BMW E90 Air Bag Removal DIY – Replace Trim or Change Steering Wheel

Removing the air bag on a BMW can be really tricky unless you know the trick, then it’s super easy! I need to remove mine so that I can change some trim, but maybe you want to remove your regular steering wheel and upgrade to the M-Sport one that you bought on eBay (you’ll need a different airbag as well). This video will show you how to do that.

Be careful to keep your battery unplugged when doing this. If you are changing the trim like I am and you’re using a screwdriver rather than a ratchet and you need to turn the wheel for whatever reason, do that before you disconnect the battery and remove the airbag, because if you plug the battery back in and turn the ignition on while the airbag is removed, that will store an error in the SRS module and you will need a BMW scan tool to clear that error afterward.

The scan tool I used in this video can be found here:

Do you know if your replacement is any more durable than the old one??

Jesper Lindqvist says:

I don't remember removing airbag when I did this, is the m sport steering wheel different?

BimmerBoy says:

At that point I would of just took off the entire steering wheel , to not get the airbag light .

throat says:

Are those steering wheels backwards compatible with the e46?
