I also hear a rattling when I start the car. I suspected it could be the solonoids since my car literally stalls out but I'm now worried it's more of a Vanos as a "whole" issue

Han where you at bro and how much to do it lmao very detailed but I think this goes way beyond my skill level

Hello Han, thanks for the video. I was wondering if you need gasket sealant on the mating surfaces when refitting?

Peter Polyderas says:

Hey Hans, Great video. It seems that I have a problem with the upper timing belt tensioner. Loud tick-tick noise from start on. Can I replace it without removing the vanos? Can not find any videos for the upper tensioner

TheAkNas says:

Hello, while changing CCV(due to high oil consumption), the old hose that went from CCV to crankcase was not even connected, after installing new CCV and connecting all hoses, engine started fine and was driving good.
After changing oil, engine went into limp mode, long crank, wanting to stall , check engine light. Mechanic said 3 fault codes leading to bad VANOS, and suggested to work on both VANOS ( I guess using some kind of repair kit?). Does that make sense?
Engine is N52
Fault code that I checked with my phone is
P0341
Camshaft position sensor "A" circuit range/performance (Bank1 or single sensor)
Maybe there are more but only this one shows up as the check engine light cause.

Definitely a great vid, thanks for uploading! I just wish you had started the engine at the end to hear the result.
On a different topic, my 323i e46 started making a weird noise lately, when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd gear after some hard driving. It's not really a grinding noise… it's like something starts spinning fast immediately after engaging 2nd gear, on the driver's side. And if you push the clutch pedal the sound stops. I can only describe it because it's very difficult to catch on video, since it doesn't happen all the time, only intermittently. Would you have an idea about what that could be?
Thanks!

Jean Philippe Rastrullo says:

How many hours did this repair take you in total? Also, the procedure on beisan systems talks about taking care of the pistons to not damage them — did dropping it when the spring popped, or using a flathead screw driver to removal the seals cause any problems?

Also what are the torque specs for the exterior bolts that secure the VANOS unit? the 10mm ones. Sorry for so many questions!
