I’m likely going to replace these too. I’m also afraid of the car being too high with new struts and springs, so if the springs are in good shape I might just use the old ones. They’re likely slightly compressed and that would suit me. I’ve noticed that after lifting the car to work on it, and then lowering it back down, it sights comically high until driven, so it’s possible this is the case with new struts too. Anyway, I don’t want the car lowered at all, but just want the fenders to match the wheel curve perfectly. Will update once this is done.

Hey are you in Southern California? Do you work on your friends e46? I need coil overs installed.

tunaste says:

Isn't that the spot where you put an extra washer on the DIY video the first time? 11:17

Dan C says:

Shock do not alter the ride height unless they are high pressured. The shock mounts and washers can if the design are different, did you compare the set shipped with the blistein? . You may bottom out the struts if you use reg on a sports spring car.

Joe'n Bro says:

I watched you before I could drive. Drooling over your E46. Now your helping get my clown shoe get back on the road

TonyS says:

Thanks Jason for being transparent. Knowing what not to do is 50% of the battle. Working on these cars is like doing surgery that's why we love your videos. Moral of the story, stick with original BMW or OE parts to prevent your mind playing games on you.

Thanks for the video, can relate so much. I changed my E83's sport suspension for regular Bilstein B4s, because they were done and way too stiff. New ones are better, but still quite stiff. I researched for weeks before ordering mine, because it's a very tricky task. You first need to verify what you have (might be different from your OEM parts because somebody changed them already). Then the codes might have changed and the question is always do you have sport suspension settings or not. Glad to see the effort was actually worth it 🙂

I live smack dab between fcp and ecs in PA so its 2 days even with the free shipping.

Front struts and springs….. kicking peoples ass since forever. Lol. I did mine last week. I have the e46 convertible with m sport suspension. I did sachs struts with eibach springs. It was a very pleasant afternoon of profanities.

Sean Paul says:

The strut does not affect the ride height. Ride height is governed by the spring tension. Basic physics. Whenever you change your struts it takes a few weeks for the ride height to settle back to normal. All of the struts in your garage collection will eventually settle at the same ride height if you stick with the same springs.

airwolf 09 says:

why Bilstein's sport strut is taller than an OEM Sport strut?

M G says:

Has your car the option Code 226 called Sportliche Fahrwerkabstimmung? I can see your car has an M Package, right? You have to get the shocks with the option for that… EIBACH Part No is 22-139931 and 22-139948 ;-).
BMW and all their suppliers like Sachs and Lemförder have changed the height of the strut bearings a few years ago… They are about 1 cm higher 🙁 Thats the reason why cars which are supplied and repaired with new strut bearings are higher about 1cm than they used to be :-(. Of course you could install lowering springs, i would recommed you the Eibach Pro Kit Springs ( Part No is E2067-140 ) or you could buy the shock bearings for the BMW Z4 3.0. They fit for the e46 you only have to remove the pin which is screwed in. Reason why many people here in Germany use those is that they lower the e46 at front by about 1 cm or 0.4 inches as you guys say in the usa. The part no is from Lemförder 2730901. I wish you good luck and many greets from Germany. Me, i drive a 1999 323ci and 138.000 miles and i still am very happy with my car.

For those watching this, you suppose to stick the bump into the boot, there is a groove for it to keep it holding and then slide the whole thing onto the shaft. Jason did it backwards.

Shamar Jackson says:

please keep making these videos to anything you your the only guy i trust to follow to fix my car ahahaha

Chrispy says:

My 330 use to make the same sound!!!! I spray WD40 on the struts under the hood and it takes away the noise even though they need to be replaced also changing the rack and pinion helped tremendously

Mistakes happen! We learn from it, hope others will learn from our mistakes. Thanks for your humbleness.

Ken Duong says:

welcome back jason. this video is too funny. probably the subtle difference w/ the SACH shocks is from the lack of light. will need to do my shocks for my wagon soon.

MBSRN says:

There are three different suspensions for the e46. The standard version, the sport version (SA 226) and the M suspension version (SA 704). In your first video you saw that you had a sport suspension. The marking Sport was also on it. The SA 226 is 20 mm lower than the standard version. In addition, there was a change in the strut bearings for the front. They are now 10 mm higher than before, so your car is as high as a bus.

Max Day says:

Great video mate very helpful

Michael Mangone says:

Great video! Doing my struts and shocks soon.

Aither says:

I guess OEM height is high.. 😀 You are in a loop of lowering the car and buying bigger wheels now! : DDD
