Henry J Anderson II says:

Flowing the GPU is not worth it. Chances are, the GPU has already been
fried, as it’s coupled with an AMD CPU, and since AMD’s were known, and
still are known to run hot, there was not enough air to be pushed across
the GPU. Sadly enough, you need to buy a new Motherboard. Whoever came up
with the idea of “reflowing” is an idiot. No such thing exists. Do you do
this on a desktop GPU? No, you simply replace the card. You have to do
the same with the motherboard in a laptop. If the GPU is fried, you
replace the MB… no reflowing… As for testing the memory slot,
sometimes that works, most of the time it doesn’t. Keep in mind, the slot
on the bottom (socket 0) MUST have a memory card in it, else the PC won’t
show you anything. In this case, sounds to me like you have mismatched ram
for the PC (most people did when trying to put 3 gigs in their machine,
especially with DDR and DDR2 memory), and the easiest way to check this is
run MEMTEST. If the bios sees the 3 gigs, then MEMTEST can look into it
further. Other than that, good video for starting out checking the GPU as
the culprit, just remember that you can also run MEMTEST on each memory
stick in socket 0. Make sure timing is the same, don’t run memory that is
333 and 667 together, or your only running the bus at 333. System only
runs as fast as the slowest component. Good luck to you all…

I want to thank you for your video. Your directions on troubleshooting the
RAM chips, helped me diagnose what was keeping my Laptop screen from
working. Mine is a Gateway M305CRV Laptop that had screen not working. But
when I watched your video and did what you instructed to remove one of the
RAM sticks & reinstall the battery & turn the laptop back on.. my screen
came back on after I rebooted it. So all my computer needs is to have one
of the RAM sticks replaced. Thankyou

Yan V says:

William, your video was going great until you got into topics regarding
GPU, and Motherboard. You quickly moved on into heating up the GPU and
stuff like that. It is not wise to go into this discussion without saying
exactly HOW and WHY this is done. You did say that it is done to re-solder
the bad connections, but it would be nice if you spoke a little more on
that.

It is very important to mention the methods. Heat gun or the kitchen oven?
The preparation… Remove the CMOS battery.. or it will explode… Also,
for some laptops it may be advisable not to bother at all, because some
laptops are very, very difficult to disassemble, and even more difficult to
put back together.

For some motherboards replacing the motherboard may be not cost efficient.
It may be better to just buy a new laptop if it costs like $150 to replace
the mobo.

I understand you cant discuss everything in one video, that’s why its best
not to go into the reflowing topics at all in this video and do a separate
one on that.

Thanks for this video! My problem was not faulty ram, but it was somehow
loose or dirty. I just removed it and put back and now the blank screen
problem is gone.

rahul singh says:

Ive got a strange problem. Ive to incline my laptop screen to 30 degree in
order to get the screen working, else it boots up with blank screen. What
do you think might be the problem ? Is it some some loose connection? If
yes then where probably ?

Thank you so much! I almost had a mental break down because my screen
wouldn’t turn on. I was scared to open the back of the computer, but after
how easy it was to take out the RAM stick, I gave it a try, and it worked!

LizziesMusic1991 says:

I have a laptop that will switch on and charge but the screen is blank my
friend who works with computers couldn’t fix it either and I was wondering
if I were to connect my computer monitor to my laptop would the blank
screen on the laptop show the laptop screen on the computer monitor or
would it still be blank?

alernito says:

First of all thanks.

I tried the test you display, I had image but no backlight, so I ordered an
lcd inverter and replaced it. Unfortunately it wasn’t solved, it has
exactly the same problem. It is intermitent: Sometimes I start the
computer (HP Pavilion dv2000) and the screen is illuminated, sometimes it
isn’t. After some tries (putting it to sleep mode and then on again) it
works (I am writing on it right now, but I am afraid of ruining altogether).

Do you think it is still the screen? There is always image, only sometimes
with no light.

Hanh Nguyen says:

William, My son’s Samsung laptop (NP300E5C) has the same issues described.
I have done everything you demonstrated to fix the problem but to no
avail. I have changed out new RAM, performed ESD, etc without any success.
Some observations during this troubleshooting. I noticed that the HDD
light only blinks for a few seconds during power up. I suspect that it is
the motherboard. The laptop is fairly new and seldom used by my son. Is it
possible for the virus to cause this problem. He did play online gaming on
this machine in the past. Thanks in advance.

TheFactsX says:

Hey William I have no idea if you are going to read this or even respond.
But I have a U56E Asus tek laptop and when I turn it on everything works
except for the screen which is black BUT when I connect it to a monitor I
can use my laptop since it works on a monitor does that mean my back light
is dead and needed to be replaced/or replaced screen?

Andy Ings says:

This video saved a laptop I was given. Troubleshooting the RAM I removed
one and the screen came on. I switched them round and again the screen came
on. I replaced both ram and it still worked. So simply following the steps
up until and including trouble shooting the RAM allowed me to use the
laptop again. It seems both slots work fine and both RAM work fine so
although it’s fixed the problem, it is still a mystery to me as to why it
stopped working in the first place. Great video though, thanks for the
help!

leonidas samouladas says:

O man i hope you will see and reply this, because im about to travel and my
old (7-8 yo) HP dv6 is acting out:

The laptops monitor is not displaying anything.
It stays “grey screen” (so i assume the backlight is ok).
It is booting and if i plug it on a external monitor (VGA or HTMI) its as
normal (does that mean that ram, GPU and motherboard is ok?) Rams has two
identical ones on two ports.

for the past 6 months i was using only an external monitor since it was
bigger. I actualy setted the external monitor as primary and left the
laptops one off (“black”) it used to display the logo and the BIOS options
at the booting but not for a couple of weeks now or a bit longer
now im moving to another country and i need it to work plus it has my
master thesis in it (yea i know i can still use the external monitor and
get it in a stick it but i need to work on it)
