You absolutely did not have to remove the strut assembly. The ball joint nut, and the camber adjustment bolts were all. FYI, the torque on the camber bolts is 140 ft-lbs and I would recommend having the alignment checked out now. I do alignmemts for a Goodyear shop and am their ASE certified master technician. But good job none the less. On a side note, if the clunking/rattle is still there after you replaced your control arm, I'd recommend sway bar endlinks on both sides. Its a very common problem with that suspension set up. The MOOG problem solver is quite reliable from my experience.
