BMW 330i 325i E46 Power Steering Pump Replacement DIY

LUK LF30 Power Steering Pump: https://amzn.to/2vesi0f

I had a vibration that I wasn’t able to pinpoint but I also had some pulley noise which I traced back to the power steering pump. So I went ahead and switch it out with a used unit that I pulled from a junkyard. That solved the noise.

The pump I had already was the LF-30, which is the later model pump. The earlier pump was the LF-20 and that had a shaft that would shear off and make the pump fail, so it’s definitely a good idea to replace those with the LF-30. The two pumps have different pressure lines so you will have to change that as well.

The BMW part number for the updated LF-30 pressure line is: 32416764725

Mr 50s kid, did you by chance figure out what that bolt was that was missing for the power steering pump on the bottom of the car? I am missing it as well and I bought oil filter housing bolts because I thought it was part of that but now seeing this video I am wrong and unsure of what bolt I need to get

First of all just want to say thanks for all the amazing videos, you truly have helped me immensly and I know lots of others. Couple things I ran into on mine that threw me a bit and I'm not sure if mine was some weird anamoly or due to a bolt head being sheared off. When I got to the step of actually removing the pump I saw only the 13mm bolt head on the left side. There was no bold head on the right side. Looking from the back I could see what appears to be an inverted torx nut? Are some built like this or would that be a way to fix the bolt head being sheared off? Reason I ask is according to a online step by step article you remove the back bracket bolt and then remove the right side of the front bracket bolt from the rear-but it was a regular 13mm bolt head not an inverted torx. Did not have any inverted torx sockets so I just removed the pump by taking out the 3 torx bolts on front, and since the shaft was completely sheared off pump was very easy to get out. I sure hope the shaft on this new pump is more substantial, OEM immer was out of the AE pump that is supposed to be beefier. Also my back bracket was the type with only one bolt on to the pump, is that because mine is an LF 20, back bracket is different on LF 30? I am definitely gonna swap my hydraulic tensioner for the manual one also. Thanks again, it worked out great!

My steering on my Bmw E46 touring 2001 is really hard, almost non responsive, and i think my steering rack is at fault, but could the power steering pump also be broken?

Didn't have to remove fan clutch?

Such a great help. Must admit I was more confident before I watched. A lot of tight spaces there and I've just added an impact driver to the must have tool list! Anyway, thanks man!
