so you pulled the motor out to do this right…my god audi fucked up on
this one. i was going to buy an B6 S4 with 78k on it but knowing i would
have to do this …

Joseph Rooney says:

Hi Hazziar thanks for this very helpful post – you say below once u had the
new parts in you “did the adjuster setting and tensioner setting according
to bentley manual” I dont have this manual and could you enlighten me on
what u mean by the adjuster setting? I have my intake camshaft physically
out of time on bank 2 causing bank 2 misfiring and cam/correlation out of
sync code – -i can see the intake cam on bank 2 is of time and I cannot get
the steel plate in to time it so i know its of and I can on all the other 3
cam perfectly , I stripped mine today and can see big play on the cam
adjuster of bank 2 when I put a wrench on the cam and turn it back and
forth, I am wondering after I fit my adjuster is there a timing set up i
need to do with it? I would be grateful of your help? Joe In Ireland

FurtznFuriouz says:

Wow impressive job !

btw what intake is this ?

thanks

Hazziar says:

@chardgha Thanks, the car was extremely down on power, code p0021 was
pulled, and constant adjuster clicking for 1-2min on cold start were the
symptoms. I did a simple diagnosis by unplugging bank2 adjuster control
valve to see if the symptoms get worse or stay the same…it stayed the
same and to work I went.

drunkennewfiemidget says:

@vanda028 You’re thinking of the chain chain tensioner failure. This is the
cam adjuster. To replace the chain tensioners, the motor must come out, To
replace the cam adjuster, you can do as this video shows.

nieminen69 says:

Hi, thanks for your answer. This time I was lucky, I had just a loose
connector in camshaft adjuster. I just pluged it in and all good to go
again.

chardgha says:

nice video, how did you diagnose that part was faulty?

TheHighroller88 . says:

vary vary nice work i will follow shortly .

TypeTuber says:

Nice to see this video, thanks for taking the time. Someday I’ll need to do
this to my B7. Also, what was the mileage at which this was performed?

Hazziar says:

@asimoVT I locked the cams with 1/8″ angle iron [sheet metal strips] in the
cam notches with engine at TDC. No timing adjustment needed afterwards.

Phong Tran says:

Hey, I am getting ready to do this on my B6 S4, this may be much to ask,
but is there a DIY you can put together? Also, why did you end up changing
the cam adjusters? The car is currently throwing a bank 1 over advance and
cylinder 3 and 4 are misfiring.. please let me know!

blasterworm49300 says:

thank you for your response, I was sure it was the same problem as you, but
I wanted an opinion from someone who has already had the same problem. For
the screw 3242, I wanted to be sure not to damage the camshaft with T40046
tool in place. I have already removed all I’m going to change the parts now
thank you

blasterworm49300 says:

HOW TO SET UP THE SCREW 3242, WHEN THE ENGINE IS IN THE CAR? IS IT
POSSIBLE? I HAVE THE DEFAULT 16395 (P0011) YOU THINK THIS IS WHAT? THANK YOU

Marek Madisoo says:

ok thats good, but what can be problem, when i start car then Hydraulic
pushers makes sound for 3 sec like they dont have oil. I use fulsynt oil,
should i use for my 97 V6 2,4l semi synt?

Mrjrose01 says:

I really like the music, what is it? Thanks!

Hazziar says:

Sorry to hear that! If its not a sensor related problem then your timing is
physically off on bank 2 [drivers side]. Probably just a broke guide or
tensioner since you’re not getting cam adjuster codes. Do not use your old
engines guides/tensioners, Audi has had to revise those parts multiple
times because of problems. You can replace the timing parts on the heads
without removing the engine like I did.

Hazziar says:

I suggest swapping the ‘camshaft position sensors’ first [the part I
removed at 1:08]. If the code switches to the other bank then you simply
need a new sensor, if not, then you might want to consider the cars worth
to you. $5000 is an average figure for this repair, unfortunately.

cooltj5050 says:

Hello! Thanks for making this video! Did you need to lock both camshafts on
the passenger side and driver side to do this? And did you need to do
anything to the passenger side cam? I found a manual and it says I must
loosen the passenger side cam adjuster and retighten when tightening the
driver side cam adjusters. That didn’t sound right to me. Also did you have
to turn the crankshaft counter clockwise to engage the guide tensioner or
anything like that? Again manual insisted I do so? Thanks!

Mike Bell says:

Hi Hazziar. I have an 05 a6 4.2 code p1347. It’s low on power and rough
idle under 2000 rpms. I believe it’s timing tensioner. I heard dealer
wanted $5000 to repair. What is your suggestion?

