It could be an actuator or a vacuum leak issue. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Man! Thanks for this video. Very helpful for someone who who is not a mechanic like myself. Was discussing with a friend just now about how my 1500 HD hasn’t been engaging the 4WD and he told me about this. A google search led me here. Great video!

You may want to check the owners manual for the recommended weight on that vehicle. They can vary greatly between different vehicles. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

What oil should use my front axle?the same as the differential ?

1aauto says:

You may want to check the CV or U joints in the front axles to see if they are freezing up. Hope this helps you out.

Thank you for the reply. My truck is actually an 02 Avalanche 2500. Today I looked and found that I have an actuator on the transfer case. I did your test and listened for the actuator sound and heard nothing. After a little more research I found that the ground wires on the frame under the drivers door were never tightened at the factory. After a few turns of a ratchet the truck shifts flawlessly. Good luck with your part business. Putting out the videos is a great idea to help sales.

1aauto says:

There were two different types of actuators that came on those trucks. Some of them were an axle actuator and some of them were mounted on the transfer case. You can either check under the truck to see what type your truck has, or if you give the dealer your VIN # they could tell you what type your truck has. We carry both types on our website 1aauto.com 888-8944-3393

Just watched your other video which I believe was an actuator replacement on a 1500. I have an ’02 2500 that has been stubborn to switch between Hi to Lo for some time now. Today it went into Lo and is stuck there. I need to change the actuator. Does my truck have both the axle actuator and the transfer case actuator? I would think that if it does that the other (transfer case actuator) is at fault. What should I change? Thank you again for the great videos.

1aauto says:

It may be a bad actuator.

Have a 99 silverado z71 and i push the button but it just makes a clicking sound. It sounds like it is trying to go in but doesn’t. That sound like the actuator to you?

It might help to resolve your issue. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Excellent Video! Thank You. I watched because I am looking at buying a 2001 GMC Sierra that needs this part replaced. It was stuck in 4 and the current owner replaced the transfer case and the dash switch. He then unplugged the actuator and it went back to 2. Anyway, I have a 2004 suburban that is giving me a service 4WD message, could this be the problem? It’s a Z71 but I assume that the transfer case and such is the same. Thanks!

1aauto says:

If the system happens to have any kind of vacuum lines that connect to it, you may want o see if there’s any type of a leak in it.

Michael Trask says:

Alright I have a killer question, please do not refer me to take it to the shop I replaced actchlator, the motor to the transfer case was changed, transfer case is working fine, front wheel actchulator, switch light works when you push fwd but fwd does not engauge. Could you please help me fix this problem I really need fwd. Thank you. Its a 2000 Gmc Sierra

1aauto says:

There could be either a fault with the transfer case, shift motor or the front differential. Bringing it into the shop and having them read the codes will be the best bet at this point.

phil childress says:

I can press the 4hi and it will engage, I can shift to neutral and press 4 lo and it engages, but the light continues to flash. It stops flashing in 2 hi. auto 4×4 flashes as well when it is pressed?

armenian49er says:

It was the actuator thank you

1aauto says:

We don’t have a vacuum or wire diagram for this vehicle. It could just be a weak actuator.

1aauto says:

You could try to turn the front tires by hand to see if they are rubbing of catching on anything.

1aauto says:

You could test the power going to the actuator with a test light. If there’s a check engine light on, you may want to have the code pulled to see what it’s pointing to.

armenian49er says:

My 99 suburban says service 4×4. The buttons change lights when u switch it. But could it be the actuator? The Guy I bought it from said the transfer case looked brand new.

Daniel Kwarteng says:

my 4×4 toyota surf manual front axel is catchy, is like something is holding the front tyres , i need ur help please

MrAjd1982 says:

i thought i read somewhere that the electronic 4×4 tahoes don’t use vacuum lines, i thought its all electronic, hence why it has an actuator, idk could be wrong, do you know where i could get a diagram of what vacuum lines serve for the 4×4, thanks

1aauto says:

It could be, in the system runs off of vacuum, check the vacuum lines to see if any of them have a crack or are broken and need to be replaced. Hope this helps you out.

MrAjd1982 says:

now mine (2005 Tahoe LS) goes into 4hi and auto fine, it’s just the 4lo, i can hear the case trying to transfer over to 4lo but then just goes back to 2wd, would the actuator still be a cause with those symptoms

1aauto says:

Hi Jeff, You could put the truck in 4×4 mode jack the front end up and try to turn the front tires by hand. If they do not turn, then the transfer case is locked into 4WD. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Jeff Reid says:

I have a 2004 silverado Z71. Driving through snow just a few days ago, I heard a clunking sound, and from then on, there was no power to the front wheels. My 4×4 is manual shift, and the dash lights do come on, but again, no power to the front. Suggestions where to start? I’ve called around to get some ideas, and all I keep hearing is “you need a new transfer case”, or “you need a new front differential”, or “you need a new ………” you get the point. I need this fixed.

1aauto says:

HI Tony, I would check the vacuum lines under the hood to see if there’s possibly a vacuum leak which may be causing the 4wd to not fully engage.

Tony Pence says:

I have a 2005 z71 silverado 1500 that the four wheel drive does not work. The lights on the switch light up on initial start of the vehicle then nothing. Where would be a good place to start troubleshooting?

1aauto says:

It could definitely be the the issue but it could also be the transfer case shift motor. You might want to see if the motor is working first and then see if the actuator is pushing out when you hit the 4hi.
