Did your Chevy 1.4L EAT its PCV Valve!? ~ 2011 – 2020 Cruze / Sonic / Trax GM Ecotec Turbo #Shorts

In this #Shorts video we’ll learn how to check whether the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) non-return bypass, or check, valve is still present in the intake manifold of all GM Ecotec 1.4L turbo engines. These engines are found in the Chevy Cruze, Chevy Sonic, Chevy Trax, and Buick Encore. This DIY visual check is specific for the GM Ecotec 1.4L turbocharged engine only.

It is a common problem for the small orange silicone non-return flapper valve embedded inside the intake manifold of this particular engine to become dislodged from the intake manifold and be “eaten” by the engine (Yikes!). Losing this PCV non-return valve will then result in problems down the way ultimately causing a check engine light (e.g. DTC P0299), as well as damaging related seals due to the elevated crankcase pressures that result. It’s a good practice to check that the non-return valve is present annually or so, such as whenever you do an oil change life reset, so you can get ahead of the problems that result from this weak design point.

The vehicle illustrated is a 2015 Chevy Sonic LT. But this visual check is applicable to the Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Sonic, Chevrolet Trax, and Buick Encore models with the GM Ecotec 1.4L turbo engine from model years 2011 thru 2020.

*Note:*
_To reinstall the ventilation hose we removed after inspection of the bypass valve, make sure the rubber o-ring is inserted first (if it came out of the elbow), then the hard plastic washer (if it came out of the elbow). Then push the metal retaining clip back onto the elbow all the way to the fully locked position (there’s a half way point but you need to go past this so it’s completely pushed on as it was before being removed). Position the hose back in the loop retainer I showed unlocking first in the video, and push the hose elbow down gently, but firmly, until the hose elbow metal clip will re-snap back into place on the intake manifold fitting/nipple. The manifold fitting is tapered, and will expand the metal clip as it slides down then snap into a groove on it. Once that’s back in place, press and lock the loop retainer to hold the hose in securely. Be firm, but gentle, if your vehicle is older as this is a brittle type of plastic and the hose can easily break._

*Repair Parts:*
If your non-return valve is missing, it’s time to either replace the intake manifold assembly, or investigate an aftermarket replacement for the non-return valve problem such as a Cruzekit. Here’s an eBay affiliate (paid link) search link for the GM 25200449 intake manifold: https://ebay.us/SafgOf and on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3pdkkkz

The ventilation hose can become very brittle with age, and can crack or even break before you even touch it. If yours needs replacing, here’s an eBay affiliate link for the GM 25193343 hose assembly: https://ebay.us/ASKsIL and on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2YXIxQO

Will code pop up if the valve fails? Or symptoms of it failing are?

@Craven-sk6ek says:

Cleared code but it came back on then went off 3weeks later its back on again…car is driven to work and back maybe 40miles a day

@isaacwhitefeather4146 says:

Will this cause p0299 code engine underboost

@thomassikes2472 says:

THE VIDEO IS ALL GOOG EXCEPT YOU FORGOT WHAT TO DO IF IT IS NOT THERE. HOW DO I REPLACE IT??

@toxikricc says:

What codes would this fix?

@jasonmurawski5877 says:

I have a 2012 with 112,000 miles. The nub is there but I have an oil leak and excessive crankcase pressure. What should I check next?

@WyattHolmes-oz6ln says:

Got a 2014 Cruze that appears to be missing the little orange nub. It's got 135,000 miles. I'm randomly getting a P0299 Turbo Underboost Code, even though I just replaced the turbo. Is it possible that the missing orange bypass valve is triggering this code? No other codes or problems currently noted.

Thank for your video

@AndreiDPop says:

This check is no longer valid. I had a customer recently install my cruzekits pcv fix kit on their manifold, and their nub was present, but the check valve flap on the other side of that wall was completely deteriorated.

Therefore, this test would have provide an incorrect diagnosis since his check valve was functionally missing, but the nub and center section was still there.

He had 96,000 miles on it and his car was a 2015.

Notice leaking oil under car last month and had p0420 (catalyst system low efficiency). Had the engine valve cover replaced and even the catlytic converter replaced. Everything was fine for a few weaks until i noticed the oil on ground again (a small amount). Few days later the p0420 code popped up again. I just checked and I dont have that orange nub. Do you think driving several days for a few days with that slight oil leak (about 100 miles total) ruined my new catalytic converter?

@boxing4life410 says:

What happens if the check valve by the turbo or the intake manifold is stuck open or closed cos I think the one by my turbo is causing it to start to smoke a little bit

@andrescabrera44 says:

I punched mine out on purpose and installed pcv fix.
