thanks man good to see people helping people again

Diane Bailey says:

I only need to replace the belt but cannot get it off. There is a bracket
connecting the engine to the body. Does this have to be removed to be able
to replace the belt or is there some other way to get the belt out and a
new one on?

SilkyTP says:

@roylwchez Thanks a ton man. I’m pretty good with a wrench, but have never
done an Intake Manifold nor a plenum so if that’s where the leak is, I’m
probably not going to do it. I have seen vids here that say that the LIM is
the most likely culprit, but in one case it was that lower elbow. So I’ll
try replacing that – at least see if that’s where it’s coming from first.
Very helpful, I’m truly grateful.

SilkyTP says:

I wish there were arrows or something in this video showing which bolts and
such he was talking about. This will NOT help me remove the tensioner
assembly. Sigh

dbradley3 says:

Thanks for putting this video together – have alternator going out on 97
Bonneville.

James B. Patrick says:

@roylwchez The same exact thing happened on my 96 Lesabre. The bearings in
the pulley went bad and tore itself apart. And when I when to take it off
the bolt was stripped out. Now I have to replace the whole assembly which
sucks.

Hannah Nelson says:

thank you i did it with your help, have a good day

royalwithcheese says:

@Jcal022 if the bolt spins then it is stripped sounds like to me sorry i am
no mechanic but sounds like the whole tensioner will need to go

joltonjerry says:

Thanks alot buddy ur info helped a lot with my situation

royalwithcheese says:

Ok I havent done that job myself but I think what you have to do it place a
jack with a wood block under the engine to take the pressure off of the
bracket un-bolt it and remove the belt its the only way its coming off. I
had mine done at a shop a few years ago google it there probably is a video
for that good luck to you

jjchargerboy16 says:

Um do you know whee I can find a new Water pump Pulley? I’m looking
everywhere!!! I cant believe no part store has them. I mean what the fuck?
Is that water pump pulley the only pulley for the 3.8 series 2 motor an
unchangeable part? Mines is deteriorating with rough top that is eating up
my belt, I just bought a nice strong $60 belt along with a almost $200 belt
tensioner assembly, and that pulley has to go.

royalwithcheese says:

sorry it took so long for me to respond a cheap and easy way is to take a
long screwdriver or piece of steel place on end on teh alternator and the
other close to your ear. if you hear the squeal through the vibration of
the metal then that is the bad part

royalwithcheese says:

@SilkyTP yes the alternator has to come out first the bottom bolt of the
alternator holds the back side of the teniosor in and yes the tube is cheap
like 5$ if you leaking coolant and you havent had a lower intake manifold
gasket done that is probably the issuse and will need to be done as well as
changing the upper intake plastic plenum there is a video for on an older
buick but its very similar to mine its in like 6 parts i had to get mine
done like 3 weeks ago

Jcal022 says:

Yea mine isn’t stuck when I try too put tension or loosen the bolt just
spins . So is it the pulley?

kayleaemmerson says:

can you fix my car now?

YaBuddyC says:

Hey thanks for the video. I looked things over and could tell it was
probably easy but it really gives some reassurance to have a step-by-step
visual guide… giving the correct sockets sizes definitely helps save
time. I only changed the alt(not tensioners) so this was perfect.

johnjacob36201 says:

first nice job dude

royalwithcheese says:

Welcome look for more videos coming in december. Going to do the ignition
switch next since I had to cut the wires under the dash and use a resistor
to wire it up

sebreece says:

thanks for the info

3cnino3 says:

You were mentioning that you thought your alternator might have been where
the noise was coming from? How can i be for sure which pulley its coming
from! my poor car is a “squeaky mess” 🙁

royalwithcheese says:

@Jcal022 i replaced the pulley on recommed of the autoparts store 15$
compared to 75$ make sure you get the plastic elbow too from if just the
pulley if its stuck then replace the whole thing the tensioner on this car
was replaced about 3 years ago it i helf tension so just the pulley was
done and a new elbow that was leaking

jjchargerboy16 says:

I got an 1997 Oldsmobile 88, same engine and all. I have to replace my
tensioner assembly. I’ll flush the radiator after its done. That bolt your
removing off of that pulley @1:59 is broken on my car. When I’m using a
breaker bar pushing it left to remove it, the bolt will not tighten it’ll
just keep turning so I can’t remove the belt. I just bought this stupid
tensioner cheapest on at auto zone. Its a real pain.

mojado15 says:

when you took the tensioner off was it lefty loosey?

royalwithcheese says:

@SilkyTP ok listen there are like 3 or 4 bolts you need to remove the
alternator thats one and 2 are on the front side thats it. its really not
that hard sorry i wasnt able to put in arrows if you have the new tensioner
then you can see which bolts need to come out

SilkyTP says:

@roylwchez Cool. I have to remove the tensioner assembly because I’m told
that there are plastic bypass tubes attached to it that may be the culprit
for my coolant leak (water pump and thermostat already replaced, still
leaking coolant). So basically, you’re saying get the alternator out and
then the tensioner assembly, right? I won’t be replacing the assembly, just
trying to get at those bypass tubes. Without a shop manual this is a blind
mans job, but I’ve gotta find the leak.

brendonMA999 says:

heres my tip to everyone, kill your shitty torqless, oil burning 3.8l v6
with FIRE!!!.

Jcal022 says:

why did u replace the pulley? my pulley doesnt loosen nor tighten anymore
not sure if i should replace the tensioner or just the pulley
