Before they had the plastic ones, they had ones with metal housings that
weren’t any better. The entire engine has aluminum bolts to save weight.
They designed it with an electric pump to better control the flow of the
coolant and keep the drag off of the engine. Doesn’t seem like much, but
with it electrically controlled, and not having to drag down the engine all
of the time, they save a little fuel and make more power. It is true that
the pumps don’t last long…I wish the company that was subbed out to build
the pumps (I believe it was Bosch, but can’t remember exactly) did a better
job. I used to be a dealership technician and I replaced a lot of these.
That particular model (E70 X5) is a little harder to replace the pump on,
but the job can be done in under 2 hours.
Or like on the 528i with a belt driven pump that has a plastic impeller.
Engineers are idiots. The plastic impeller breaks but the pulley still
spins just fine given no indication of a bad pump. Also has a secondary
electric pump that’s messes with you because at idles it runs just enough
to keep the engine from overheating. Engineers suck…………had to
eventually do head gaskets on this one because of them. Talk about a
learning experience. Engine also had variable valve timing and required
special tools to put back in time. Good and bad

Im going thru a problem with a jaguar having no heat.I’ve replaced the
water pump the thermostat and still no heat.found it another pump that’s
electric. Just gotta find it
Just because it is NEW and more MODERN doesn’t mean it is better. This is a
great example of over-engineering.

I prefer and I drive a 90 325is solid car no electronic gumbo stuff and
easy to work on

Screw BMWs they are just status symbols. They can design them this way
because 90% of people who buy them probably don’t even know what a wrench
is!
I like BMW for the way they drive. However, the new generation BMWs are all
designed to be obsolete in 5 years, if not sooner. How in the world they
can have transmission fluid as lifetime and doesn’t need replacing is
beyond me. I used to have an E30 that lasted me over 1/2 million miles on
the original unopened engine. All I did was change fluids, engine oil, and
replace brake pads and it runs forever. The parts were all metal and it was
a joy to drive and service. I read just the other day on a Bimmer forum on
how they toute and praise German engineering as everything over-engineered.
Typically stupid and unrealistic, clueless weekend wannabee mechanics that
doesn’t know better. Now when I work on my E90, I always cuss and curse
when I encounter problems because of their stupid design. Imagine designing
a 45K + car that will only last 5 years because you just cannot work on it.
Well I’m just clueless as to how in the world they can become successful in
its line of cars. I guess people as still hung up on its
reputation…..”Vee know vhat vee are doing. Our carz are build vely

i agree auto manufactures make it to where you have to take it the repair
and make big hole in your wallet . on my 1997 pontiac grand prix gt 3800 V6
which is a good engine the temp sensor for the computer is right next to
the exhaust cross over pipe so you have remove the engine mount and a bunch
of other stuff to get the sensor off which alot of old cars that i worked
on there’s really nothing in your way. so why did they do this because they
want more money out of you $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.also i was changing the water
on the 1999 pontiac grand am 2.4 twin cam engine its was a pain thee ass to
get out because you have to remove the timing chain and the exhaust
manifold this was the only car that took me 18 hrs to fix and 4 hrs to put
every thing back together thanks to the dumb ass engineers that built this
piece of shit and thank god that it gets good gas mileage or i would have
scrapped a long time ago.
Scotty I know you rag on Mercedes but c’mon! BMWs are not only inferior
cars to begin with but they do screwy stuff like this
Anyone thats ever owned a German car for any period of time where the car
would have some age….will certainly hate German cars. I’ve never seen
cars that were so overrated yet so inferior in design. I am not joking,
they are some of the most unreliable pieces of shit you can over pay for.
They will constantly breakdown…you’ll find yourself having the same
repairs done and paying through the nose. Yet these Kraut companies will
act as though the unnecessary complexities and costly repairs of their
design are a hallmark of fine engineering.
I will say this though, they do have some of the best driving
dynamics…handling and etc…but their mechanical and electrical
components are stupidly designed. They should just build their chassis and
outsource their engines and transmissions to foreign companies.
BMW = Big Money Waste
They only warranty their car for 4 years or 50K miles. So the work they do
cover, they stretch the maintenance schedule so that they don’t have to do
it. For example, 150K miles for oil change. Lifetime transmission oil that
even ZF and GM said you should replace very 30K miles. Differential oil
that never needs to be replaced because they even eliminated a drain plug.
You check the oil electronically because there is no dipstick for the
engine or transmission, and quite often these electronics work quite
unreliably. Yeah, that German over-engineering for you.
BMW X series, in general, are overpriced turds and their owners deserve
those price tags.
I say let the “status people” buy this cars scotty, the more they break,
more business for us, Lets not bash the engineers for designing the pump
this way …..mechanical pumps do last longer, but you have to deal with
taking off all the accessories belts, motor timing belt. its the not the
designer engineers fault. its the ‘Status people” lack of maintenance, they
drive this cars to the ground. The only liquid they put in the car is FUEL
hmm, e46 models use all metal. thats silly to make that out of plastic!!!
Magnesium can be pretty strong if done right. Professional DSLR cameras has
a magnesium alloy body, and you can drop them on the asphalt and step on
them, drive them over with a car and so on.
But I’m sure these magnesium screws are mostly there for BMW to make even
more money so they can sell you new bolts each time. If it was my car I’d
replace them with something that I can use over. Even though I’d be more
likely to sell the car.

