BMW 3 Series Starter Replacement

BMW 3 Series Starter Replacement

This video is for replacing a starter motor from 2006 to 2010 BMW 3 Series. Non-Turbo Models.
I will show you how to quickly diagnose the starter and battery. The video only shows you how to test and replace the starter. Be sure to disconnect the negative battery cable before starter removal.
This is a 2008 328i that I am working on.

Starter Bolt Revision TIS says 20 Nm +180° for the longer M10x85 bolt and 20 Nm +90° for the shorter M10x30 bolt

Guapo says:

The back bolt is killing me

John Galv says:

Good video! thanks for showing the connectors in detail, they can be very difficult to remove.

Jason_Reacts says:

The PVC hose can also be unplugged from the back of the valve cover and you can pull it al out without uncliping the two from the bottom of the intake.

I own a 325i. I will never buy a BMW again, so much junks under the hood. lol

carlo vincetti says:

Whatever you do "dont" use the second method he shows here because it is completely a waste of time. Plenty of access is available, just pulling the intake back.

Al Ryan says:

Wow wish I saw this earlier. Paid $240 for the part and $480 in labor. That’s 4 hour labor charge Btw.

Divinehood says:

at 6 min into the video you test that white wire to find out itws the starter. what if that light doesnt come on or there is no power running to that wire with multimeter once you turn the ignition on? does it have something to do with cas system?

Jim Bean says:

Anyone else hearing a helecopter while watching this video or is it just me?

Skizzums says:

What year is this 325? I'm looking at buying a manual 2006 325i from my boss for cheap, said it just needs a starter and it's taking up space. Same procedure for the 2006?

Gabe S. says:

Whats the white wire called i replaced the starter and it worked for a bit then it still will click and not start now.

michael ngo says:

beautiful video

Fernando Baptista says:

Esse Sr. nunca trocou o motor de arranque de um BMW, mais um bocadinho desmontava o motor todo. LOL

Michael Jones says:

Honestly your videos is very very very informative and dummy proof. Thank you so much…

Finally a youtube video that gives proper advice on tools to use for this job! The only recommendation I have is to get the craftsman swivel ratchet with the bent handle like the snap-on ratchet he shows first, model # 44835. Never use an 11mm on an E14 or 10mm on E12, especially in such a tight situation. Stripping this bolt will guarantee a VERY BAD day.

Mr G says:

Craftsman 7/16 ratchet wrench works perfect because it has a star ratchet

Shannon Gabriel says:

Thank you for this amazing step by step video. I did my starter by myself from watching this! I wouldn’t have been able to do it without it. So thank you!!

pepito pepito says:

such a detailed explanation. you sir Is a god send for bmw owners who likes to DIY and save a ton. I haven't check your channel yet but have you done one for valve cover gasket yet?

Paul House says:

Great video. I struggled with a few things. My bolts for the starter were E16 not E14, it took me a bit too long to figure this out… frustrating. That said, the replacement stretch bolts from ECS were E14. Also, I couldn’t get the front (shorter) bolt off by just moving the intake out of the way, the intake had to be completely removed to get enough room to finally break it free, it was too tight! Also, the wiring harness screws underneath are at an angle and hard to see, I needed a size reference for the Torx (It ended up being T27, for mine), I had to peer at the rear one underneath the throttle body with an LED light placed just right. I’m not sure how or if I will get the rear screw back in. All the connectors were much more difficult than shown in the video to remove. Large hose pliers work pretty well for all of the pinch-to-remove hoses. Lots of blood from sharp plastic, metal crap, bruises and cussing. It usually takes me an hour or two to change a starter. I may finish this weekend, well we’ll see.

Jennifer Lee says:

great video! my daughter and I were able to successfully change out the starter in her car. Thank you!

drjoeset says:

WOW VERY DETAIL VIDEO, MY HAT OFF TO YOU SIR

Ed Filio says:

Just changed mine out…thank you for the awesome instructions…you made it simple….ALOHA from Hawaii!!!

Robert Mitchell says:

What are those two tubes connected to the intake

Andre Coleman says:

How long did the job take

Stephan Pettyjohn says:

I have a 2002 540i I'm not to mechanically inclined but I know a little but my engine won't crank or start. It runs if I push it into gear after getting some speed. I bought a new battery and everything works ac/heat, radio, and lights but my battery goes dead so I'm assuming its the alternator. but like I said it docent crack or make any clicking. I dont want to get into the starter if I dont have to what would someone suggestion be?

Steve Lach says:

Great video, putting mine back together today, how did you connect the lower CCV hose that runs to the oil pan? Did you connect it from underneath, by removing the metal cover? Or from up top, I cannot get it connected, maybe I am not positioning the intake just right, or there is a method I have not seen?

Thomas says:

why do you have to remove the intake manifold??? i did it without taking it off
