Really good video, I think you’re the only person out of every video I’ve
watched that did proper wiring
More people need to watch your video and do it right, good work!

Dominic Barile says:

Im not great with electrical.. but Couldn’t you have just tapped into the
power wire from the reverse light and just connected that wire that you
soldered on right to your new reverse lights with an inline fuse? or would
that not work?

Anthony Nelson says:

Nice video. Just wanted to say that the waterproof connectors that came
with the lights you put the rubber grommet in the wrong place. It is
suppose to go onto the wire before the metal piece gets crimped on. That
way where the wires go into the connector is waterproof. The green rubber
piece on the outside of the plastic connector makes the connection
waterproof. With the way you have it. It is not a waterproof connection.

Nick Reid says:

Nice detailed video man.

I did a similar set up today minus the relay. I see a lot of people asking
about just using the factory wiring and I understand why you used a relay.

In my case I used 2 Cree LED lights that only draw about 1.4amps ea.
Looking at my wiring diagram my reverse lights run off of a 15 amp fuse.
Knowing only the reverse lights use this fuse I don’t see an additional 3
amps at most causing any harm, and is much less work to install.

I don’t drive in reverse for hours at a time so the lights aren’t on for
long periods of time. Being as I just did this I am going to keep an eye on
things and if I suspect any problems, what would be an issue with just
removing the factory bulbs and running only the LED?

Again it seems much simpler than the hassle of a relay…the LED lights
over light the factory light output anyways, and for those that have
“reverse light laws” this would cure their problem and would only have 2
lights on….

What are your thoughts???

TheSteveman2000 says:

Hey what kind of relay did you get? I’m hoping to do this to my Tahoe but I
need to find the right lights, for the right price haha. I also need to
find the right relay to make sure I don’t kill something important the
minute I give it juice.

Great visual at 1:47

James Coley says:

Awesome instructional video! I love the detail you provide as well as the
great video quality; the effort you put into your work really shows. I
have a need for such a solution on my Ford Taurus. I run a personal
service business and often make multiple nighttime deliveries where backing
up is often challenging. Any ideas on a similar solution. Also, I’ve been
thinking about a spotlight to help illuminate hard-to-see street signs and
house numbers, something like you see on a police car. Any thoughts there?

Smashing tutorial :-))

Yep transposing the two relay contacts dont matter, unless you have the n.c
and n.o contact version, but you know all of that 🙂
Loved the relay diagram :-), And now the bad joke: “it was relay good”
lol, sorry 🙁
The relay only consumes roughly 50-100ma from the reversing lights, next to
nothing.

Hey Chris, while I cant quite swing these bad boys I have been looking at
some led ones at walmart or these at ebay which I like the shot of them
working seem pretty bright….question is this relay stuff will I or should
have one for these to?

So, what you are telling me is the next time I see a guy I’m really good
friends with that just put a nice set of back up lights on his truck I
should crawl up under his truck in the parking lot and run a wire from the
relay to the horn…he will shat himself when he’s sipping that cup of
coffee and goes to back out of the parking spot…

RedTeamWolf says:

How to wire bed lights? When will we see that? I know how to do it but your
videos are awesome

ScottysDetailing says:

Great video!! I’m doing the same I should make a video too.

Woodenarrows says:

Very thorough details and a good clean, quality installation. Good to see
you used the wire loom, especially for that front to back power run. A lot
of people would have just run the wire itself but the loom gives that power
wire good abrasion protection. Last thing you want is a power wire rubbing
against the truck’s frame 🙂 Nice job…

Corey Toolen says:

You did very well explaining the wiring setup. I’m considering putting
some kind of extra reverse lights on my car because it’s so dark at night
where I live ( I’ve ran into the telephone pole at the end of my driveway
twice.) I’m going too use this in the future when I get everything planned
out. Thank you for the video! :)

Brian Pober says:

Awesome video man. You make it look so easy. By far the best video I’ve
seen on how to do this. Question though. How do i incorporate a 3 position
rocker switch? I want to be able to turn the lights on in my cab without
having to go into reverse.

