hi, I have a 1 series from 2008 and I can’t find this key cover..it means
my key have a rechargeable battery inside?

makonja says:

I have the same looking key, but it looks like its made from one peace of
plastic. I dont have this little cover for replacing the battery. any
ideas?

AskTheCarExperts says:

Only on keys that do not have a replaceable battery. If you see the cut out
then the battery would need replacement. On E46 however the battery is
charged while in the ignition 🙂

What about my smart key, that have a battery I it’s not replaceable?

Alma Hessel says:

I have a similar key problem as your video. My 530i will start although the
key doesn’t go in completely. Once I start the car, I place my keys on the
seat. Any idea how to fix this?

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello Denis, Thank you for the great comment 🙂

julina2303 says:

Hi there, thanks for the great video! i have a question though… as
“makonja” mentioned, i also have the same key that is just one piece of
plastic. i read your response and you mentioned it is not replaceable. I
have been overseas for 3 weeks (i had my family friend run my car once) and
have just come back. i started my car yesterday and the battery symbol with
a key over it appeared. Any ideas on what I do since you mention the
battery is non replaceable? shall i take my car to BMW? Thanks 🙂

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello, That is a good question 🙂 I believe that this will be the square
key with the slot in 2007 unless it was an early production vehicle. I have
to admit I never paid much attention to the date change 🙂 Both keys have
remote functions even with the blade style.

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello Tommaso, The usual fix is to have the key replaced unfortunately if
the battery has failed. If you have a second key you can pry open the bad
key and replace the battery but sometimes this can damage the transponder
chip resulting in a non functional key. So you will have to way your
options if it is worth attempting.

capitolwireless says:

THANKS YOU VERY MUCH!

Amir Tufekcic says:

Man, I had a completely same issue a few weeks ago. And NO, you don’t have
to get the remote key replaced – just take it to the nearest electronics
repair shop @ your town and tell them which button doesn’t work so they can
replace bad micro switch on it. After replacing key shall work just fine.
Cheers!

makonja says:

Tnx. My problem is that buttons on my remotes are not working. The car
starts normaly when I insert the key, but I am unable to unlock/lock the
car by pressing buttons. I have 2 keys and both stoped working in the same
time. Cant remember if car lost power from the battery in that time. I
guess I would need to check fuse box?

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello Julina, The key is made to charge in the key holder. If you take a
long drive it may be enough to charge the key. Also if you go to the BMW
service center they can charge your key in the tool called a key reader.
Most BMW shops do not even know that they can do this so you may have to
let them know. The key reader acts like a charger so they only need keep
the key in the key reader for a few hours to charge it up. If the warning
comes on again the only fix is to replace the key.

Preacher gurbetci says:

Hi there i have key problems with my e60 2007 facelift. It is the same key
with yours but without comfort option. Now the problem is tha the remote of
my keys won’t work i can not unlock or lock the car with my remote i must
do this manual the problem has occured suddenly, but if i take the fuses
all of them off and put it back it wil works for a moment lets say 2 or 3
days and than agian the same problem. Can you give me advise pls. Kindly
regards. Sorry for my english i am from Belgium.

AskTheCarExperts says:

Any key that does not have a cover does not have a replaceable battery. It
would be a rechargeable battery that is charged while in the key slot. Any
comfort access key would have an external battery. Even the non replaceable
battery can be replaced by prying open the key but there is a risk of
damage to the transponder chip and then the vehicle will not start.

AskTheCarExperts says:

Thanks for watching 🙂 and the great comment!

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello Alma, This is a problem with the key slot holder. The key is being
read out when you hold it in place to allow the vehicle to start. Once the
start signal is read then even if no key is inserted the vehicle will run.
You will need to replace the key holder to fix this problem.

Denis Brunk says:

Very good!! thank you very much!

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello, Make sure you have the key with the replaceable battery by checking
for the cut out. Then remove the mechanical key. Under the mechanical key
portion is a small cut out. Using a pick or small screw driver twist
slightly to pop the cover off. Let me know how it goes 🙂

AskTheCarExperts says:

If you use a specialty shop that works on BMW’s you can have some service
done but for most things the dealer is the way to go. The cost is more but
in most cases the techs are more skilled and have the right tools for the
job. So you know, the dealer can offer you two years warranty on parts and
labor on any replaced item you purchase regardless of mileage. But for oil
changes, brakes, or regular maintenance another shop should be able to do
these repairs.

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello, This is a strange problem. I have not heard of this type of
situation. If it is occuring with both keys then I would think the problem
is with the vehicle. I would suspect the diversity antenna might be the
next step.

winston0079 says:

o wow i tough this was self charging system

AskTheCarExperts says:

You are very welcome 🙂

julina2303 says:

Thanks for the reply 🙂 i’ll definitely take your advice into consideration
and find a speciality shop for normal things like oil changes etc. Cheers
again

I have a question. I’m looking at a 2007 328i coupe with premium and sports
package. What kind of key do k get? A traditional blade or a remote….it
doesn’t have comfort access

MetalMulishaX27 says:

Julina, I have a 2002 BMW 325i key fob that I just changed the battery on.
It was a PAIN! I don’t think BMW meant for these batteries to be replaced,
but the one I used was a Panasonic V2020. I found the video here on
YouTube. I had to splice the sides with a utility knife (took about 20
minutes, it’s thick plastic!) and then went to Batteries Plus where they
special-ordered the battery. Costs about $15.00. The associate removed the
old battery and soldered my new one in… (cont…)

Yanni Papadopoulos says:

our dealer told us the same thing, $500 aus to order new keys from germany.
did you have any problems after replacing the battery? we are going to do
the same thing and DIY

AskTheCarExperts says:

The key you have would be non comfort access. The battery in that key is
not replacable. If you have another key you can try to open up the key to
relace the internal battery but at times this can result in the key no
longer allowing the vehicle to start. What symptoms do you have? Doors not
unlocking or no start?

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello, This sounds like a bad key button. The only fix is replacement. On
this vehicle simply putting the key into the slot initializes the key so no
button pressing would be needed.

julina2303 says:

P.S… I just asked a question about the key battery… but was also
wondering your thoughts on taking BMWs to non-bmw mechanics to get it
serviced etc. I’ve only ever taken my car to BMW because I am worried other
mechanics don’t have the technology to properly service the car. However it
isn’t cheap so I am wondering if going to a non-bmw mechanic would still be
sufficient. Thanks again 🙂

Hashem Alesayi says:

hiii there i like your video can i ask you ? i have a problem with the a/c
whenever i drive behind a smoking car the smell of this car come in ? even
when the inside air button is on ? i think i have issue with the air gate

AskTheCarExperts says:

Nice! That is great info!

AskTheCarExperts says:

Definately check the fuses. This might be fuse 56 and 57. I have a video on
this problem as well 🙂

Gavner says:

Hi mate, I have a 2007 530xd (non comfort fob key), and i have a strange
error. One of my key is working correctly, while the one i use works
properly too, except door lock key. It started to malfunction rarely, now
it never works. All other functions are good, door opening, trunk opening,
engine starting etc, only the closing function seems dead. I tried to
initialize many ways, (lock doors, start, remove key, hold open while
pushing lock 3 times etc.) how to initalize it properly?

TinTinTubbs says:

thankyou, bmw told my wife she would need to buy a new key 275 euro, got it
working thanks to your video
