Bob Robinson says:

This video was a big help. Specially in fining what was inside the door
that I could not see or feel. I did put button rod on first and fished a
wire down to button rod. Duck tape it on and this guided back in and up
into place. I am a happy man because wife is happy because her car door is
fixed!

Nate Kaminskas says:

my lock was broken for 3 years – thanks for the great vid. It took me
about 45 minutes.

ronseeyore says:

Thanks for the video. Very helpful. The video shows trying to attach the
rod (5:54-6:32) through the hole. I attached the rod to the lock assembly
then put the assembly into the door, feeding the rod through the hole.
Also, I found the GM-OEM part through OEMcats.com; I chose one of the 37
listed sites and paid less than $120, total, to have the part shipped to my
door.

James Bender says:

The key step I think he missed is to test the actuator before assembling
it. Make sure it works correctly.

DeepN2Music says:

Great video, same for 2009 Impala, I was stuck on the door handle clip and
this helped. Do you have a part number for the actuator by any chance?

racerx1957 says:

It is very do-able. Sad that GM chooses to install inferior parts on their
cars. Sadder yet is the fact that they eliminate American jobs to
manufacture or purchase these inferior parts for much less money, but the
price of a GM car keeps going up. I guess they have to keep the prices up
there so that they can afford that 42% raise for their CEO.

racerx1957 says:

Are you sure the that you manually disengaged the door lock actuator either
by lifting the button inside or detaching it and doing it manually from
inside the door. When my actuators went bad all I had to do was reach in
and pull up the button and the doors would open without an issue. The doors
just would not unlock with the key FOB or by door switch. You must have a
deeper issue than I experienced.

jmedina521 says:

thanks alot bro, saved me alot of money and time!!!

racerx1957 says:

JB you are probably correct in that. Especially due to the fact the parts
were brand new factory GM parts, made in Mexico. Thanks for the suggestion.

fcracer hotrod says:

I looked up what buppa2001 mentioned about just changing the actuator. The
guy on the forum utilized a generic 12 volt actuator and with some
modifications to the door panel and a few extra holes in the door to attach
the actuator. Would take a little work if you wanted to try it. Myself I
would rather have the factory replacement and not some add on. It is a lot
cheaper for sure though. Google search, ” Malibu $8 door lock” for the
article and decide for yourself…

haleyeah83 says:

Nice!! Part number?

racerx1957 says:

Glad it helped. Hopefully the new ones last longer than the OE ones…

rich l says:

did anyone figure out how to manually release the door mechanism without
the interior or exterior door handle. neither of mine will open the door. I
have the door panel off and put penetrating oil all over hoping something
will move and the door will open. I ordered the parts and hoping the parts
will reveal a way to trigger the door to open. maybe an extra dollar in the
collection plate will help? Any words of wisdom folks?

Terrell Jones says:

Holy shit this is really a common problem?!?!?!? I thought I was just
unfortunate, my front driver AND rear driver is going out at the same time
smh

racerx1957 says:

Yes it is a very common problem. As are tire wear issues on these model
year Impalas. I took mine in for a front end alignment after replacing the
original tires, that were VERY unevenly warn. Even with being rotated every
2500 miles. Dealer mechanic comes out after about an hour and informs me
that he cant get the front end into spec without removing the struts and
oversizing the mounting holes with a die grinder, and yes this will cost me
an extra $200.00. Called GM, Normal maint. they tell me

Dan Clark says:

Great video. I will be replacing mine on a 2009 with less than 12,000
miles. Looks do-able.

racerx1957 says:

Good luck with that. May be able to remove the door panel with door closed
and somehow reach in and manually release the door latch..

buppa2001 says:

Thanks for the video, very helpful. Guys, do yourself a favor and google
for “Malibu 8 dollar door lock” and see the instructions on the Malibu
forum for using an aftermarket (eBay) door lock actuator. I just did the
same on my ’09 Impala and am thrilled (paid $10 for 2 actuators and was
probably easier to install than the OEM).

Willigl54 says:

The passenger side rear door actuator part number is 20790500 and the
driver side rear door actuator is 20790501, to the best of my knowledge,
you must verify these numbers before ordering. I had contacted GM Parts
Direct and found their initial price to be very good, when I got to the
point of ordering the part they wanted to tack on about 26% of the purchase
price for processing shipping and handling. I felt this is a deceptive way
to do business and told them so. I ordered the part from EBay

Willigl54 says:

After a few follow up tests I found that the door would not open from
either the inside or outside. I removed the inside panel with the door
closed and opened the door by pulling the outside lever manually. I believe
I had the shaft for the outside lever incorrectly positioned, after
reconnecting that the door works fine. Even though this was not an issue
for me, I would suggest that the child lock be set so that the door can be
opened from the inside before closing the door.

racerx1957 says:

Sorry for not replying faster. I just dont check this too often. As far as
a part number goes, I disgarded the boxes the parts came in so I cant give
you the actual part number. I purchased through GMpartsdirect on line. They
were the cheapest I found online. If you go to their site and put in your
vehicle information it is quite easy to find and order the part.
Unfortunately they do not list the actual GM part numbers on the site.
Sorry I couldn’t help you more…

Molon Labe says:

Your video easily helped cut my install time in half when replacing the
rear passenger side actuator on my mother’s 2009 Impala. Thanks again!

Tony Stanisch says:

Nice video, very informative, now I just got to figure out how to do this
with the door closed

Jeremiah Baker says:

Thx for vid same door on my 2008. Impala went out this should be a recall

Jeremiah Baker says:

Im having the same problem, my driver rear door does not work at all, and
my driver door started acting up recently! This should be a recall, this is
a safety issue because my son I can only get him out of one door atm.
Unbelievable that they wont recall this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

fcracer hotrod says:

At the time I did my 08 Impala, I could not find just the actuator alone
and had to replace the whole latch assembly. But I see there is a comment
below where someone was just able to replace the actuator at a lot less
expense. If you can do it, by all means go for it. I will have to look into
that and see if it is possible. Thanks

Erik Granse says:

Is it necessary to replace the entire latch assembly? In looking for parts,
I’m finding both full latch assemblies as well as separate actuators. The
latter are significantly less expensive. Is it possible to just replace the
actuator as a component of the latch?