Hazziar says:

@markit8dude1 No I’m on the northeast. That filter setup came with the car,
its Stratmopheres Hyperflow intake with a larger K&N filter and precharger
cover. I clean it every other oil change. I should note I deleted the pass.
aux. radiator and use the scoop as a crude ‘ram air’ setup.

vanda028 says:

nice i was told this was an engine out type of job. great to know

Marek Madisoo says:

V6 but it is same thing, ok i will check

Hazziar says:

It took me 13 hours with engine in chassis. If you only need to replace the
timing parts on the heads then you can do the repair in-chassis. Failing
guides and tensioners will cause misfiring too and judging by your codes
and start up hesitation I bet your timing is ~1/2 tooth off [which the
adjusters are probably trying to heavily compensate for once engine is
running].

Hazziar says:

No problem! I did lock the camshafts on both heads, locking the passenger
side cams kept the crank locked at TDC. I did not loosen the passenger side
cams as it would have thrown the timing off. Once the new parts were in I
did the adjuster setting, tensioner setting, and timing checks per Bentley
manual.

Hazziar says:

@jhmotard The cover is machine fit so I used ‘Ultra Grey’ high temp/torque
silicone. The gasket in the middle of the cover is 079131120A – bank 2 /
079131120 – bank 1 [#’s may supersede]. If you can, do both sides…bank 1
is more forgiving, slightly more work space…you take what you can get.

Hazziar says:

You can reuse your old chains though.

Jason B says:

Would you happen to be near Denver? Also what is that canister filter in
one of the shots? whats the maintenance/change schedule on it?

Marek Madisoo says:

hi , have code p1522 bank2, camshaft adjustment, malfunction static. what i
shoult to about it, it was only code what i got from diagnostics, no other
errors.

1jiveturkey1 says:

Major props to you, sir.

Hazziar says:

Try the camshaft sensor first since its cheap, you can even swap the
sensors from bank to bank and see if the problem transfers to the opposite
bank before buying a new sensor. Worst case is of course that your adjuster
and/or control housing solenoid is starting to fail.

TypeTuber says:

Nice to see this video, thanks for taking the time. Someday I’ll need to do
this to my B7

asimoVT says:

hi.. i have a question.. when u remove the adjuster.. and try to replace
it, isnt there then a problem to adjust the timing of the camshaft? how u
done it?

Hazziar says:

I’m guessing you have timing belt V8. Sounds like the bank2 camshaft
adjuster is bad. Sometimes the connector plug unseats or the wiring gets
damaged, so check that too before you consider replacing the adjuster.

Terry Tse says:

Mine is B7 S4. Just put on an used Engine coz the short broke by piston.
Unlucky after 1000km on road. P0300, p0301,2,3,4 occurred. After changing
all coil packs, sparkplugs. Misfire gone but now the engine shakes with
P1347,17755. Not the sensor problem, if thats really about the por chain
tensioner, can I used the old chains and tensioners and rails in my old
engine? is that the engine really need o pull out? Thanks very much!!

Hazziar says:

@TypeTuber At 125k, I purchased the S with this problem. I’m at 139k now.
Next time you have your VC’s off check your adjusters part #’s, if they are
079109087N, you have the latest revisions and probably don’t need to worry.
I hope this vid gave a general idea of what the process is like.

jhmotard says:

I’m in the process of doing this. Can you give me the part number for the
timing cover seal at 2:23 please, thanks

nieminen69 says:

I’m getting code 17927/P1519/005401 – Camshaft Adjustment Bank 1:
Malfunction in my Audi S6 4.2 V8 (AQJ-engine). Do you think I should still
go first with this camshaft sensor (hall-sensor)? Error has no visible
effect to engine, no check you engine -light either. Error just keeps
coming back after reseting.

Hazziar says:

I bought my S4 with a bad adjuster. If youre getting misfires with a cam
code I would park it until you get it fixed, thats dangerous once it starts
misfiring in relation to an over advanced cam. And sorry but I don’t think
I could write a DIY on this thats guaranteed to be fool-proof.

djeu4ix says:

How many hours would you say this took you? I’m throwing codes for p0340
and p0345, and nothing else. It rhythmically ticks when running, and now it
sometimes hesitates to start. I’m not sure if it’s guides, tensioners, or
adjusters, but if it can be done in-car, I may just buy guides and
tensioners and go for it/hand it to the local indy. If it is the adjusters
that are gone I would assume it would be misfiring. Bank 2 adjuster was
replaced less than 2 years ago by Audi

Hazziar says:

P0011 is the bank1 cam adjuster or tensioner. Basically the same problem I
had but on bank2. You can’t lock the crank cause the subframe is in the
way, locking the camshafts using 1/8″ steel strips will keep the crank from
rotating.
