When I bought the car, it was just out of warranty by age but not by miles.
The fact that it was barely out of warranty and new to me (I couldn’t have
known about the problem sooner) were factors in the service manager of the
dealership being successful in advocating my case to GM which led to my
paying only $500 for this work. Had that not been the case, this would have
been a $6,000 repair, and slightly more if it had needed a new engine. The
engine was determined not to need replacement, and while I was a little
skeptical of that conclusion at the time, but they said the cylinders were
in excellent shape. I have since driven the car for 30,000 miles over the
past two years and the problems are solved and there are no new problems
(knock on wood). The engine consumes very little oil now. I use Mobil 1 and
might only need to top it off once or twice by a small amount between
regular oil changes. I typically have the oil and filter changed when the
Driver Information Console tells me to.

Did this fix your oil consumption issue? I have an 05 that likes its oil
but I am 99% sure its being sucked through the PCV system and not slipping
past the rings or seats. The accepted fix seems to be installing catch
cans on the PCV system but I am looking for a more novel approach.

Engine could have been out from the top without the subframe and half of
the other crap being removed. Thing is the rods if.they are bad prob
wore.the shaft too so it wont matter if they put new rods in. this
mechanics at gm on mack in detroit have no idea how to get a wheel aligment
right. I hope its not the case with your dealer

Question, so you’re telling me that even if the car is out of warranty by
age, but not by miles, gm is still subject to pay for the labor done on the
car if something goes wrong on it??

android23able says:

Oh ok, got ya. So pretty much you got super lucky right there huh, that’s
great.!! 🙂
Anyway, I was just making sure I didn’t pay if I did not have to. I have a
07 cts 72 k on it, have had it for about a year now, and recently started
leaking antifreez. Anyway thanks for the info, greatly appreciated.

How much did that job run you i have a 03 with 45k miles and its leaking
oil

The good news is for certain years of the cts they will cover a replacement
chains for free

Had an ’05 with the same problem. Dealer claimed it was normal, but I got
tired of topping off with expensive synthetic oil every week and constantly
worrying when the engine will cease. To cut my losses, traded it in two
years ago with fewer than 67,000 miles. Of course I took a huge
depreciation hit – just under $30k over 6 years. Aside from mechanical
problems (engine, water pump, rear differential, battery drain), it was a
great looking and driving car.

I have a 2005 with the same oil consumption problem. How much did the cost?
Did it solve the problem?
