Hi Dan, I have an 05 ZHP and an 04 M56. The fuel filter is indeed built
into the fuel tank, along with the fuel pump. All 3 are built together as 1
unit. It’s about a $7k job to replace them. That’s why I bought the 330…
anybody wanna buy my 325? 🙂

Stefan Eccles says:

Good detail about pulling the fuel pump fuse, to stop excess spillage!

billy mitchell says:

good vid..I better do my filter

John Owens says:

I will be doing both the filter and fuel pump in a few days, my question is
can I replace the clamps with worm drive style clamps?

David Bartholomew says:

I did as suggested and removed the fuse and ran the car till it died to
empty the fueal line. But I had a heck of a time removing the hoses from
the old filter. I started on the single front hose. When it finally came
free I was ready with a can to capture the excess fuel spillage. But
instead I was sprayed with pressurized petrol. It was under pressure. Got
me right in the face and soaked my tee shirt. Had to run to the shower. Be
careful! The rest of the job went more smoothly.

Unfortunately, the M56 engine’s fuel filter is sealed inside the gas tank
along with the fuel pump, rendering it non servicable. If FP goes out after
the 150K warranty, its a ridiculously expensive repair..

Glad everyone found this one useful, thanks for your comments and support,

..thanks for taking the time to record this procedure…you just save me
150 on labor thanks ance again

Rob Luce says:

On the M56 SULEV engine for the 325i, the fuel filter is actually not
replaceable, it’s located inside the gas tank, and involves replacing the
entire tank.

D.R. Boyd says:

excellent video very informative..we are right at 80,000 03 330ci and i
think it’s time!

onDishez says:

What is the reason to remove the ruse again? Also do these rules apply for
e46 M3 2005? Thx

Dan Tsuchiya says:

These rules generally apply to the e46 M3, I don’t know about the M56
engine but I don’t think they have changed much.

rd nj says:

what about the M56 engine ?

putyoursoxon360 says:

this does not apply to the M3 the fuel filter is in the same location but
the filter is different and has a pressure release

smefeman says:

thanks for this video, it was very helpful

reynoldsray85 says:

Awesome, I’m doing this first thing in the morning…

Tyler Barnette says:

If I am not mistaken, the M56 is the SULEV engine. Which supposedly saves
more baby seals. For some reason, this engine comes with its fuel pump and
possibly the filter, INSIDE the gas tank. So if something goes wrong with
the pump on one of these, the owner has to buy a new $6000 gas tank. Just
for future reference.

Dan Tsuchiya says:

Good filter brands would be German/Bavarian based such as Mann, Mahle,
Knecht, and Bosch
