OSV?. if you replace the valve oil seal(VOS) them one or more seals are not
seated properly.inspect spark plugs for oily carbon build-up will identify
problem seal in cylinder.

SteveXnycperformance says:

@tnycman no. its the nyc ghetto.

angelsocial says:

@SteveXnycperformance oh ok bro thanks alot 🙂 this was useful. ill keep
you posted on the progress 🙂

SteveXnycperformance says:

@slove221 Might be a oil pan or rear main seal.

SteveXnycperformance says:

@CRISTO0507 The 1997 740i has a V8 or V12 aluminum cylinder heads. Most
likely, when the spark plug was replace, the installer must have
cross-thread the aluminum thread in the cylinder head.

does the engine turn over(rotate/spin) when the key is turn to start
position?. have you reset the ECM by dis/connecting the battery and retry?.
does the instrument cluster display any information?

@CBR919RR1 Here is an update on the O2 sensors. I found that I had a high
performance oiled air filter that was contaminating the emission system all
the way back to my downstream sensors. A new air filter and CRC brand MAF
sensor cleaner took care of the intake and the alcohol cleaning process
worked for the O2 sensors but I will probably pull them again and use the
MAF cleaner. I had not discovered the oiled air filter when I first cleaned
them with the alcohol. Getting better mpg!

SteveXnycperformance says:

how long have you been driving with it smoking? perform another visual
inspection, something may not be right.need more detail on smoking?

SteveXnycperformance says:

@beaman220 Alldata is good a writing books, nothing wrong with that. I am
too Experience. I did not remove the conduct wiring harness about the fuel
injector. By unbolting the VC, you should be able to pull the cover off. it
a very tight spot, but if you move the VC around while lifting it off the
cyl head.Removing the conduct harness will require replacement of injector
O-ring, plus the injector are Plastic(be careful).both side VC should come
off with out removing the harness.

SteveXnycperformance says:

@CBR919RR1 Is oil building up on the ceramic portion of the O2 sensor?
(inside the exhaust manifold).then The engine might have worn-out valve
stem seal or excessive blow-by from the piston rings. Does the tail pipe
smoke when the engine is running? You might be able to condition the valve
stem seal by adding a “stop leak/smoke” additive with oil change. The 02
sensor should be replace every 50-60,000 miles. Check the spark plug to
fine the leaky cylinder.

SteveXnycperformance says:

recheck you wiring connection and the pin inside all connector plugs.the
cylinder head is equip with camshaft position sensor make is in working.

CRISTO0507 says:

hello, i have a problem with my 97 740i. one of the spark plugs keeps
getting blown out. i put one of those sparkplug spacers and it starts up
fine and runs good, but if i step on it the engine blows out that
sparkplug. any idea what might be going on?

wintint316 says:

i meant the oil sending unit on the back of the intake manifold, and the
gasket in between

SteveXnycperformance says:

@zech007 Na, it`s simpler and cost less to use a copper wire brush with
safty-cleaner. maybe BMW will sand blast it, to if out its ruin. they you
will have to spend a few $1000`s for brand name new valve cover.lol.

hsmarlon says:

Thx you have save me hundreds of dollars. I had exactly this problem. I
replaced my gaskets and plugs, also I reset my code, now I have no problems
3 weeks strong. Also it stopped my ticking in my engine, I guess my
lifters, but it’s running like a well tuned machine.

beaman220 says:

Question for you. Saw you didn’t take the wiring harnesses off the top that
house the coil power wires. When I checked Alldata it said you had to
remove them and lift up. But those damn things are connected to the
injectors though. I go the pass side valve cover unscrewed but did not get
it off because those wire harnesses were blocking me.

