I want to find an old V8 to restore and put it in a DIY go kart. How much
do one of these engines cost to rebuild. If I was able to find one in a
wrecking yard that needed restoration how much do you think it would cost.
Or any v8, it doesn’t need to be the same motor in this video. Just
something old and powerful for a go kart.
P.S. I’m new to all of this, so if I sound stupid, that’s why.
when the dots are lined up like that is that not number 6 cylinder at TDC
?
Yeah we did that and also my friends came over and used a degree wheel and
we set the timing and set it where com cams said but the headers are
turning red
when dots are lined up doyou put number one piston on top dead center or
does it matter
nice video man…. i have one quick question… how well does a rebuilt
engine compare to a new car?
Problem with rebuilding an engine is the vehicle sits for 2 weeks. Most
remans are cheaper than getting the engine rebuilt.Where I work at,call up
jasper and they send out an engine and call them back to pick up the core
bolted to crate.
@ronieboy44 Hi their, I have a chevy 283 Motor, does the engine has to be
on TDC on Piston #1 in order to take off the timing gear and reposition it.
Would that be correct?
how can u rebuild 350 for dirt bomber race car
Ron after veiwing you’r video’s I rebuilt a buick 231 somwhat similar G.M.
it runs like a rabbit!!! I’d proudly recomend your video’s. My gears in the
rearend are 2:73 not mutch power comes from them at all, do you have a dvd
on replacing gear ratio’s? I’f not its a recomendation not mutch out there
exept complicated manuals….
This is a pain to do with engine still in the truck.
I know the distributor based ones you need to install the spark
plugs/wires in a certain way but for the new computerized distributorless
cars do are they all preset by sensors to fire at the correct time provided
the cam/cranks shaft / timebelt is install correctly
I may not be the one you’re trying to ask, but that’s your average SBC.
Overhead valve, cam in block motor. Pushrods open and close the valves…
What you’re looking at is the block, upside down. It doesn’t have the oil
pan or heads on it.
can you sawp a chvy 94 5.7engine to a chvy 78 ?
Great instructions. Very good explanation, I wish there were more videos
like this. One question, where in the hell do you find a stock, brand new
camshaft for a chevy? Most of the part sites I frequent only show
aftermarket camshafts with increased lift etc. I don’t want that, I just
want a stock one for my truck rebuild but don’t want to pay out the nose at
the stealership.
@moneymaka775
Usally i use a large chisle and tap it off from behind..you may also hit it
between the teeth and make a split in the gear..it will come right
off..always install new gears…good luck.rc
something about the timing chain can be just soo confusing! :/
One of the stoutest cheap truck engines I have ever built was a .060 350
with stock dished pistons, a set of stock 305 HO 14014416 heads 1.84 1.50
valves, Melling MTC1 cam, an edelbrock performer, double row chain, and a
750 q-jet, manifolds and 2″ duals. It had tremendous torque, it is still
running great 12 yrs later
we are haveing a broblem with it not starting put new cam in and new timing
chain still will not start so what do i do plz call me at 317 658 1979
Hey Ronie, wanted to get your input. IIs it better ,perfromance wise, to
rebuild a good used 350 block or just get a new one ? ty
You got a video for np241 transfer case
sheck out a rear end from a monte carlo or caprice some of them have either
the 3.27 or 3.73 gears in em witch ell help you out or even check a chevy
s-10
ok i have a 1998 Ford windstar, and the guy at the shop wants to charge me
2k to replace something behind the timming cover that is leaking a gallon
of oil a day,and i told him not to do it and leave it alone,so could this
be whats leaking behind my timming chain cover the front oil seal or front
pan gasket???
LooB Need Lots OF LUBE!!
question, how do you tell which way to put the cam gear on the cam shaft?
is there only one way the gear will go on?
i dont think my timing chain is broken but i think my timing is off. do you
knwo who wto time it? its a 1966 pontiac tempest. 326 V-8 5.3.
what I am hopeing is most of the engines/types if you get the
crank/cam/timeing chain/belt correctly lined up the timing of the spark for
the igintions system/cylinders to fire when the pistons are top dead center
should be there (i.e no configuration of the ignition system) Can somebody
verify this or give me an answer to this, Both for older noncomputerized
distributor or later cars and the new non-distributor based computer ones
that work on opening battery ground via a transistor.
@paulsjunkcars they line up on the exhaust stroke of the #1 cylinder. Its
companion cyllinder, #6, will be on the compression stroke
Please watch: SUPER-EFFICIENT ENGINE Newest Design
@ratrodscot yes. but most 305 heads wont take anything bigger than a .420
lift cam and keep enough clearance to not crush the valve stem seals
1:22 i heard that before
Ive got the GM 350/290 HP crate motor in my 72 el camino and i want to put
the Comp Cams Thumpr in her, is it possible to change the cam without
pulling the motor?
thanks ronie, unfortunately I found out i have to replace my chain on a
ford 302, I replace the internal fuel pump, that didnt work, found out it the
ignition module was bad, replace that-no luck so it must be the chain
right?! arragh!
It will only go in onw way…check my ebay store for full videos..ebay
search “chevy camshaft dvd”..then visit my store to see all my
videos..Thanks..RC
not worth it when you can have the sound and performance of a 350
hey, armchair mechanic with what might be a very stupid question for
somebody: the timing chain is a very sort chain in your video, so do I
assume correctly this engine is an overhead valve engine? It looks like an
old-school push rod engine, with the camshaft below the cylinder block
right? and the cylinder block is not yet attached; you’e just working on
the crank case?
how can u tell if your timing is off ?
What about using ant-seize on the cam bolts?
Thanks!! the hammer worked well taking off the bottom gear.
Hello, I am doing a camshaft install on a 350 the camshaft went all the way
in with no problem but the cam doesnt rotate its like stuck in there, wat
did I do wrong? whatt do I have to do so it can rotate freely? And when a
new timing gear is bought do they come with the timing dots or that has to
be done seperate? Thanx in advance for any help.
i have a 1997 gmc sierra with the 5.7l 350…..what would be the avg price
of rebuilding the engine?
@Koolnumber9 no its not necessary to use eldelbrock, you can buy a nice
cloyes double roller chain and gear set.
I am wondering once you line up the dot on the camshaft to the dot on the
on the crankshaft and install the cam. Will the spark plugs / ignition
system fire for each cylinder when the piston is top dead center or. Does
something have to be set/lined up for the ignition system.
what if i turned the crankshaft without the timing chain on…does that get
the valves out of sync on an lt1
Great Video! I have a 1969 427 and believe I busted the timing chain
yesterday while getting on it. This will the first time I have changed a
timing chain. I have already checked the distributor and it does not turn
so am 90% sure it is the chain. The motor is pretty fresh rebuild maybe
2000 miles. I was doing about 90 miles per hr when it happened, big back
fire and the engine shut down. Do think I damaged and valves or possibly
broke the cam? Thanks again for the informational video!
does the dots line up on the compression stroke or exhaust?
My only problem after seeing the installation of the timing
chain/camshaft/crankshaft assembly is if the ignition system will have to
be timed with the rotation of the cam/crankshaft or if the crank/cam
position sensors do all that for you so you don’t have to worry about
timing the ignition system just have to worry about lineing up does. Can
you clear this issue up for me. I would imagine it may differ for inline ,
V , pushrod ,and other engine types.
if you are installing a new cam, or new bearings it would be wise to
replace the other. I would check the oil clearance on all the journals.
plastigage works good for checking to see if you have the correct bearings
but use a snap gauge(t gauge) and a micrometer to get oil clearance.
what assembly lube do you use and is that red or blue loctite thanks
