Today on this 2006 Buick Lucerne, were going to install part number C12044 in currant. All right, the first thing we need to do is go ahead and get our car ready. We need to lower the exhaust. Before we do that, well go ahead and use a strap to help hold our exhaust and support it while we undo the fasteners that are holding the exhaust in place. Well go ahead and remove the exhaust hanger bracket from the bottom of the frame rail. In this case, our vehicle was a dual exhaust. There is a bolt well have to remove for the hanger bracket, another one on each side. Now, well go towards the front of the exhaust a little bit, where weve got another set of hangers.
Well go ahead and spray these rubber hangers down with some lubricant, and then go ahead and push, pull, or pry as needed to remove them. With those hangers removed, well go ahead and use our strap to help lower our exhaust. On this vehicle, it has an automatic load level and control. We want to remove one the fasteners which secures the housing to the frame rail. This bolt will not be reused. Okay, with an extra set of hands, well go ahead and put the hitch up position.
Now, well temporarily go ahead and put the hitch up against the frame of the vehicle. Then, well end up having the trim below the load 00:01:10 control housing, as needed for our hitch. We use a bolt on one side to help hold up our drivers side. Then, on our passenger side, with the housing for a load level and control, well go ahead and put our hitch up against it. Well go ahead and trace around the hitch using a marker; then we know how much to trim out because we dont want any of that housing between the hitch and the frame. Lets go ahead and cut out where we need on our housing.
To do this were using a Dremel tool or cutting wheel. Well basically go ahead and follow our line. Well go ahead and cut it out. Now, our hardware well be using to install the hitch will be the 10mm bolt and a counter-tooth washer. When we install a counter-tooth washer, youll see that there are teeth on there, and those will always face towards the hitch.
In this case, theyll be going on the exhaust hanger bracket. Make sure you have the square hole of the bracket pointing towards the top of the hitch. Okay, with an extra set of hands, well go ahead and put the hitch up in position. As were doing this, well also go ahead and install a new hanger for our exhaust. Our new hanger will sit on the bottom of the hitch, and then our hardware will go through. Since our vehicle is dual exhaust, lets do the hangers on both sides. Thats the same location as the bolt we removed for our factory hangers. There we’re two bolts holding the hitch in place. Well go ahead and tighten those down just enough to snug the hitch up against the frame. Now, our two holes on the hitch going towards the front of the vehicle, we need to go ahead and drill those out into the frame. Well use the hitch to template to do that. First, well go ahead and use a smaller drill bit for a pilot hole, then well go back at it with a -inch drill bit. If you can, use a 17/32 drill bit, which is just slightly bigger than a inch, and you want to do this on both sides of the hitch. If our hole is drilled out, we can go ahead and install our hardware. The hardware were going to install will be a -inch carriage bolt thats about 1 and inches long, and a square block thats about 3 inches long, with a square hole in it. Now, we need to go ahead and fish-wire our hardware into place. Well use a bolt leader of a fish wire to go ahead and install our hardware. First off, well go ahead and run our bolt leader through the hole were going to use and then out the access hole. In this case, our access hole is on the side of the frame, so go ahead and run it out there. Well take a block and thread a bolt leader through it, and then pu
Is this safe to haul a 5×8 trailer? I mean this car has a 200HP engine but the brakes are not designed for that.
Appreciate video, installing one on my 2010 lucerne this weekend!!
Wish my Curt hitch came with instructions
