Aloha that sounds like a good idea! I should have thought about that too.
We had lots of time so I wanted to clean and inspect everything. It really
didn’t matter because a few weeks later the rack failed. Hang in there you
are almost done.

after you put it back to normal, do you need to align the car?

Well if you do it this way, as long as you don’t play witht he tie rod end
settings you will not have to. After this I ended up changing the Struts,
Shocks, Tie Rods, Lower Control Arms The Ball joints are attached to the
Lower Control Arms, Sway Bar Links, Rear Control Arm Bushings,Rebuilt Rack
and Pinion from sams rack and pinion great seller ebay and now the E46
feels great! You can score all of these parts on ebay really cheap. .

type of oilpan gasket did you get Factory or aftermarket?

doing this same job now…on here looking for a torque sequence….did mine
a lil different….left rack on subframe and removed together….also left
sway bar hanging by the link ends….all turn out well
