Once unwound the cable cannot be re-secured without it failing again.
Sounds like replacement will be needed.

great video, thanks man

AskTheCarExperts says:

Let me know what you find in there 🙂 I had always thought the crunching
was from the cable failing and fraying. Looking forward to hearing what you
find!

Hi mate, That’s a great video. I know the cable tie method works as I have
used it a few times on my e46. There’s one fault i haven’t be able to
repair. Have you ever fixed the crunching sound problem that comes from
inside the sealed part behind the motor mount where the cable go round the
spool? Do you know what I mean?

AskTheCarExperts says:

Nice 🙂 For the noise you have if you are still referring to the window
regulator, then only replacement of the regulator will fix this problem.
The cable is failing and as it winds around the motor it can make some
horrible crunching noise like on the unfixable regulator I had.

Hello Tony, That is great! Mine is still holding as well 🙂 Thanks for the
great comment!

Thanks for the reply! Yes, Im still talking regulator – (2000 e46 driver
side). The motor is fine but the spool it plugs into (inside the sealed
part) is making the noise. The casing is held together by 4 rivets which
would have to be drilled for access. The cable doesn’t seemed frayed at all
but I am curious to see what has failed inside there as it’s happened once
before. Yes the noise is the same as your one, its a horrible crunch. I’m
going to drill it open and see what went wrong!

Tony Yang says:

Thanks for the crisscross suggestion as it held the slider a lot better
than parallel. My window is now fixed!

repair 🙂 I hope you where able to fix yours as well!
