►A BMW E46 M3’s spark plugs and ignition coils are under constant stress during engine operation. The S54 engine uses high compression and revs high, putting enough stress on the ignition system that the service interval is less than your standard 3-series engine. Early signs of worn ignition components can be a misfire or a reduction in fuel economy. However, other faults can cause those symptoms, so ignition faults can be tricky to diagnose. We usually recommend an ignition service immediately if there’s no information about when they were last changed.
More extreme symptoms of failing coils and plugs are reduced power, hard starting, and power breakup in the higher RPMs. If you’re experiencing any of those issues, we recommend performing an ignition service. At the very least, you’ll know you have new parts installed and a Lifetime Replacement Guarantee to back them up.

Very easy job indeed. Great blowing out the debris around the spark plugs. On my old car the plastic tube around the ignition coil wires was so old and cracked that there were plastic bits everywhere, so a bit of compressed air goes a long way.
Well, all good except that I really wanted to hear that engine running. That was not nice, not to start it.
