My BMW Feels So Different With This!

My BMW Feels So Different With This!

In this video I install a double shear selector rod on my manual BMW E90 335i. This upgrade takes some of the numbness out of the stock shifter.

I show you how to install it and give you my review. I also refresh my shifter bushings in the video and show you what’s involved with replenishing the stock bushings.

There are two versions of the billet selector rod. The short rod is for E9X and E8X cars with production dates up to 12/2008. The long rod is for cars produced from 01/2009 onwards. This is for the 135i and 335i.

Does this work for F22?

Nikola Tesla says:

Hey I think you moved on from this, but It's typical for a lot of these cars. THE [SIDE to SIDE] SLOP COMES FROM WEAR TO THE MOLDED BALL THAT IS PART OF THE SHIFT LEVER. You can fix minimal amounts of wear replacing all the parts you did, but the PRIMARY CULPRIT of the PRIMARY SLOP is the ROUND BALL – Look carefully! you will see that it is indeed NOT ROUND anymore and has wear marks on the sides from forward and backward movement, which in turn creates side to side play. It won't matter if you replace all the bushings, it will fill SLIGHTLY tighter like yours did, but it will DECREASE forward to back play which in turn makes you feel the "gates" locking better.

Greg Wayne says:

Well i hope you like it. But personally I just get the Ebay $20 shifters grind down the plastic if needed on the "C" clip area and it solves the whole thing!! Short shift and notchy as heck burgers!

Hajzer says:

Can we buy same thing to e46 ?

Freemaysin says:

Did you ever figure out how to remove/reduce that side to side slop in neutral/gear?

Neko says:

What type of grease did you use on the pivot ball? Thanks.

Tyler w says:

Anyone that did this upgrade notice a difference? Just observing I think that shifter linkage is the same thing the RTD shifter uses.

Hello ! You have a link for the short rod on a 1serie E87 please ?

How is the shift from 1st to 2nd?.. mine feels a bit notchy..

Mike Ormond says:

Detention pins stop side slop

Dave Shiroma says:

The problem is you’re shifting wrong. The springs will automatically select the gear of you just “angle” towards them. You grab the shifter by the top, not the side. Top of the shifter in the center of your palm, fingers to pull, “heel” of the palm pushes. Down and back, diagonal up, straight back, diagonal up, back slightly to the right. You should be able to shift without looking in one smooth motion. No “gating”. Hope that helps. Try this with the car off and eyes closed.

Hell of a lot of work for such a small gain

D Elv says:

Poly bushes and new shifter and linkage will tighten things right up

SnowSlide91 says:

What about the shifting arm/bracket that the shift lever goes into? There are 3 bushings in total holding that bracket, do you think they could be the cause for the remaining side-to-side play?
