Hello, This does sound like FSU. This is common on the E53 X5.

Lorenc Zheku says:

nr 9 air blows in my legs and even more when i turn of the system sometimes
it blows air….plz help me cause FSU this problem and even more does it
discharges car’s battery? help me..thnx

AskTheCarExperts says:

Make sure you removed the hidden screws inside the glove box toward the
bottom. It will only come free once all the screws are removed.

Staphon Petty says:

im having trouble removing the glove box ive got the panel under it in the
video off but not glove box,please help.2003 x5 4.6is

Vanessa Vasquez says:

Thank you so much just saved me time and money.

ihsnshaik says:

Hey where does it say this? I want to get this done from the dealer because
i got this done maybe a year ago and it failed again. I don’t want to argue
with the dealer and they might say its not even this but the same symptoms
occurred. Let me know where you got this information.

drtomr1 says:

Thank you for the video. It made the job very easy. Unfortunately, it
didn’t help my blower. It still doesn’t work. Am I in need of the dealer at
this point? I don’t want to tackle the dashboard removal outlined in the
Bentley manual I have. I’m sure I could do it but I’m sure there are way
too many little things that I could mess up also.

stuntboyuk says:

I have to ask where can i buy a oem FSU from i am in the uk and i can not
seem to get one of line. 🙁 any help thanks

Versurna Phonasa says:

thanks bro! really help we were going to buy a new blower motor resister
but the problem was the wires were kinda loose push it back in and it worked

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello, Thanks for the comment and the great question. Yes I have seen a bad
final stage cause the fan to stay on and drain the battery. It is a common
cause of parasitic draws for this vehicle. Pulling the fuse was a smart
move 🙂 The FSU should fix the situation for you.

2pradereno says:

I went as far as removing the glove box and couldn’t see it. but I did see
the set of wires going to that direction. So, I will try that again. Thank
you

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello, Double check fuses 34, 48, and especially fuse 64 which is a 50 amp
fuse. If this has failed the final stage will not power the blower motor.
If all this checks out then the blower is the most likely failure. The
dealer or specialty BMW shop would then be a good idea as the dash removal
can be difficult. I am sorry to hear the final stage did not work.
Hopefully there is a bad fuse 🙂

beeker1017 says:

The video was easy to understand! Thank you! Also thank you percivia1369, I
did the same thing you did(pushed the connector in, it was loose), and it
worked! Again, thank you to everyone!!!

Fitz Michael says:

Stay away from aftermarket FSU they don’t last maybe 2 months max life. Buy
the OEM it comes with 2 yr warranty.

AskTheCarExperts says:

🙂 Let me know the results 🙂

AskTheCarExperts says:

@percival369 I am glad the video helped. Nice find with the loose pins!

I’ve got a 2002 X5 3.0 and have had AC issues since I purchased it in 2004.
At times, although more frequently now, no matter what blower speed is
selected or direction, no cold air comes out of the vents. Is this the FSU
or something else?

Bill Reilly says:

Thanks a whole lot for this info, I’ve had my 02′ X5 in two shops and the
battery replaced nobody could find the drain on the battery, putting in the
new FSU solved the problem instantly. Now the vehicle (falls asleep) with no
dead battery problems,thanks again!

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello, With the noise added to the symptom it sounds more like the blower
motor than the FSU however the FSU is much more common of a failure. I
would recommend starting with an FSU first due to this being the most
common failure as it would be a good idea to replace the unit with a new
fan if needed if the FSU does not do the trick. You can also jump the fan
power and ground to see if it turns on. This would prove the failure to be
the FSU.

JLXPRO says:

The dealer said the blower needed replaced as well, I watched this video
and just ordered the Final stage. It was $60 and I did it myself in 20 min.
Thanks so much for putting this video up. My air/heat and blower are all
working perfect now. Great video!

AskTheCarExperts says:

If you are getting no air at all then I would first suspect the FSU. If the
air blows but not cold then it would be something else relating to the AC
system such as a compressor failing, low charge, or electrical fan
(auxillary fan) problems.

AskTheCarExperts says:

This unit is available on EBAY 🙂

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hell Bill, I have seen a lot of drain issues from FSU’s. I enjoy electrical
issues like drains to trace down 🙂 One other common drain on your vehicle
is the electrical fan for the engine also knows as the auxillary fan.
Thanks for the comment and it is great you got it solved!

LtcGuitarMan says:

10-4…will replace that little puppy today.

LtcGuitarMan says:

Will the FSU cause the blower motor to run after the car is turned off? Had
to remove the fuse to the blower to get the thing to stop. Thx…your posts
are very helpful.

AskTheCarExperts says:

This is posted on the BMW website: A warranty regardless of miles for two
years is offered. This would only be for a failed part that was purchased
from the dealer.

StangGirlRacing says:

Thanks for your great vids! They have helped my wife & I on many occasions.
We have an 03 X5. The current issue is our a/c blower motor. At first it
began making chirping noises off & on. One day it stopped completely. Fuses
have been checked. Sometimes it sits for 10 or 20 minutes & begins working
again. Took off panels on either side in the floor board & tried to spray
the blower motor bearing as best I could with WD40. Do you think it’s the
FSU or blower motor? Any help is much appreciated!

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello, I am glad this helped 🙂 Thank you for the great comment!

AskTheCarExperts says:

Thank you for the comment Vanessa!

AskTheCarExperts says:

Thanks for the information. I have only used OEM so never new how bad other
FSU’s are. And BMW offers a 2 year warranty that covers labor if it fails
during the two year period on most parts if purchased by the dealer even if
someone else installed it! 😉

AskTheCarExperts says:

That is great! I wonder why they would have tried to sell you both. The
final stage is the usual problem. Thanks for watching 🙂

david gower says:

Hi, is the FSU located in the centre console or in the side by doors,I am
from the uk so glove compartment is on left where your steering wheel is,
many thanks Dg.

Mark Ellis says:

This was relatively easy… 20 minutes – tops! Thanks my X5 2003 is working
fine!

AskTheCarExperts says:

Hello Mark, Thank you for the great comment 🙂 I am glad my video helped
you to replace the FSU on your X5!
