How to Install Garmin Zumo XT on a BMW GS (factory wiring)

How to install a Garmin Zumo XT on your BMW GS using the factory wiring plug. The BMW Navigator (nav) – even the nav V and nav VI – are out of date and prone to issues. The Zumo XT is the best motorcycle GPS ever, and allows off road routing. Here’s how to install it in place of the factory GPS. No wire splices here.

Repair plug to connect gps wires into factory gps plug: (should work on most BMW’s but check your parts diagrams):

Chris Yetter says:

Thanks for the Video. You saved me hours of research.

courtney dupuy says:

Why did you need the garmin power adaptor, the bmw accesory plug that you connected to already has only 5v?

Hidring hrvatska says:

Hy from Croatia , van You tell me ,do i have navi conection Jack on My motorcycle , i dont have BMW navigation, i bought just rail and spare Jack for original navi conection ..
My problem is , can not find where to plug in im motorcycle …many thnx

Ray Friedman says:

Ian, I'm ready to ditch my BMW Cradle and Connected mis-navigation app! Do you still recommend this setup now that a year has past since you uploaded it? Is there anything better available today?

Peter Whitmore says:

HI Ian, thanks for another informative video. I took your advice and bought a 2017 R2000 GSA which I pick up next Saturday. I have removed the Zumo XT from my Africa Twin so this video is very timely. I am looking at buying a BMW Nav 5 to put in the 'hole' but might now use my Zumo as you have done. Do you know if the BMW repair plug varies from model to model, i.e would the same plug fit my non TFT setup? Thanks again.

Peter G says:

Hi Ian- Thank you for sharing out this video. I just purchased a R 1250 GSA and installed a Zumo XT following your steps.

MultiEmoto says:

At the end of the video when you were wrapping up, it appeared as though your wonder-wheel was on the throttle side of the bike. Did you move it? What's the story there?

NeuroticLobster says:

Thanks for clearly showing the BMW part number for that pigtail, made it super easy to order from the dealer! Got a Black Friday deal on the Zumo XT and locking Touratech mount today!

Daniel Ovalle says:

Best solution, 3DAM from Italy

Ed says:

dont even have my F750 GS YET, but have the latest Garmin motorcycle unit saved on amazon, half the price of the BMW, this is way I want mine mounted but will need to find the Bar for mounting…good video!

Lukas Formanek says:

Hi Ian, thanks for your stuff, great info source 🙂
Do you have a video comparing Zumo xt and BMW nav vi? I heard you talking about it but i cant find any yet. Thanks. 🙂

Daryl Clark says:

Ian, regarding the BUTT CONNECTORS – there are BUTT CONNECTORS that use HEAT SHRINK – seal out moisture; I was not sure if you used those or not in your video.

steve ricci says:

Sorry its a controller, not wonder wheel. The video was excellent cause this is the information I was looking for. Thank you

Dougie Quick says:

Crimp connectors seriously are an inferior connection and something as a career electrician involved with just a lot of different things from low vold dc to much higher AC stuff I have seen so many crimp connectors fail …for one thing in most applications it is stranded wire which so easily can work loose….at the very least twist the strands tight first or tin with solder ….but if doing that why not just solder the connections and insulate with shrink tubing which will then NEVER fail under any normal conditions. I had a pre owned 15k milr bike the previous owner had wired in all sorts of things with quality wire and brand name crimp connectors but one after another they were coming loose and losing connection ….with low volt direct current especially this is apt to occur over time with vibration and temp changes on top or having been too casual an install to begin with crimping procedure …I hate em for automotive type stuff especially unless short term non critical