I dont think I will ever buy these newer bmw’s. The best bmw’s ever made
are the e23, e24, e28, and e30. These cars are built solid and are easier

Well, let me first say i love your channel, as to the electric pump, it.’s
plastic to save weight, and it is electric so it can be turned off when not
needed and thus does not create unnesecary drag on the engine. Full
disclosure, i own a 12 year old bmw and it has never given me any
headaches. I once talked to a headgasket manufacturer and he told me bmw
has an acceptable failure rate of 0.05 while chrysler’s where from 2-3%
this extra overhead makes the parts expensive.
Where are you getting these outrageous prices for parts? Its a 380$
part….I will say they look like there getting worse to work on. haha. I
did a full cooling system overhaul on my 03 3 series in 3 hours. Atleast
the electric one tells you its bad instead of grenading your cooling fan
into the radiator…..

What was the milage on the car?
Scotty, liked your video and loved the humor. Unfortunately I had to find
your video because my X5 is in the shop and I dread it is a water pump
issue. The blower came on as soon as I started the car last couple of days
and today it gave off a warning of overheated engine on the freeway.
I do agree that in the name of efficiency car companies are sacrificing
reliability. Everything is going lightweight (magnesium) and electronic to
eke out that 1-2% more efficiency, but unfortunately the impact is directly
on out wallets. I have to say I still love how the BMWs drive (and I have
had a Honda before), but the way their reliability is going down they will
have to give lifetime warranties on these things else people will stop
buying them. Hmm., hasn’t that happened to BMW before?
WOW ONLY 60K ANF THE WATER PUMP CRAPPED OUT ALREADY!!!! I was about to buy
a bmw 7 series last year but quickly changed thoughts
What was found is that the pumps actually don’t go bad…. what happens is
there is a capacitor on the back of the pump that shakes loose, because of
the heat of the engine it isn’t able to be soldered on, and there is a
little snap mechanism. So you pop the pump out, pop the back cover off push
the capacitor back and bam. Working pump. Saves the cost of a new pump.
There are benefits to an electrical pump, but overall, just way to over
engineered.
Hi Scotty a friend of mine had a BMW a couple of years ago
He took it in two BMW for a routine service and they charge him £8/12usd to
top is water bottle up what’s that all about £££££$$$
driving BMW is really pleasure but they do this kind of things because they
want you pay several times for that pleasure
Hey Scotty, love your video. Looks almost like an e70. so I have an e70
with 78k mi and it has this electric pump, question is should I replace it
now or drive it till it fails which will leave me stranded somewhere. It’s
not on my service manual to replace it until maybe 100k
i do not like modern technology in some cases, for example: no oil dipstick
on transmission or engine, no drain plugs on transmission or differential..
electronic activated 4×4 that fails all the time, and talking about bumpers
and interior they dont use bolts or screws anymore only cheap plastic clips
..
Outrageous! Im glad that I stick with my old Saab 900, waterpump
replacement takes maximum of 30 minutes!