Whaler Guy says:

We have to check our state laws before wiring the relay to the stock
reverse lights. I have my extra lights mounted on the roof, because I need
them to cast light on my boat at the ramp. The SC laws don’t allow more
than 2 reverse lights, so mine are on a fused cigarette lighter plug, not
hot-wired to automatically turn on at the same time as the stock reverse
lights. To be legal, if asked, I would need to say the extra lights are
used for “camping”. Here is the silly state law…”South Carolina Title 56
– Motor Vehicles Article 35. CHAPTER 5.SECTION 56-5-4750. Side cowl,
running board and back-up lamps. Any motor vehicle may be equipped with not
more than two back-up lamps either separately or in combination with other
lamps, but any such back-up lamp shall not be lighted when the motor
vehicle is in forward motion.”

dwrecck says:

Hey Chris

Would it be also possible to just splice the reverse tail light wire with
the aux tail lights and just run a bigger fuse in the fuse box ?

Harry D says:

He’s a clever guy, where did he learn all this?

dnl machine says:

Nice work! Bend up a bit of 2″ light steel plate or medium-heavy sheet
and make a set of guards for those – bet they are not cheap. I made some
for my trailer….an angled “C” along the bumper/crossways line, then
another 1/2 of that angled “C” running front-back. Really helps keeping
them from getting torn off in snow and bush.

Jeffs Yard Care says:

Excellent video and completed the correct way! Thanks

cwvowel says:

Hey Chris or whoever may be reading the comments that knows the answer,
what’s the point of the relay? I’m probably wrong, but wouldn’t the reverse
lights work simply by connecting them directly to the stock reverse light
wires? Sure it would draw more amps and require a larger fuse (right?), but
it would still work. Am I missing something?

epidemia2007 says:

What if you cover the wires in the relay with a plastic bag or something
like that.

Peter Chan says:

Hi Sir,

If you are interested to do a video for installing an android 4.2 car
stereo to help people know how to install the car stereo, I can supply a
free head unit.

matrixownz says:

you did a great job but I don’t think that will pass inspection if u have
that In your state and I would have put it on a toggle switch your going to
piss a lot of people of backing out off wally world lol

Gerry Jamieson says:

Probably THE BEST how to video I’ve ever seen. Your step by step with
pictures, wiring diagram and explanation was amazing and so helpful. You’ve
definitely made my favorite list. Awesome. Thanks

Billahori1 says:

Damn! Just chilling here watching videos. Had no intentions of doing
anything this weekend. But after watching this, I now have a new project.
Great video Chris. Thx.

larry ofw says:

thanks for this amazing video i learned alot of things…

Morten Ramsing says:

Retard question; can’t you just put brighter led bulbs in the reserve
lights?

Lucksh Y says:

I like how you used the Red Scribble to show how the line run from front to
back. Excellent video and clean installation. Guess you make the best
vehicle DIY videos.

Toby Tyler says:

thanks for the efforts of making this video for us, it was very easy to
follow from the beginning to end. Now, I might just install these myself as
well. Thanks Chris.

ThePmPowner says:

Nice video, but the soldering is bothering me, when soldering you want to
heat up under the wire, and add solder on the top. That way the heat will
draw the solder trough the wire and give a much better connection.

Neal Davis says:

Really well made video. Thanks for taking the time to show all of the
details.

Mick's Page says:

That was a top notch video covering the what’s and whys of setting this up.
Thanks!

Put folding off-road high intensity “loading” lights on your cab corners
for tailgaters. JK. Not really.

prandomable says:

do you have a video showing how to install xenox headlight or HID headlight
kit?

Tony Esparza says:

Nice! I like that wire stripper you were using. Where did you get it at?

idahomountainelk says:

Nice, I’ve always wanted to do this. I think I would prefer it be to a
switch though
