mix it get’s even worse.

boy2cuda says:

Yes! Rust repair! Now your talk’n!!!!

MonsterLilly says:

is this problem specific to US cars? how do german/japanese cars perform?
being an Aussie (without snow and salted roads) this kind of rust is just obscene to me on anything that is still registered to drive. toyota/mitsi panels do tend to outlast the local ford/holden crap though………. and still i drive a ford hahaha,

RobsPackanShine says:

good stuff buddy

danelectro68 says:

I’m watching……looks a nice truck, shame about the ruuuuuussst

Veikra says:

1:39 fricking phone !

Veikra says:

yeah, the consumer has to do the rust preventing, shooting stuff inside the panels since they have no paint there. So need to keep them all gooey. 19 yo silverado here, no rust. but tons of rustproofing. ( you can see over 3/4 thick worth of it when I cleaned the frame on my vids)

QuainBuilt says:

Gettin my fix on again… you never got back to me about painting the 2010 ram

sms373 says:

Wow thats a shame that this happens. How many miles are on this truck?

WakeyWes03 says:

where are you located in new york?

Brent Dantin says:

Who makes your stickers ?

EricTehRedneck says:

ohhhh man I love it when the poker hammer makes an appearance!

nexson says:

about damn time!!

KrzychOlsztyn says:

holly shiait!!!! rocker panels disapeared Years ago ! 🙂

Smokeasammie says:

Hey Shawn from you experience working on so many cars. which manufacturer tends to rusts less. I know that all eventually rust just wondering if there is anybody out there that stands up a little better than the rest? Thanks for the vid.

1011theguy says:

your drive way must be rust and metal

erectionaffection says:

pisser do you pack the rockers with anything or do you just weld the sheet metal and then apply the body filler’s and then paint i guess periodically waxing and washing a truck keep’s the ruuuuuuust away too man there’s alot of salt on that chevy sure that aint helping matter’s any
