thanks for the reply! I’ll search around the web i guess and see if it’s possible, otherwise i’ll settle for the EONON unit which looks similar to the post-facelift unit.

E39Source says:

Hmm. Update pre-facelift casette to post-facelift CD/MID. That could very well be a plug and play upgrade…. or you may need the entire wiring adapter. My E39 is an M5, so I have the navigation technology, I am not too familiar with the other stuff. I’m sure though that if you Google for that upgrade, you’ll find a lot, I’m sure you’re not the only person with that idea. Good luck!

Hi there 🙂

Umm just a quick question. I have a 1998 e39 528i, it has the old fashioned cassette player etc etc and I was wondering if it were possible to remove the screen/cd player from a newer e39 (eg 2001-03) and put it in my car? Would it be compatible or?

E39Source says:

I’m not sure if the Japanese versions use the same software and computers… but my MKIV computer I used the M logo splash screen version of V32.

Hi maite, i am from new zealand, i just bought BMW 530i its a japan import i have seen lot of your videos on upgrading the computer versions, i have DVD navigation system in the boot but on screen i can not find the version of it, i despratly want to change to newer version , just want to know the version 32 that you used will it be good hea..

E39Source says:

Personally, no. I like keeping mine stock just for looks and since that’s the way it was meant to be. Plus, our smartphones now do all of things we actually need to do.

ahmad ali says:

Do you recommend the bluetooth, touch screen, HD quality, USP, SD card, etc. Navigation?? i have a 2003 540i with navigation in it?

Thank you..

E39Source says:

That is the computer that makes the screen work, yes.

Fernando Lagunas says:

Thank you, do I need to buy the DVD GPS in the back? Where the trunk is.

E39Source says:

They cal sell you the parts at a high price, but I don’t know if they’d do the labor to install everything.

Fernando Lagunas says:

It does not come with a Navigation. Do you think the BMW Dealership can help?

E39Source says:

This can either be really easy or really hard. If your 540i has navigation, it’s the same exact process I did in this video. If it doesn’t, it’s a pain in the ass. You need to run all of the wires through the car, get power to it, etc. I don’t know how to do this process, but you can probably find through Google somewhere.

Fernando Lagunas says:

Great video you guys! i have a 1998 BMW 540i and can you upgrade it to a mark 4 GPS Navigation. Right now i have the 6 CD changer a cassette in the front the radio has DSP. If you can make a video about doing this (if possible) great(: or tell me here.

E39Source says:

All American M5s came with navigation as standard. It was an option in Europe, so some have the basic 5 series setup.

the2014 says:

while im here im curious to know, why are some m5s with just regular radio, like i had in my 540, i thought screen was in all m5s e39s

E39Source says:

I’m not personally sure with that technology in the E38s, but I would venture a good guess that it would work. Both the E38 7 series and E39 5 series were in production in 1996, so the technology should be similar. Best of luck to you!

Dylan Dingbaum says:

Hi, I just purchased a 1997 BMW 528i, and the original radio screen is messed up and is very difficult to read. I really want to replace it with a radio from a 1996 BMW 7 Series E38 radio I found (it’s the one that has the smaller screen display) on ebay, is this possible, if I remove both the radio and the tape player? It said it was compatable with my car on ebay but I am not sure

E39Source says:

I do not have a TV Tuner, so I don’t know about the compatibility. The 16:9 display is very simple to install though. I would install it and see what graphics the TV Tuner outputs. If they’re still 4:3, maybe update the software on the Tuner, or disconnect the battery for a few minutes. If that doesn’t work, maybe there is a new model? I’ve never used one so I don’t know much about them, sorry!

Trip Maschmeyer says:

Hey Ryan I purchased a mk4 computer and it works flawlessly on my 4:3 display. I also recently purchased a 16:9 display which as I understand from your website is pretty much plug and play. However the seller mentioned that I might need to upgrade the tv module in the trunk between the CD player and the amplifier in order to not have the 4:3 graphics display incorrectly on my 16:9 display. My car is a 2000 M5. Is this something only non-M5 E39s need to worry about?

E39Source says:

It sounds like it’s an MKIII then… does it say “DVD” where the disk goes in? If not, it’s an MKIII. You can try to update to the latest MKIII software, and any CD based sat map disks will work. If it is a MKIV, then update to version 32 and get the latest BMW DVD maps.

David B says:

Great video on the upgrade! Question for you….I just purchased a 2002 325Ci and it was supposed to come with the MKIII, but the previous owner did an upgrade to the MKIV DVD computer in the trunk. I also have the 16:9 display in the dash, butunder settings it is showing as SW 3 1/50, which would indicate that it still has the MKIII installed. Is there something missing to have this officially upgraded to the MKIV so I can update the maps? Any input would be appreciated.

E39Source says:

Use the one that Mode and Form MKIII only. And you may need the Key CD, check out the description box of this video for the article and other video that detail the MKIII process.

Tutu Steele says:

I tried the clone part and it didn’t work for me my screen says cd key or version 17

E39Source says:

Yes, you can. The graphics will be stretched though.

jkjmskud says:

Can I use a 16:9 display with a MKII computer?

E39Source says:

They all have the tape decks still. There is no way that I know of to get a CD slot in the dash, it’s all done from the trunk (6 disk). There is no way to get aux input either. 🙁

Milan Popovich says:

I wanted this screen in my 97 540i/6 but am disappointed to see the tape deck. Do they make them with a CD slot instead? And is there even an aux cable input on these? At least in the rear of it? If I have to run it through the glove box that’s okay. If not I’ll go with a clarion. A reply would be much appreciated!

E39Source says:

4-1/00 is the latest. Note that even on that, terminating guidance will still leave the white line on the map for some reason…

JetTech757A says:

I was wondering what the difference between SW 4-1/00 and SW 4-1/02 and could it affect the ability to cancel a route. When I try to cancel an active route from the terminate guidance option I do not get the yes/no option. any thoughts ?

lydvis says:

Found out solution myself, hope it will be useful for E39 Touring owners. There is a cable from E39 sedan, that fits to extend the GPS antenna cable for E39 Touring upgrading from MK1/MK2 to MK3/MK4. Part. nr. 61 12 8 377 434

lydvis says:

Super DIY, respect for that!! I have changed 4:3 screen to 16:9 and MK2 computer to MK3 for my 1997 E39 528i Touring, but I have found out that GPS antena (Trimble) for Touring is under carpet near the rear seats and gas tank. There is also located amplifier. So cable is too short to plug it to MK3 computer. Anybody have done the same for Touring? How to extend it, because it’s not a simple cable that you can cut it..? Would be very thankful for any advice..

E39Source says:

Ebay is probably your best bet!

rowan watt says:

Do you know where I can obtain a MK4 navigation system. I’m looking for one for my BMW M5 2000
