Hard to Start E90 BMW? Cranking for long? Potential Fix (Fuel Pump Control Module Replacement)

In this video I show you how to upgrade from a second generation EKPM2 fuel pump control module to an EKPM3 third generation module. This is a potential cause for extra long cranks during startup.

I do this on my 2008 BMW 335i but this would apply to any E90 and also other BMW models. You’ll find your LPFP or low pressure fuel pump does not prime as expected when unlocking your car or opening your door.

The EKPM3 modules shipped from the factory on LCI (2009+) cars and a number of issues are addressed in this revision. I get inside and compare the two in this video.

I also show you how to remove your non folding rear seats.

hi i found a replacement module that is the same EKPM3. However, its number is 7229173 which is different than the original i pulled out which is 7276046. The replacement came from a 2011 BMW 328i xdrive, while the original 7276046 came from my daughters 2010 BMW 328i xdrive. I heard you say something about having to download the software if the number differs from the original 7276046. Can you or anyone help explain if this is needed and how to do that? I will be using NCS Expert, but am still watching videos on how to code the module using NCS Expert. Many thanks in advance if anyone or the author can help me.

So where do I get the file to load once I move over to NCS expert

I thought my smoke detector went off

Scott D says:

I had the same symptoms of a long start. The problem was with the crank position sensor. Upon arriving at the sensor, it was found that the wire to the sensor was eaten by a rat. $600 for some tape and a new sensor. The car is parked on the streets of NYC.

Great videos. I've watched quite a few and am subbed. I noticed you used a phrase and commented on the idea (as I think most of us do with cars) "Can I keep it on the road long enough and make it worth it?" This is something we usually start out thinking and trying to figure out but then when we get bored of the old car we give in and just buy that new "Other" car we've been wanting. But the facts are with these cars is it's always worth it to keep the 335i 340i, 135i, 240i, 235i, etc series cars as they are way cheaper to fix and run as well as give us all the big power we crave at a fraction of the cost of monthly payments or even an all out purchase of a new car. At say $1000.00 a moth or more for a new one it's way cheaper to keep the old one and they are so amazing at not rusting. Even in some of the salty areas of the world. We buy new ones for the fun of it and the excitement of the "New Car". LOL.

Nathan Evangelista says:

Do i need to code it if i go from the second gen to 3rd or will it work

Doinit Live says:

Did you experience white smoke coming out of the exhaust when you were having problem?

LUX LIFE says:

Hey bro. Great video. Just wondered… In the NCS expert which profile is closest chassis number to the E82 coupe Diesel? Would appreciate your help. Thank you.

I thought that there is a check valve inside the HPFP that keeps fuel pressure in the rail and that's what is "primed"?

Ruben Robles says:

Had a question regarding this issue?

MsportMax says:

I have the same issue, can it still be driven? Because I won’t get mine for a week and I need my car 🙁

ricardo verde says:

Question. If this part completely dies, will it get to a point where your car will not start? I had the same intermittent issue of rough starts and now my car won’t start at all. I have a E87 N43 116i 2010

ricardo verde says:

If i swap this part, do i have to code anything first? If so how?

Intellect Motosport says:

Where did you find it for 40$

That DUDE says:

So, I'm wondering what Software tool you're using to read your car and to code it! I want to DL that to my laptop and start looking at these codes. What do you recommend?

Beemertingz says:

Hi I'm wondering if you can help me out. Somtimes I have issues starting the car but my breaks are also rock hard. Typically only happens in the AM after the car is sitting overnight. Normally only on the first cold start. Any idea what it could be?

ben ten says:

My engine turn over but died. This happens after I pulled out fuel fuse to do oil prime.
