lloydnyerssaunders says:

taking the covers off the engine to get to the coils will be different for all models, obviously

lloydnyerssaunders says:

yea mate, its the same for every petrol bmw (diesels dont have ignition coils). honestly its the same for just about every car that has the coils over the spark plug. just dont try it on old style ignition leads- you’ll get a nasty shock

fynestfort says:

Is it the same process for bmw 325i 2003

lloydnyerssaunders says:

me too doc, continue to spread the awesome word

TheSQDoctor says:

Thank you! Had a misfire in the 6th cylinder, followed your advice to check if it’s the coil, checked all other cylinders, got a replacement coil at Advance Auto for $60, saved $300 or more by not going to the dealer. I love Youtube, the internet, and all the great folks who post such helpful info like this!

Hi there! I see you answered my question with Karanjy. Just double checking that this order has not changed? I drive a 2007 E92. It doesn’t misfire unless I push it hard (turbo’s at high boost). Any tips? I’m not sure if I’ll hear any rpm differences.

lloydnyerssaunders says:

if you open your bonnet the closest cylinder to you will be #1 followed by 2,3,4,5 and 6

Karanjy says:

Hey i have a 2000 e46 with the M52TU25 engine n my cylinder number 5 is faulty i have a miss fire but the problem is idk which cylinder Number 5. could u please help me with that thank you

We have a 2010 X5 3.0 and the local dealership has already replaced 3 coils in last 2 mths. They are saying it is NOT an underlying issue (I.e. transmission, gasket, etc) but its hard to believe this would continue? We only have 45k on the vehicle. Is it possible it IS just a coil issue and could be fixed now or will we likely continue to have issues or worse, have something more serious to repair after our powertrain coverage ends in Jan ’14. THANKS IN ADVANCE!

for bmw coils ive never had a problem, ive also felt that before but while pulling off an ignition lead which is a bit different. the bmw coils are highly insulated and the plug you undo on top is the low voltage part, as well as the fact that the spark is at the bottom of the tube away from your body makes it quite safe. the ignition lead i undid was connected straight to the plug and my hand was too close so the spark from the lead jumped to me. good fun getting zapped though eh? :p

Matiboy75 says:

is it safe to grab a coil while engine is on? i did it once and lit up like a pinball machine

derek smith says:

tried it left it out for half an hour did not work, but today it went off by itself. thanks for your help ad buy you a beer if a could

lloydnyerssaunders says:

yea, maybe. first try removing the battery negative terminal for 5 minutes- it might just loose its memory. you’ll have to reset all your radio, settings and all that but it could be worth it

derek smith says:

replaced two of them for now running sweet! lol, yellow engine light still on will this go away in time or do i have to get a garage to remove it or do i still have a problem.

lloydnyerssaunders says:

no worries derek. the last thing to consider is that its good practice to replace all the coils at once (seeing as they have all lasted through the same operating conditions), but its not a must. you can just replace the individual coil or coils that are playing up if youre a bit on the skint side atm, but if it happens again later down the track to the other coils you’ll have to replace them (if or when that happens)

derek smith says:

i have a flashing eml then constant when moving, engine judders like its misfire was about to send into garage. but from watching this video i will try this 95% sure its a coil e90 320i 2005 86k. thanks from scotland

lloydnyerssaunders says:

ok, thats good. if its been a while since the plugs have been replaced the idle control system may be a little off for a while because its adjusted itself to old plugs- driving for a few days might allow it to adjust itself back. it wont be a coil issue if its only rough for a few seconds at start up, it more likely thats caused by bad fuel, a dirty maf sensor or dirty injectors or valves, but for now just make sure youre using 95 or 98 octane fuel, give it a few days and it should come good.