Vytautas Gulbinavicius says:

Hi there, how to disconnect black wire which is sitting above cover and
stopping me to take cover off, hope you know one I am talking about, one goes
across the cover,I believe it is positive lead. Could you guys send some
info to vgulbe@gmail.com Thanks

angelsocial says:

@SteveXnycperformance thanks, i will look into it 🙂 this is from my other
profile. they also told me it could be a valve in the cylinder.

beaman220 says:

@SteveXnycperformance Thanks for the response! It says you don’t have to
remove the injector. But disconnect the electrical plug going to the
injector and then lift the harness housing up and off. I tried for about 5
min to move that cover around and get it off. Then told the cust that we
will have should replace the grommets for the bolts that hold the cover
down (which he didn’t have at the time) and hit it this next weekend. But
man that cover was on there.

how much would it be to rebuild a engine or buy one from a bmw 2000-2001
740i sport -thinking of getting a 2000-01 740i sport -and also when you
rebuild it you can put a zero on the odometer ?

SteveXnycperformance says:

@CRISTO0507 To fix this problem, you will need a machine shop to install
Helix-coil in the aluminum cylinder head thread.

hi … i have bmw 540i 1997 .. i have problem oil leaking 3 time already
change valve cover gasket but till leaking same as b4.. can u help me….?

smellThis says:

Good. Thanks. BMW valve covers are aluminum. You get one chance to fail.
Don’t go crazy with abrasives. Use 3m noscratch sponge or fine sand
sponge&cleaner . I did alternator, serpentine, a/c belt and oxygen sensors.
Valve covers are on the list. Valve covers leak making oil in exhaust
fouling the O2 sensors. Soaked sensors in 90% rubbing alcohol for an hour
then flamed the tips to cherry red and the code went away. Not enough miles
to tell if it fixed the oil fouling but good 4 now.

wintint316 says:

the car was burning oil as well, so i replaced the osv and the gasket on
the back of the intake mani, i have only drove the car a total of approx 25
miles i dont know what the hell to do, the car dosent burn oil like it did
but smoking persists still

24MONILUV24 says:

Hello Steve i need your assistance! i have a 2000 740IL and the check
engine light is on. I got the emmision/diagnostic code of P0443. I think
its called a purge valve or something. so i got the purge valve, had it
replaced, had the sensor removed. a few miles down the road the check
engine sensor came back on. do you have any idea what other issue could be
going on with the car that gave me the code of P0443? i really need help,
to keep my current state registration thank you in adavnce!

hsmarlon says:

I had the misfire in cylinder 7 and oil was present where the plugs go on
my 2001 BMW 740iL, so I replace all 8 plugs and gaskets. The driver side
plugs as I pulled them out they were full of oil, but the pass was not as
bad. I had a ticking sound before I changed the gaskets, but its gone since
I change them. I cleared the code and its a done deal and purring like a
kitten, also extremely quite now. I just finished my car today 11/19/11.
Excellent post.

zech007 says:

Dont you have to sand blast the valve covers to get a proper seal???

wintint316 says:

help! my cars been sitting for 2 months, i repaired the vcgs and plugs now
it smokes!!!?

Walter Hernandez says:

Hi steve i have the same car but but do not start the engine for misfire
problem so I replace the spark plugs and gaskets but still will not start
the engine. What can I do?

SteveXnycperformance says:

@beaman220 Yes, the rubber grommet, cap nuts with metal washer are very
important, and must be replace so the VC can be torque to seal with the cyl
head. Be very careful not to let any object fall into the valve train or
timing chain compartment. Thank you for the inquire and good luck..

SteveXnycperformance says:

@angelsocial a damage valve or un-seal/seated valve will cause a
mis-fire,but a valve will not cause the spark to eject.

Darren Hayes says:

I just replaced the valve cover gasket on my 95 bmw 740il (e38) problem is
that i seem to have a extra sensor…and i can’t find where it goes. can
you help?

SteveXnycperformance says:

@hvcool Odometer we don`t do. Its against the law. you are better off
buying a used engine from the junkyard and have it replace. We can locate
the engine and install it to run like factory with a warranty. It the best
cost effective way with the same BMW durability. Rebuilding is for
performance.
