These HID retrofit kit is inexpensive but it is illegal (not approvedDOT) for one simple reason. They blind oncoming drivers.
REal factory HID are expensive not simply because the manufacturers are making money on you but they come through PROJECTION lenses which put the light on the right place AND NOT blinding oncoming traffic. IT IS A VERY SELFISH ACTION TO INSTALL THESE KIND OF KIT just for your sake. Factory halogen lights on your car are fine.

Nicholas Darsan says:

how did you turn on the fog lights from inside of the mdx
because I have on and I don’t know if I don’t know to turn them on or if they are blown?

Don Juan says:

I don’t have an Acura, but have been having my eye on HID’s. Main concern for me is heat from the ballasts and heat from the bulbs. As well as blinding other drivers. I know very little about HID’s, so forgive me. But are any of those an issue for any of you? I have PIAA’s in my headlights, but was thinking HID for fogs. Maybe around 4300k. Any heat or blinding issues?

Great video, pretty straight forward.

Thanks for the video!! I installed HIDs in my mom’s car. They look great.

I have an 02 TL with a blown fog light …does my fog light come off the same way?

Thanks for your comment. Your comment will let others know that wiring will differ from vehicle to vehicle, and to watch out for it. I’m glad you figured that you needed to use all the wiring in your kit. For me, I tested my HID install to see if it worked before I determined I didn’t need all the wiring that came in my kit. I’m glad things worked out for you!! 😉

CrashJon2 says:

it was different installing mine i have the same thing slim balasts but it was an 8000k
and had to use all the wires. i used the method you have done in this video and didn’t so i used all the wire and it worked after.

Maroot Nanakul says:

Good question. I can tell you my 2002 MDX did NOT come with HIDs. So the retrofit was simple for me. I caution you with factory HIDs. Contact the HID retrofit supplier for answers. Common sense tells me as long as you can remove the whole factory HID components, the retrofit would work. EXCEPT the retrofit kits usually are wired for headlamp plug-to-plug replacement, The factory HID might have different plugs. Bummer that factory parts are EXPENSIVE.. I hope this helps some. Good luck!!

Thanks for the video. I have a 2003 Acura TL that comes with factory installed HID headlights. My headlight went out but when i replaced with a new one, it dosnt fix it. So I think the ballast might be damaged. Did you MDX originally have HID? My concern is if or not I need any of the add ons such as a Capacitor, or Canceller? Thanks

Thanks for your opinion.

I’m not an auto designer, I’m just a consumer who wanted to update my low beams with HID’s. The process was so simple, I went ahead and replaced my fogs too just to have more light and be different from other MDX’s.

I can’t speak to whether or not HID/LED’s combat fog better. However I have noticed the cheaper/less expensive models don’t have fog lights. In many vehicles, they are optional, or come in a upgrade package. Maybe that’s what you’re talking about?? Dunno.

counkev says:

But some new vehicles come with bi Xenon HIDs and don’t have standard halogen high beams. Also Mercedes and fords do a stupid thing by removing fog lights and just put a strip of LEDs instead. I don’t think those LEDs are going to be able to help combat the fog.

Maroot Nanakul says:

counkev has replied to your comment on Acura MDX HID Fog Lights (2002)

You still need high beams and fogs even after your HID retrofit ? I bought some Sylvania Silver Stars Ultra and I am kind of disappointed. But I wouldn’t think so with HIDs.

Maroot Nanakul says:

HID’s because of their nature, offer a brighter light than your standard quartz halogen bulbs when compared bulb for bulb. HID’s are not meant to replace high beams and fog lights. Newer vehicles that come standard with HID’s still have halogen high beams and fog lights. Otherwise new cars wouldn’t have high beams or fog lights, but they do.

People who retrofit with HID’s do it for a brighter light, “modernize/update” their vehicle or the ones that go blueish HID’s do it purely for aesthetics.

Maroot Nanakul says:

Thanks for your response.
Comment regarding stock fuses/wires may not withstand starting currents applies to all aftermarket HID kits, not just this installation. If it were a real problem, you wouldn’t see HID kits flourish, they would all disappear.
Regarding blinding others, the fog light beam is lowest to the ground. The low headlight beam is higher off the ground. Not a problem in my opinion.
Recommendation: Don’t stare at head/fog lights.

But you have a valid point. Its not for everyone.

Igor E Krakhmalnyy says:

1st – stock fuses and wires may not withstand starting currents of this HID kit.

2nd – HID source of light is very bright (much brighter than halogen bulbs). Remember! Your fog light can blind someone from an opposite lane. That’s why any HID bulb must be used with collecting lenses.

Thanks for your comment.

Maroot Nanakul says:

Sorry for the late reply, but I installed the 6000K HID’s on both low beams and fog lights.
I didn’t want to be too blueish in color. I prefer more of a bright whiteish-blue.
Hope that helps!

Awesome video!! This is going to save me some money!!

Rehan Sayeed says:

@touie98052 What k lights do u have for ur low beam are those 6000k or 8000k??

Maroot Nanakul says:

Thanks for your comment.
The kit contains 2 ballasts. One for each light.
The kit will allow you to change both passenger and driver side fog lights.
The same kit will also work on your headlight.
That’s because the 2002 MDX uses the same bulb for the low beams and fog lights.
I bought my Kensun HID kit from Amazon.com. Here is the specific name:
KENSUN HID Xenon Conversion Kit 9006 (HB4) 6000K Slim Digital Ballast (Diamond White)
The cost was $92.49

mosthatedones says:

So is that total of 4 ballasts or 2? Or does it depend on the actual kit u buy? Which kits did u buy? I have the same car and year just all black I like your two tone though very nice…please and thanks u

Giancarlo Sanyer says:

Awesome video, thanks!

Maroot Nanakul says:

Sorry Chris, I’m not familiar with the 04 MDX.
But my guess is that Acura probably kept the design very similar,
that is, probably one bolt holds the fog light housing in.
My best advice is, consult your 04 MDX Owners Manual.

Chris Nguyen says:

I was looking at my 04 MDX and the holes to access the fog lights were a little smaller than yours. I had a 1/4″ extender bar with a 10mm socket and it would not fit into the hole. Do you know why or do you have any other suggestions?

Maroot Nanakul says:

Thanks.
Upgrading your vehicles headlight to HID’s is basically very simple.
On a scale of 1-10 (1 Easy – 10 Difficult) its probably rates a 2 .
The HID ballast just goes between the headlight bulb and the vehicles headlight harness.
The trick is ACCESS to your bulb which varies from model to model.
On some vehicle, bulb access is easy, so HID upgrade is easy.
But if the manufacture of your vehicle makes it tough then the job can be relatively difficult.

Michael Nanakul says:

Nice video! It makes me want to do a similar conversion to my vehicle. Keep up the great work.
