How To Rebuild A Cadillac Water Pump

How To Rebuild A Cadillac Water Pump

The water pump, which is a very important factor in how the engine operates, may need to be rebuilt or replaced over time due to rust build up or excessive use. Luckily, Caddy Daddy has Cadillac water pump rebuild kits available for a variety of years and this video to help you out with your project.

In this video, Josh will show you how to take a used 1959 Cadillac water pump and rebuild it with the parts available from Caddy Daddy. You need to make sure the new flange is in the same location when you replace the old one, so be sure to measure the distance first, if you are removing it.

Here are the steps:
1. Remove the cover plate
2. Remove the impeller and seal
3. Press the old bearing out of the housing with the flange
4. Clean up the housing
5. Press the new bearing into the housing with the flange
6. Install the seal with the impeller, along with a new gasket
7. Reattach the cover plate

This is a fairly large project to take on, but if you have the right tools and the time, this video will help guide you in making that water pump function correctly again once you install it back in your Caddy.

Enjoy!

Caddy Daddy says:

Water from the weep hole means that the seal in the water pump is bad or was installed incorrectly. It could also be caused by roughness or pitting on the sealing surface in the pump. If it is a pump you purchased rebuilt, then it is defective. If you rebuilt it, then you will need to take it apart and check your work. Josh

Thierry Lagarde says:

Very useful presentation, but a few questions left unanswered in my case (1956 Cadillac):

— The video shows the central "neck" of the impeller having already been cut to the correct length (at the seal surface side marked with blue ink). Do I need a lathe to do it?
— There is a brass ring in the kit, perfectly ajusted with the inside diameter of the compression seal. Is it where it belongs?
— Is the front sealing of the compression seal just done by a perfect contact of its ceramic surface with the pump housing matching surface? Pretty challenging, isn't it?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Memorable Rides says:

I used a combo of a small three arm puller arms with a two arm puller both from AutoZone worked really easy to pull the impeller off!

Don Olbers says:

Good job, great description.

Amy and Billy Radcliffe says:

ArmannHeidar says:

What is the torque on the cover plate bolts ?

Sal 1959 says:

Great video. The press seems vital to the whole operation. Cost for such a machine?

cabeza187 says:

Nice video. Now I just need a fancy press and Josh's tool.

James Kass says:

Thanks for showing us how to rebuild our water pumps, it was interesting. Yet again if you could show more close-ups of the unit (job) itself it would be appreciated.

BryantKHill says:

Great topic to show and thanks for doing it. Are the pumps for a '63 rebuildable? I still have my original.