NayuduSrini Nayudu says:

It has original BMW branded NGK ILZFR6D11. As per the part number also, it is NGK. I replaced with same plugs (NGK Laser Iridium). Also issue is only with Cylinder 2.

lloydnyerssaunders says:

your plugs should be bosch iridium from memory, not NGK- check with your dealership. wont be a coil if changing plugs fixes it

NayuduSrini Nayudu says:

Hi,

I have 2007 328i N52k with 95k miles. Idle is little rough, around 660RPM. I replaced with new NGK OEM spark plugs and cylinder 2 had misfire when cold(engine cold and weather is cold). Assuming new plug is defective, I put back in old plug in cylinder 2, and misfire is gone. Now, I replaced with another new Spark plug again on cylinder 2, and when it is cold it misfires for few seconds/minutes until engine warms up again. Do you think it is coil?
Thanks

mike hosler says:

awesome video, simple.. this saved me the hassle doing a full diagnostic, just did the same test on my 06 e90 and now diagnosed.. thanks you

lloydnyerssaunders says:

low oil level should cause a little yellow oil can warning to come up, similarly low coolant should cause a yellow fluid symbol to come up. an engine light could be caused by something being outside parameters for the dde (engine ecu) like 02 sensors, intake air, fuel injection or blocked exhaust. get a fault code read out to give you some direction

variano3 says:

Should be cuz my oil level is minim? Coolant?

variano3 says:

Exhaust deteriorated

variano3 says:

It say also abt ignition coils …

variano3 says:

Hm it has appear that yellow engine and I read in the book what does mean and says abt ignition.. It’s a 530diesel 2004

lloydnyerssaunders says:

what do you mean it doesnt work? what is the issue you are having with your car?

lloydnyerssaunders says:

none. ignition systems are for petrol models only. diesels dont need them because the air fuel mixture is self ignited by compression

variano3 says:

how many coils does 530d 2004 have? thank you

tonymedrano40able says:

Excellent video I tried ur option s but it still doesn’t work what else do u Suggest I can do next Can it be the Wiring.?

lloydnyerssaunders says:

i went to where there is some actual money- the mines

ThisIsNotSharyn says:

If you’re skilled/experienced, why didn’t you pick up and go to another dealership (relocate)?

lloydnyerssaunders says:

not metro. outside the major city. means we werent given, or more accurately we didnt have because we werent required to have, the latest stuff and up to date training.

ThisIsNotSharyn says:

What do you mean by “rural,” exactly?

lloydnyerssaunders says:

no, i worked for a ‘rural’ dealership that didnt have great turn over, but i suspect a major dealership to have much better resources for salary, in house and large scale training. working there had many perks and would be fine for a long career if they paid well enough, mine didnt even breach $20 p/h -_-

ThisIsNotSharyn says:

Did you like working for BMW? I was told by my dealer that if I go there in October with my degree in automotive, they’ll promise me a spot in the STEP program.

I work at a Mopar dealership now…too many workers and not enough work.

Did you make good money?

lloydnyerssaunders says:

ive never heard of anyone using this method. if you follow the method in this video you will be able to find a miss, but if you dont hear a misfire then i wouldnt go poking around wasting your time. expect slight vibration in your engine at idle because the air fuel mixture is leaned off as far as it can go at this stage to better emissions and fuel economy

beachguy1100 says:

Hi,
Have a 2003 325I sedan and want to know if my coils are faulty. When placing a glass of water on top of the engine, the water vibrates minimally, without any big shakes, just vibration enough to cause the water to ripple in waves a little. Is this cause for concern? There seems to be no miss, no CEL light on, but want to make sure the water observation is any reason for concern. The car has 80k and runs good, with new plugs and tune up.

lloydnyerssaunders says:

it could be either, but e36 coils are uncommon to be bad. start with plugs cause theyre cheaper

TX2673XA says:

Sory my bad english :)

TX2673XA says:

I have a e36 320i non vanos and it shake and sometimes when i push the gass shake again and it is not going fast up like before. I have coils problem or sparkplug ? thx

lloydnyerssaunders says:

not unless theyre restricting pressure to the point of stalling the car. highly unlikely

hossen mohamed tamreze says:

yes sorry fuel gauge.

my agency said that my car has been at the garage for 6 month without driving due to the ex owner has gone abroad and liv the car at agency!

you think these filter could make the car shaking when cold and morning start ?
waiitng.

lloydnyerssaunders says:

not unless youve been using rubbish fuel for ages. and fuel ‘pressure gauge’ not regulator
