Did you have a problem with the little piece underneath the pulley?
So you took of the 3 15mm bolts and the big black pulley, then took out the 18mm bolt and are now trying to pull of that piece underneath….Yep sorry you just might be up a creek, sucks. Go big or go home I guess, best of luck to you!
Did you have any problems pulling that separate piece off underneath the harmonic balancer? I am having a hell of a time getting it off. i used a puller, with a 1/2 inch drive impact, but it still didnt budge…do i just need to get a big breaker bar, and give it hell? (im on my girlfriends youtube account, FYI. lol)
Really depends on the tools available. But reading about the job it does look like it is best to have a auto shop do it. It talks about raising the engine 3-4 inches to give you clearance to remove oil pan, which it says you need to do to take off the timing cover. This engine will damage valves if the timing chain for some reason has broken. If you think that it has broken, a good chance valves are damaged. More money for sure.
Best of luck
hi autotech i have a question for you. i have been browsing around for video’s on how to replace the timing belt on a 1996 chevy cavalier. my question is i was wondering can anybody due this kind of job? or is it something that only a mechanic can due because the engine has to be lifted out? the sooner you can reply? the sooner ill know if i should try to do this myself or let it sit. thank you and it would be useful to know.
Not really at the beginning. when you get to the old chain and gears. Then line up the timing marks, pull off old stuff and install the new
I have the 4.3 V6. In the Haynes manual it says to put cylinder 4 at TDC butbdoesnt tell me how to do that and in the vid you didn’t say anything about it so is that necessary?
Thanks for the vid but, it really would’ve help me to see you go thru all the described steps.
If I said it was a 2000, I guess I made a mistake, I did double check my information, and my book does list a 2.2L in a 1997 chevy S10
Well he def. lost time, pulling the motor out. ;P Seriously though if the timing chain is broken the crankshaft will turn without the camshaft, and thats an interference engine he would be very, very lucky if he didn’t bend any valves.
All these questions are way too complex. Most American cars are built with parts that are easy/cheap to replace. Rarely does one part attach to another w/out being removable. The tensioner is a whole separate part from the cover. Just take off one part at a time! Best option is to buy a Haynes manual from advance auto parts, they have detailed instructions on anything you would need to replace on your s10/Sonoma/hombre…
ok so my husband took the whole mortar out and thinking it was a oil pump and ran into the timeing chan being broke he stretched it and is ordering a new one how would he know if it lost time or not
Ya it should just be a 15? mm wrench to take out the center bolt for the tensioner. Belt tensioner that is.
did u remove the cover along with the tensioner? pully pulled off also. i have all my small bolts off and 2 under pan and shes not moving
is it necessary to remove the radiiator and such?
With the right tools, book time is like 2.2 hours. and ya after a couple times you can do better than that. Waiting for parts… kind of lose track of time….Thanks for writing.
how long did it take?
cool
